The 60s Surf Band, the Ventures, Still Big in Japan!

(At top, me holding the poster for the “Ventures Final Show in Japan.” I did drink with Don Wilson – the guy who is second from right – the one that looks like Rock N Roll Santa Claus. How could I forget that face? Nice guy.)
——————————–

This is a short post about some guys who really inspire me. You know them as “The Ventures.” They were huge in the sixties all over the western world.

They are still big in Japan…

Here’s what Wikipedia says about the Ventures: “The Ventures are an American instrumental rock band formed in 1958 in Tacoma, Washington. Founded by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, the group in its various incarnations has had an enduring impact on the development of music worldwide. With over 100 million records sold, the group is the best-selling instrumental band of all time. In 2008, the Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their instrumental virtuosity, experimentation with guitar effects, and unique sound laid the groundwork for innumerable groups, earning them the moniker “The Band that Launched a Thousand Bands”.

While their popularity in the United States waned in the 1970s, the group remains revered in Japan, where they tour regularly to this day.

It’s true. The Ventures are still big in Japan.

May I brag? I have drank with Don Wilson at a rip-off bar in Roppongi before…  I think that must have been in about 1988 or 1989. I have a photo around here someplace… If I can find it, I’ll put it into this blogpost. Don was a nice guy and the boss of the bar was kissing his ass the entire time I was there and Don put me on the guest list for the show… (So, how could I forget, no matter how drunk I was? And I mean, how many people look like Burl Ives or a a Surfer Santa Claus?)

And don’t really remember too much from that night excepting that Don was a nice guy, soft spoken, and I drank too much.

We drank Dom Perignon and it was outrageously expensive (I remember that). And I didn’t have to pay anything, they paid. I was blown away that they would pay for some shitty DJ in Japan’s drinks….

I vaguely remember the bar’s name, and I have been by there in the last few years but it is now gone.

Good riddance.

I think it was like ¥90,000 (almost a thousand US dollars) for a few bottles of Dom Perignon and some snacks. What a rip off! Thank God my girlfriend and I didn’t have to pay!

Anyway, like it says, the Ventures are still big (sort of) in Japan to this day. So big that they are actually having a “Final Show.” Well, what the hell? I guess so, I thought all the original members were dead?

Anyway, a Final Live, they have!

It’s kind of like my Punk Band when I was a youngster: every show we played was our “Final Show” (or “Last Final” or “Totally Final” or “Really, We’re Not Joking This Time, Final” or “Seriously, the Final Final.”)

But this just goes to show that if you have a brand and a name and an image, you gotta stick with it and live the dream.

The Ventures are playing Japan (again!) and the tickets are ¥6000 each! Holy Shit! That’s $50 (USD) a pop! And the venue they are playing at The Mozart Hall at Katsushika Symphony Hills Mozart Hall and that place holds about 1300 people! You do the math: $50 x 1300 = $65,000 to go to Japan and play one night? Why not?

And that’s not to mention what they get selling merchandise and a bunch of money from sponsors.

Is that cool or what?

So, well, the point is that:

1) Ventures are still big in Japan.

2) The Ventures can still come here and get paid to play and have fun.

3) They must all be in their late 60s or early 70s yet they can still tour the world and be treated like Rock Gods in Japan.

4) They probably still get to go out drinking in Japan and spend $1000 a night yet some rich Japanese person picks up the tab.

Scoff all you want… But you won’t find me disrespecting these people.

They rock! They have lived the true “Rock and Roll Dream.”

I wish I can do the same when I’m 70 years old! Don’t you?

NOTE: Holy Shit! I just found out that Don Wilson was born in Feb. 1933! That makes him 82 years old as of the writing of this article! Wow! What a wonderful life! And he is on his final tour of Japan! You rock Don!!!! You are a hero!

5 Tips on Why Why Nobody Watches Your Videos on YouTube (or Anywhere Else)

So you’ve made a video for your business or service or company, but nobody watches it? That happens a lot. There’s absolutely no point in making a video if people aren’t going to watch it.

And just making a video and putting it up on YouTube or wherever and not promoting is the best way to make sure no one sees your video.

So, why doesn’t anyone watch your video?

The other day, I was directed to a video by a friend for a new health product. It seemed that my friend wanted a similar video. When I saw that the video had been online for one month, yet it had been viewed on sixty times, I asked my friend why he wanted a video like that?

Of course, not getting a lot of views (or vice a versa) take a lot of factors, but here are the most important reasons your videos do not get lots of views:

1) Nobody Watches Your Videos because they are crappy and of low quality sound or image. I can help you there. Here is some free information:

Go to: Video Tips! Make Your Own Video For Your Business For Free! Pt. 1 (www.robot55.jp/blog/video-tips-make-your-own-video-for-your-business-for-free-pt-1/) Start at part one and go from there. There are 4 or 5 parts that will give you free advice from a professional on how to make your videos MUCH better! (More links below!)

2) Nobody Watches Your Videos because they are too long. Research data shows that the optimum video time for business videos on the internet is 30 seconds or under. 60 seconds is really pushing it. From: Business and Social Media Videos? Keep it 30 Seconds! 60 Seconds at Most!〜会社紹介動画は30秒か60秒がおすすめ robot55.jp/blog/business-and-social-media-videos-keep-it-30-seconds-60-seconds-at-most/

“According to research data by Visible Measures, the internet video audience measurement service: “20% of all your viewers will click away from a video in 10 seconds or fewer.”

That means, we must get the message out about what you or your business is about within the first 5 ~ 10 seconds.

The same data from Visible Measures shows that: “… by 30 seconds, you will lose about 1/3 of your viewers! 45% of all viewers will be gone by 1 minute…” Then it drops off a cliff. “You will lose 60% of your viewers by 2 minutes.”

So the most logical and cost-effective answer is to keep all your business videos at 60 seconds and under – with 30 seconds being the prime target.” (Need more data? Business and Social Media Videos? Keep it 30 Seconds! 60 Seconds at Most!〜会社紹介動画は30秒か60秒がおすすめ robot55.jp/blog/business-and-social-media-videos-keep-it-30-seconds-60-seconds-at-most/)

#3) Nobody Watches Your Videos because no one can find them because you gave your video a title or tags that are basically worthless

Duh! If people can’t find your video, then I suppose it’s pretty sure they can’t watch them. If your video has a poor description or title, then that’s the best way to make sure no one sees it. Having good tags and descriptions will also help people to find your video. Having a good description or tags also helps your video to pop up if someone is watching a video with similar tags.

#4) Nobody Watches Your Videos because no one can find them because you don’t have a blog or a Facebook or Twitter (or other Social Media) account that directs people to your video.

Putting a video on the internet is a great idea. But just uploading it to YouTube and that being the end of your efforts, is a complete waste of time. Making your video, editing and then placing it on YouTube is just the beginning; it is merely 1/2 of your effort. The next half of your effort must be in promotion. And that isn’t just one day of promotion, you’ll need to make a concerted effort for weeks, if not months.

Things don’t happen by magic.

Think about it, if they made a Star Wars movie but didn’t tell anyone about it… How many people would go see something they don’t know about, excepting by accident? Not promoting is a sure fire way to fail.

#5) Nobody Watches Your Videos because even your own staff are not involved with promoting the video and you don’t cooperate with the right people.

This is a very long subject, so I’ll keep it short. Take Facebook for example. Even if you put your video link on Facebook, you still need to build a buzz about it. Every single one of your friends and staff need to click “Like” on the video… You too. You need at least 9 “Likes” to have your post shown to more than a few % of your friends.

But not only that, your video cannot get a wider audience without more “engagement” from people. “Engagement” means, “People not just clicking ‘Like’ but also adding comments or sharing.” Get friends to agree to comment on your posts. You do the same for them. You also share each others posts whenever necessary. This will greatly increase your “engagement” and, in turn, Facebook will show your posts to more people.

Well that’s 5 Tips on Why Why Nobody Watches Your Videos on YouTube tips for today. I’ll have more in the next coming weeks, but this is an entire 1 week course in college on this subject..

See you next time.

Tokyo’s Best Cheap Sushi is in Okachimachi!? 東京の一番安くて美味しい寿司屋?御徒町にあるの?

This is going to sound like a paid advertisement, but it’s not. I think I have found the best, most delicious and cheap sushi in all of Tokyo and it’s called Heiroku Sushi in Okachimachi right next to Ueno.

おすすめ!すべてが美味しくって、新鮮です全皿 ¥140!

平緑寿司 御徒町店 〒110-0005 東京都台東区上野5−27−3 TEL: 03-3836-4395

Why do I think this is the best place in Tokyo? Well, everything is ¥140 a plate. What? “That’s not special!” you protest? True. It’s not. But the difference is that Heiroku Sushi is always packed (don’t bother going there between 12 ~ 1 pm or at dinner time after 5 pm until about 7:00 pm; there’s a huge line of people to get in.)

“But what’s that got to do with it?” you ask? Well, that means that since this place is always packed, they sell a ton of fish everyday so the fish is extremely delicious and fresh! Not to mention that Okachimachi is only a step and a skip away from the big Tokyo fish market at Tsukiji! This place has the best sushi for the price I have ever seen!

Don’t believe me! Here’s what my wife, who is Japanese said, “I love this place!”

There is one thing you should know, though. Heiroku Sushi is always so crowded that the sushi conveyor belt is going by really fast.

Top 3 Videos for Week of May 11, 2015 and the Watanabes from Tokyo!

Welcome back to Top 3 Videos. The Top New Artist Videos for the week of May 11, 2015. And do I ever have some hot videos for you guys and girls today!

First up today, or should I say, “First OFF! today”? Is a rock band from Los Angeles that’s been around since 2009. Wikipedia says,

“Off! was formed in Los Angeles, California in late 2009 by Circle Jerks/Black Flag singer Keith Morris, Burning Brides frontman Dimitri Coats, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes drummer Mario Rubalcaba.”

The Circle Jerks were a seminal punk band from the late 1970s Los Angeles punk boom. So you know these guys aren’t youngsters. My band, the Rotters, played with them a few times. The first time was at Brendan Mullen’s “The Masque.” I think it was the Germs and the Circle Jerks headlining. We were one of the very first opening bands – you know, the cool bands start at 7 pm – we were on at 5 pm or something – and the only people there at that time were the cleaning ladies and the guys sweeping the parking lot.

This video is hilarious. It is the birthday celebration for lead singer Keith Morris’ 59th birthday. For that birthday, he wants the band to go sky diving. Jack Black stars as a hardcore deranged skydiving coach who takes the guys up in the plane. The trip takes a horrifying, gory and very bloody turn when the LSD kicks in.

#3) OFF! – Over Our Heads – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVl3R3i9wkg

Next up is a new “Garage punk power pop Rockn’Roll” group named Titty Twister from Fukuoka in Kyushu, Japan. Titty Twister are: Howlin’ Kimiko on guitar and vocals, Dee Dee Kyoko on guitar, Maddaddy Shu on drums and Akichang on bass. Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Titty-Twister/187768281258674?fref=ts

#2) Titty Twister – Hibike https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sokacETuDNI

And, next up today is a “Punk/Rock/Stuff” band from Beaumont, Texas that we’ve featured before. Their name is Purple. They feaure;  Taylor Busby (guitar/vocals), Hanna Brewer (drums/vocals), Joe “Prankster” Cannariato (bass guitar). Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/purpletexasmusic

#1) Purple – Leche Loco – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCXRSSkQXaI

Finally, today’s freebie. Here’s a delightful band from Tokyo, Japan named the Watanabes but with a twist! This is what Wikipedia says:

“The Watanabes are a Tokyo based indie pop rock band with members from the UK and Japan. Their jangly alt pop sound has drawn comparisons to melody driven indie acts such as Belle and Sebastian, Teenage Fan Club, Crowded House and 1980’s Liverpool band The Pale Fountains, while their lyrics often touch upon their experiences in Japan… their soft acoustic melodies make an easier comparison to other British bands such as The Beatles or The Kooks… The band are fronted by British brothers Duncan and Selwyn Walsh on vocals and guitar.”

This Week’s Top 3 Videos & Su凸ko D凹koi (May 4, 2015)

It’s time once again for this week’s Top 3 Videos. The Top New Artist Videos for the week of May 4, 2015. From a few weeks ago, I’ve been asking artists to send in submissions and I have been getting a lot. Thanks. Remember that if you hit this Top 3 Videos list, you also automatically get aired on my extremely popular morning show in Japan. WTF? (What the Funday). So send ’em in. (Please “Like” our radio show FB page: https://www.facebook.com/WhattheFunday76.1?ref=hl)

I’ve been getting so many that I am thinking about making the Top 3 Videos twice a week; the weekday edition and then a new weekend edition, so keep sending in those Top 3 videos!

First up is Peter118. Peter118 is a guy from the UK named Peter Field. He used to be a bass player  in the punk rock band ‘senseless’ and has been in punk rock for 10 years.

#3) Peter118 – “Break ‘Em Out” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82iG5HDHfa0

It’s now the Golden Week holidays in Japan so the entire country has come to a grinding halt. Well, so will you when you watch this next video. It’s Freak Show time folks! This next band are a bunch of guys from Hawaii including their lead vocalist, a crazy mo-fo named Robbie Quine, and the band name is the Barbarellatones. It is rumored that Robbie won the Miss Hawaii championship only to be disqualified because he was a half. Half what? I’m not sure. I think he might be half space alien and half meatloaf. But don’t let me influence you, watch the video and decide for yourself. (Warning: This video might not be safe for work, watching in front of your mother, or anywhere near “normal people.” If there is ANY RISK AT ALL OF RAISED EYEBROWS DO NOT CLICK ON THE VIDEO BELOW! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!)

#2) The Barbarellatones, Get Your Freak On https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPeSddm0njs

Keeping up the Freak Show theme, next up is a wild new group called, Du Blonde. Here’s what their Facebook says:

Beth Jeans Houghton was born in Transylvania to a pack of albino wolves who raised her on chewing tobacco and stuffed clams. Despite they’re hospitality, love conquers all and she soon eloped to scotch corner with her shiny new stallion peter Andre. Beth was his mysterious girl for as long as she could be, but sadly he yearned for bigger baps. taking the wrong end of his tanned stick she searched up and down the Parisian market stalls for the biggest loaf’s she could find, but alas, when she returned home, he was gone. He is currently residing somewhere in the vicinity Jordan’s breasts. Beth was gutted……Until one day, she was on a family holiday with her albino wolves in Buttermere in the Lake District. (Read more here: https://www.facebook.com/DuBlondeOfficial/info?tab=page_info)

This band is hot!

#1) Du Blonde – Black Flag https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoZrQrgwtB4

Finally, it’s time for today’s freebie. I’ve written about this three girl band before. Their name is Su凸ko-D凹koi (Su Ko D Koi). I saw them at rehearsal a few months back and liked them so much, we decided to make their promotion video. Here is that video!

This is the second time they are on the Top 3 Videos countdown. Today, they appear again because they were written up in a magazine called, Tokyo Walker.

Su Ko D Koi in Tokyo Walker - Su Ko D Koi in Tokyo Walker

Su Ko D Koi in Tokyo Walker – Su Ko D Koi in Tokyo Walker

Tokyo Walker is, by far, the biggest and most influential “Places to go and things to do” magazine in all of Tokyo (Gee, that’s well over 35 million households too!). I guess the people who write for Tokyo Walker saw the video we made of the girls (as well as hearing them on the radio) and liked it so much, they included the girl’s in this week’s issue in the CD Review section. Waaaaay cool!

She sings,

“Ugly, ugly, ugly, ugly…. I know I am ugly….

But, I got a boyfriend and we have been going out.

But one day, out of the blue, he hit me for no reason.

I woke up in the hospital and he had his head in his hands.

Then he was gone….

But, I finally was able to realize that finally, he treated me like a woman!

I was happy!”

Once again, this song’s lyrics are sort of like that old Crystals song, “He Hit Me and it Felt Like a Kiss.”

These girls are HOT! And they are happening now!

Photo Dump of Cool Stuff Around Tokyo – And the Fattest Cat in Japan!

(Top image: This wonderful image of a man resides on the side of a dilapidated building in Sangenjyaya. As you can see, the wood the image is painted upon is falling apart. At least I was able to take one photo. This is marvelous! What a waste that it isn’t being preserved.)

—————————–

I walk around Tokyo all the time (Duh! I live here). I always carry my smart phone or a video camera. I take photos of interesting things I see.

It’s almost Japan’s Golden Week vacation so I thought I’d share my photo’s on my semi-annual “Photo Dump of Cool Stuff Around Tokyo!” If you are looking for photos of Tokyo Tower or Asakusa or the usual Tokyo fun spots, you won’t find them here. This is a photo dump from some of the back streets and alleys around town.

I’ve posted some photos here with my comments. Hope you enjoy them! I think these things are cool and they actually have another message for people who visit; just like the vending machines that are everywhere in Tokyo and yet no one breaks them or steals them…

E.T Motosumiyoshi

This is an E.T. that is standing outside a small restaurant in Motosumiyoshi on the Toyoko Line.

Japanese motorcycle

Is it a bike or a car? I don’t know but it’s cool and was parked right by the train station where I live.

bad girl

This girl was walking along in Setagaya-Ku and I saw her coat in the early morning. It says, “I can act to bad girl.” The longer explanation was even more convoluted.Tokyo Adult Goods Store

“Adult Convenience”? I guess it’s kind of like a 7-11 convenience store. I also guess that the only thing really in common with a convenience store is that this place, besides daily goods, also sells batteries.

fujimaru

This was at my favorite sushi place. I guess one of the young staff who aspires to be a manga artist drew this at work. Not bad, but pretty typical, I guess…. Look who’s talking! Much better than I could do!

moose head

Kevin Riley, Alpha Geek from Osaka, says, “The dude with the antlers is Sento-kun. He’s the symbol of Nara. (This is the renewal version with shinto priest’s gear.)

cat

The fattest cat in Japan. Maneki Neko is what they call these. They sit at the front of restaurants and establishments beckoning customers to come in and spend money. This is, by far, the fattest one I’ve ever seen. I guess that means he is REALLY lucky!

megane super

This guy was standing out in front of an eyeglass shop called, “Megane Drug.” I guess it’s like a drug store (like the previous convenience store – it has everything to do with eye glasses.)

butler

Finally, here’s a statue of a nice old butler that resides outside of a small coffee shop near Hanzomon station. This statue is standing there outside everyday, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in downtown Tokyo and no one vandalizes it or steals it. It’s been there for at least 15 years… Probably much longer. The first time I saw the nice old guy, was in 2000 when working close by. I remember because I went to that coffee shop that day.

He is still there and doing well!

It’s nice that he is too… It is just one more things that reminds that Tokyo is still the world’s safest city.

Continue Reading…

Top 3 Videos For April 27, 2015 〜ミュージックビデオも制作

Time once again for this week’s Top 3 New Artist Videos for the week of April 27, 2015. This week I want to show you my fave videos for the week. And, guess what? It’s ladies day at the Starlight Ballroom! So all three videos are from girl’s groups or bands with lead vocals.

But enough of my yappin’! Let’s rock!

Danny from the 50 Kaitenz sent me this first band and he recommends them highly. One listen and so do I! This is a new girls group from Kobe and all 4 of these girls are in their senior year at university! They are hot!

Next up is another new artist and her name is Colleen Green. She is considered is an American “indie pop” musician and she is from Los Angeles, California. She is currently signed to a cool label with a great name: Hardly Art records.

Next up is one of my favorite groups in the entire world! Their name is Taffy and they are great! I haven’t heard music that I like this much since the British Pop movement of the early nineties and bands like The Primitives and Transvision Vamp.

Check out what Drowned in Sound has to say about Taffy:

“Tokyo based four-piece taffy are something of a unique entity in being possibly the only Japanese band this past ten years to stir up any kind of interest in western territories. As sad a state of affairs as that may be, considering the wealth of talent that does exist in that part of the world, the main component of Taffy’s sound that sets them apart is their seemingly unparalleled love affair with British underground pop.” Read more: drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4144840-a-lot-of-japanese-bands-seem-to-be-obsessed-with-being-the-new-beatles-or-nirvana—dis-meets-taffy

Here they are with their latest song that is making heads turn.

Well, that’s it for today. See past weeks of Top 3 Video countdown below and see you back here next week!
