Top 3 Indies Videos 5/28/17! The Atomics, Fiona Silver, Plastic Girl in Closet (Japan), Blaire Alise & the Bombshells!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of May 28, 2017!

First off are three babes and a guy who were introduced to us by Kona Cindy, the curator to the stars. They are from Los Angeles and they are known as the Atomics. Get this; they are brothers and sisters – or so it would seem. They got a great write up in V Magazine. I’ve been playing this on WTF? (Every Sunday morning from 8 ~ 10 on InterFM 897) every week recently. This song is hot! Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TheAtomicsOfficial/

3) The Atomics – Voulez Vous https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzyuJnA7cPo

At #2 on today’s chart is an artist that debuted on our May 14th, 2017 chart: Blaire Alise & the Bombshells. They are a “60s Garage Pop,” and “Girl group inspired rock n’ roll with a sucker punch of garage rock!” This is hot. Look for lots from them in the coming weeks. This is the new sound of Detroit Garage Pop! They have a cool Facebook page too: https://www.facebook.com/blairebombshell/

2) Blaire Alise & the Bombshells – Telemono https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqpkSd6ci2E

And at this week’s #1 is yet another artist brought to us by Kona Cindy! Her name is Fiona Silver! Fiona hails from East Village in New York and is getting rave reviews! She was also nominated for GO! Magazine’s Nightlife Award for Best Performer! Wow! Need to know more? Today’s #1 tune is from her album, “Little Thunder.” Check her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/FionaSilver/?pnref=lhc

1) Fiona Silver – Take Me Down https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkN36WEHEG0

Spotlight Artist! Today’s spotlight goes to a trio from Iwate (That’s way up north by Hokkaido – Japan’s northernmost island) and they were introduced to us by my friend Satoshi Miyaki. The band’s name is Plastic Girl in Closet. Their music is a sort of Shoe-gazer type but they describe themselves as “J-pop, Indiepop, Guitarpop.” I think it is fab. Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/plasticgirlincloset/

Spotlight Artist! PLASTIC GIRL IN CLOSET – Pretty Little Bag  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAjUuEi7DQk

That’s all for today! See you next week when we return to the Top 3 Indies Artist Videos Countdown. See ya! – Mike in Tokyo Rogers

Top 3 Indies Videos 5/21/17! Moja (Japan), Baby Shakes, Sloan Peterson, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of May 21, 2017!

Once again, today’s line up is awesome (if I must say so myself!) First up is a new artist from Brisbane, Australia named Sloan Peterson. Her bio says, “Sloan Peterson; a love child of 50’s guitar pop and modern garage rock, bursting with a warmth that’s inseparable from her private identity. Influenced by everything from Elvis, to Latin legend Xavier Cugat or the fashion statements of Nancy Sinatra and Bowie – Sloan Peterson is the sum of these influences that adds up to so much more.
Her debut EP is in progress.” Today’s number is her debut single.

Of course she has a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/sloanpetersonmusic

#3) Sloan Peterson – 105 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbP2PUKDDj0

At #2 is Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas who hail from Detroit, Michigan. In 2014, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas released their debut “Secret Evil” and spent two years on the road; countless headline gigs, supports with such like-minded acts as Gogol Bordello, Social Distortion and St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and well-received sets at festivals like Lollapalooza, ACL Music Festival, Osheaga, and Bonnaroo. Long hailed as an explosive and theatrical live outfit, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas will celebrate the release of they new album, “Telephone // Telefono” (On Sale June 23, 2017) with a non-stop North American tour. They’ll debut in Japan on my nationally broadcast FM radio show, “WTF?” on InterFM897 tomorrow, Sunday, May 21, 2017.

Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/JessicaHernandezandTheDeltas

#2) Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas – Sorry I Stole Your Man  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-v76IVtV-Y

At #1 this week are no strangers to the countdown, New York’s own, The Baby Shakes! Their Bio says, “Baby Shakes are a rock n’ roll-punk band from New York City. Mary on lead vocals and guitar, Judy on lead guitar and vocals, Claudia on bass and vocals, and Ryan on drums. With catchy melodic vocals over dirty guitars and a killer rhythm section, their influences range from The Ramones and Slade to Chuck Berry and 60’s Motown girl groups.

I love this band! AND their newest album “Turn it Up” goes on sale today (May 19, 2017)!

#1) Baby Shakes – Do What You Want https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xF6Yl8RAqc

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Today’s feature are a kickass duo from Tokyo named Moja who are going to appear at the Chester Live 2017 festival in the UK this year! Wow! Moja’s bio says, “What’s Moja sound like??? It’s thundering, passionate, high-speed Dance Music of the kind you’ve which never experienced before. Everyone dances like mad at our shows. And we love to share that space and experience with the audience. We’ve performed in many places such as Tokyo, Toronto, Quebec, New York, London, Liverpool, Hong Kong, Italy, and more…” I’ve seen Moja live several times before. It is difficult to describe their live shows… I haven’t seen anything like it since Iggy Pop. This video captures the live atmosphere of the band about as best as I think possible – which is impossible. This video was given rave reviews by the drummer of the Libertines.

Here’s Moja’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MOJA-203061873063258/

Top 3 Indies Videos 5/14/17! Blaire Alise & the Bombshells, Lisa Mychols, Pats Pats (Japan), Single By Sunday

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of May 14, 2017! And do I have some hot music for you today! Really! There were so many great new tunes that I had a hard time picking the best, so today and next week’s countdown’s should be KILLER!

First up is a group from Detroit Michigan that was introduced to us by my friend Shuichi Masaki from the band Titty Twister in Kyushu! Thanks Masaki san! I LOVE THIS BAND! Their name is Blaire Alise & the Bombshells. I’m not sure but this could be my favorite new find of the year so far! They describe themselves as “60s Garage Pop,” and “Girl group inspired rock n’ roll with a sucker punch of garage rock!” This is hot. Look for lots from them in the coming weeks. This is the new sound of Detroit Garage Pop! I’m going to play them on the radio tomorrow (Sunday, May 14, 2017) on WTF? InterFM897. So check it out!

Blaire Alise & the Bombshells remind me of early Blondie (and I know what I am talking about because I was there at that time and I saw early Blondie!) They have a cool Facebook page too: https://www.facebook.com/blairebombshell/

#3) Blaire Alise & the Bombshells – I Got Something   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BygoQ8qL-zA

At this week’s #2 is an artist who has been on our countdown several times. The last time was just two weeks ago! Her name is Lisa Mychols. Lisa is HOT and she has gotten some awesome reviews:

“Bridging the gap between 1960’s girl groups and modern aggressive pop” -Dan Pavelich, Vandalay Records

“The Queen of power pop!” -Power Popaholic

I’ve liked Lisa Mychols for a long time, since Rodney on the Roq introduced me to her… Today’s track on the Top 3 is a world debut! Check it out! Here’s her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/lisa.mychols

#2) Lisa Mychols -Loving You Baby  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVw7JlTCqcg

At #1 is a Pop/Rock band from Glasgow, Scotland! Man! There are so many good bands from Scotland (and Kyushu, Japan) it must be a worldwide rock n roll explosion! They are 4 guys who go by the name of Single By Sunday.  It looks like these guys got together in June 2015 to form a band but they’ve been friends since childhood. They has a massive Social Media following that is quite impressive. Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SingleBySunday/

#1) Single By Sunday – Nevereverever   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ER95fsLcs4

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Today’s feature are a trio from Tokyo and they are one of my favorite groups. The Pats Pats! I think this is their 3rd time on the countdown. This is a video made by my friend Ken Nishikawa and myself (because we like this band so much!) This was shot at Shibuya O-Nest on April 6, 2017. Ken did all the editing while I slept on the sofa! The lyrics for this song are below the video. Here’s the Pats Pats Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/patspats/

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! THE PATS PATS 「A.A.A」 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7-4IWBiSSU

A.A.A. lyrics:

What’s your favorite thing in the world
You can have anything you want
Where’s your favorite place in the world
You can go anywhere you want

(Chorus)
Ti amo ti amo
I never met someone like you
Ti amo ti amo
I’m in love with you baby

A.A.A

I wish for nothing besides your love
I need you more than you need me
What are you doing tomorrow?
I want to know more about you

(Chorus)

Top 3 Indies Videos 5/07/17! Jungles (Japan), pinksideofthemoon, The Coathangers, Skating Polly!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of May 6, 2017!

First up is Skating Polly. This is their 3rd time (I think) on the countdown. Rodney on the Roq plays them a lot. I think they are often too loud for WTF? on InterFM 897 on Sunday mornings…. But maybe not this particular song! Skating Polly Skating Pollywas formed in Oklahoma in 2009. The band consists of multi-instrumentalists Kelli Mayo  and Peyton Bighorse, who were 9 and 14 years old when the band formed. They are a Riot Grrrrl Indie Pop band. Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SkatingPolly/

#3) Skating Polly – Louder In Outer Space  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLjDYd35p5k

At #2 is a pinksideofthemoon…. Legendary producer and engineer Lee Popa and songstress Jolee Popa make up pinksideofthemoon and they hail from Portland, Oregon. Their FB page describes their music as, “Driven by electronic beats and grooving loops pinksideofthemoon mixes live guitars, bass, keyboards and synthesizers and covers them with a smooth coating of silky female vocals with Dub style echo and effects to create the pinksideofthemoon.”

Besides all that, pinksideofthemoon have been getting regular airplay on my weekly radio show, WTF? What the Funday? (Every Sunday 8 am ~ 11 am on InterFM 897) And they will be guests on the show tomorrow, Sunday, May 7, 2017! Here’s their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/Pinksideofthemoon-110587222355798/

#2) pinksideofthemoon “Lost in Space” Remix by John Fryer “Don’t Let the Smile Fool You”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKtEKvIgHtw

At #1 is a song that just came out yesterday. It’s the Coathangers. These girls are one of my favorite bands over the last year or so and this is at least 5 times that they’ve been on the countdown. They call themselves a “Yes! Wave!” band and they hail from Atlanta, Georgia. Their biography states: “The story goes that four young women decided to start a band for the sole purpose of being able to hang out and play parties. They weren’t going to let the fact that none of them knew how to play any instruments get in the way of their having a good time.”

Ha! I think they are awesome! Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TheCoathangersATL/

#1) The Coathangers – Captain’s Dead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3bqo4tuTYM

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Is a band called “The Jungles.” They used to be called, Red Bacteria Vacuum. Or they still are? Who the hell knows? I heard they were now called, “The Jungles” but I can’t find much on a band with that name – duh! And there is no Facebook page for the Jungles (as far as I can see – If you know one, let me know!) But there is a page for Red Bacteria Vaccum! Anyway, the info is sketchy, but their bio says: “Red Bacteria Vacuum (レッドバクテリアバキューム) is an all-girl Japanese punk band from Osaka formed in 1998 consisting of Ikumi, Kassan, and Jasmine. The band relocated to Tokyo in 2000.”
