Old VHS Video Tapes Becoming Expensive Collector’s Items! Do You Have Any of These Tapes?

Good News and Bad News!

Good news first!

Remember those old VHS video tapes that everybody had back in the eighties?  Well, now some of those old VHS video tapes might be worth a bunch of money! That’s right! Some VHS tapes have now become valuable and collectable antiques selling for several thousand dollars!

What’s the Bad News?

The Bad News is that you or your mom or wife, or dumb boyfriend, dumped boxes of them into the garbage years ago… And you said, “OK!”

Arrrrrgggghhhhh!

Now, antique and collectable professionals and experts say that those VHS tapes are joining the ranks of vinyl records as valuable and rare collectibles and some of them have been getting sold for over ¥1,230,000! (That’s over $10,000 (USD)).

Arrrrrrgggghhhh! Again!

As the years went by and DVD’s became popular, VHS tapes have disappeared from the average household. Add to that the big retail chains going bankrupt and you have a massive amount of VHS tapes being dumped and ruined in land fills.

But VHS cassettes and boxes that are still in good shape can demand high prices. They have been gone and out of our existence for just long enough to inspire nostalgia.

David Jinks, a famous international collector of goods and antiques, said: ‘It’s time to learn the lesson of vinyl. Many old LPs and singles are now worth huge amounts of money.”

I once saw David Bowie’s “Man Who Sold the World” (The Orange Jacket) selling for over ¥4 million yen (That’s about $40,000 (USD)) at a store in Shinjuku! Today, some VHS video tapes are considered just as collectable as original records.

Even now, sometimes you can see piles of old VHS tapes being thrown out. There are probably few items more unwanted at the moment than old VHS video tapes. Many people probably have a boxful in the basement and they, of course, don’t have a working VHS machine (who does?)

Did you know that charity stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army and other second hand stores won’t even take the VHS tapes and machines for free? because nobody wants them!

But it is because they are being thrown out in the trash that they have become valuable.

Uh, you wouldn’t, by any chance have any old Betamax tapes or a Betamax player, would you?

They definitely will become expensive collectables in the future too… The question is, “Where we going to store all this stuff?”

The Kaiju: Early Japanese Monster Movie Trailers

Good Sunday morning! Time to talk “Kaiju.” Kaiju means “monster.” Japan’s cinema industry made a staple of these for decades.

Wikipedia explains:

Kaijū is a Japanese word that literally translates to “monster,” and is used to refer to a genre of tokusatsu entertainment. Kaiju films usually showcase monsters of any form, usually attacking a major Japanese city or engaging another (or multiple) monster(s) in battle. Related terms include kaijū eiga, a film featuring giant monsters or a single monster; kaijin (referring to roughly humanoid monsters); and daikaiju (giant kaiju), specifically meaning the larger variety of monsters. Godzilla is an example of a daikaiju; others include Gamera, Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla and Daimajin. The term ultra-kaiju is longhand for kaiju in the Ultra Series. Toho has produced a variety of Kaiju films over the years (many that featured Godzilla and Mothra) but other Japanese studios contributed to expanding the genre in Japan by producing Kaiju films and shows of their own.

Now you know the history, here’s a few of my early favorites.

First up, of course, the first Godzilla movie!

1954 – Godzilla – Ishirô Honda http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xpz2qz_1954-godzilla-ishiro-honda_shortfilms

Then the sequel to Godzilla from the following year, 1955. Everyone always says sequels aren’t that good. Here’s proof!

The success of these Godzilla movie led to a plethora of other monster movies. With the next billed as the “Ultimate Monster Movie” from 1968.

DESTROY ALL MONSTERS 1968 – GODZILLA Movie TRAILER www.dailymotion.com/video/x8oqwe_destroy-all-monsters-1968-godzilla_shortfilms

Finally, today’s throw-away film. This is the missing link between the 1933 King Kong film and the 1954 Godzillafilm. Sorry I don’t have a trailer for this. This is the only remaining bits from that film.

Ninja Slayer From Animation and Sexy Mina Shirakawa Hit it Big!

Well, folks, last night, the first episode of “Ninja Slayer From Animation” aired. Along with it, “The TV Show” had its debut.

ロボット・ゴー・ゴー, 格安, ビデオ制作, ビデオ編集,

ロボット・ゴー・ゴー, 格安, ビデオ制作, ビデオ編集,

I reckon I should give you a short report of the results. Well, according to the chief producer, the results were great. He said that more than 1/2 of the viewer remarks were negative and critical of the animation. That’s bad! No, that’s good, actually. Hundreds of thousands of comments were made and the worst thing that could happen is if people didn’t care enough to comment. You know what they say, “Love and Hate are two sides of the same coin.”

He also informed me that during the program, the topic that was #1 on the “Now trending” charts at Twitter was Ninja Slayer. It gets better! Not just #1, but Ninja Slayer From Animation related topics also were trending at #2, #3 and #4 at the same time! So, it’s kind of like the Beatles in the sixties when they had the Top 5 slots on the Billboard Pop Charts!

Ninja Slayer From Animation held the top 1 ~ 4 slots all at the same time! Wow!

Immediately after Ninja Slayer from Animation aired, the segment called, “The TV Show” aired. The TV Show is a short variety program that I created, wrote and produced along with Ken Nishikawa and Motoyoshi Tai.

“The TV Show” (ザ・TVショウ)features interviews with the musicians that make the theme music for Ninja Slayer from Animation. As far as “The TV Show” is concerned, the reaction was very good again! More than 50% of the comments were negative with many commentators saying they didn’t know who the artists were and they couldn’t figure out what “The TV Show” was all about.

I am very happy about that.

The TV Show is supposed to be a sort of “flow of consciousness.” We created it to intentionally make the viewer think, “What the heck is this?” The first time I watched Monty Python’s Flying Circus, in the mid 1970s, I thought, “What the heck is this?” I didn’t realize for the first 15 or 20 minutes that it was a comedy show. Duh! When I finally figured that out, I was hooked for life.

Here’s the trailer for the TV Show:

Unsurprisingly (at least to me) was the audience reaction to Mina Shirakawa, our co-host.  She’s “Japan’s Sexiest Japanese Girl!” (I just made that up! Pretty funny, eh? Get it? “Japan’s Sexiest Japanese Girl”?! Ha! Ha! Ha! She is too!) That’s her in the bikini at the top of this page. She hit it big time on last night’s show. The viewer reaction was massive and they just loved her voluptuous, er,… boobs…er, boos….Boots! Yeah! Boots! That’s it!

They loved her boots!

You can watch next week’s episode on April 23, 2015 at 11 pm Japan Time on Niconico Douga for free (check your local time!) Here is the link to watch it: http://live.nicovideo.jp/watch/lv212629769

Of course, you can check back here for more photos and videos of Mina Shirakawa in the coming weeks!

And thanks so much to all of you for watching our program. We appreciate it!

Japan’s Hottest New Girl’s Group New Video! Su Ko D Koi! Su凸ko D凹koi – New PVビデオ「ブス」です!

Gang! We just made the new video for Japan’s Hottest New Girl’s Group! Su Ko D Koi! These girl’s are fucking fantastic! Su凸ko D凹koi 「すっとこどっこい」. The song is called, “Busu” which means “Ugly.” Check it!

She sings、

“Ugly, ugly, ugly, ugly…. I know I am ugly….

But, I got a boyfriend and we have been going out.

But one day, out of the blue, he hit me for no reason.

I woke up in the hospital and he had his head in his hands.

Then he was gone….

But, I finally was able to realize that finally, he treated me like a woman!

I was happy!”

It’s kind of like the old 1950s song, “He Hit Me, and It Felt Like a Kiss” by the Crystals but with a 2015 twist!

Cool! Isn’t it?

This Week’s Top 3 New Artist Videos (04/07/15) 〜ミュージックビデオも制作

It’s time for this week’s Top 3 New Artist Videos for the week of April 7, 2015. This week I want to showcase what we think are some the best girl bands around and share their videos with you. Some of these videos are from last year, but this countdown is only a few weeks old, so I have some catching up to do. I play these artists and these songs on my regular weekly FM radio show, “What the Funday” on InterFM that is broadcast in Tokyo and Nagoya (and all over Japan on the Radiko.jp network. You can listen to that (if you are in Japan) here: http://radiko.jp/).

So let’s get to today’s Top 3.

The first music video is from a Berlin-based Girl Group called Half Girl. I can’t find much information on this group but they are great! I love this track. Half Girl are Julie Miess (Britta), Vera goiter (Luise Pop), Anna-Leena Lutz (The Laughter) and Gwendoline Tägert (Mondo Fumatore) are composed Half Girl. From what I can guess they are considered Berlin’s All Girl supergroup. You will dig this tune and crack up.

Half Girl – Lemmy, I’m A Feminist(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgJYF2m7bXk)

Next up is a great band from London, England and this is their second time on our charts.  They released their debut album “Out of View” on 28 January 2013, which went in at number 8 in the UK Indie Breakers Chart, and number 2 in the UK Record Store Chart.

The History of Apple Pie – Jamais Vu (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODnIAWzGz3s)

And finally, last but not least and at #1 is The Fabulous Miss Wendy! The Fabulous Miss Wendy is a rock/punk/grunge band formed in Los Angeles. I was told by the late Kim Fowley that the Fabulous Miss Wendy is the next big rock female superstar and he compared her to iconic female musicians like Joan Jett. According to “Revolver Magazine,” The Fabulous Miss Wendy is “the sexiest rock star ever”! She started playing at the age of ten and was  inspired by punk acts like the Misfits, The Dead Kennedys, and The Ramones. In High School, her classmates voted her “most likely to be a rock star”! Hee, hee, hee…. Is that cool or what?

Right now, it’s a Sunday evening and YIKES! I realized I haven’t written anything about video production or TV or famous people or anything! Pop Superstar Ricky Martin, the Boy-Band Menudo and Me – Another True Story

The other day, I posted that article about Jack White of the White Stripes. It got a fantastic reaction! Thanks so much. If you want to read that story (when you read it, you’ll also see that it is, indeed, a true story) then click here: The White Stripes Jack White and Me (A True Story) – (robot55.jp/blog/jack-white-and-me-a-true-story/)There’s also photo of me with Jack and Meg White of the White Stripes and that was well before they ever became famous.

Actually, folks, may I brag? I have tons of photos like that with me and the rich and famous. I went looking through a bunch of them and saw a few names that I’d like to drop: Yoko Ono, Paul Weller, Arnold Schwarneggar, former US President George Bush… But which story would impress you, dear reader the most today?

Well, the hint came from an alert reader and friend Jimbo who wrote: “Wow, Placebo, Linkin Park, and Elvis Costello are all very impressive, but I doubt many people can claim to have a photo with Menudo. That is a gem. :)”

So, today I am going to show you proof of me with Menudo and Ricky Martin when he was a 10-year-old boy.

No kidding.

First off, “Who is Menudo?” You ask? Here’s what Wikipedia says: “Menudo was a Puerto Rican boy band that was was one of the biggest Latin boy bands in history. The band achieved much success, especially during the 1980s, becoming the most popular Latin American teen musical group of the era. The band was a starting point for superstars like Ricky Martin and Draco Rosa, who were members around the mid 1980s during their youth.”

Actually, they were so popular they toured Japan in 1985. I was there.

Here’s the official release story for the mass media after I left Menudo:

Mike Rogers, was the sixth, most handsome and eldest member of Menudo. He wrote all the hit songs and played all the instruments. He also was director of choreography for all the stage shows. During Menudo’s Japan tour, things came to a head when the other five members complained that Mike was getting all the action with the hot and sexy Japanese babes (who were just dying to meet him) while the other Menudo members couldn’t run around with girls because they still hadn’t reached puberty and all had to be in bed by 8:00 pm.

During their Japan tour, Mike was having so much fun with sex-starved Japanese girls that he said “Goodbye” to Menudo and quit the group.

It was a mistake that Mike Rogers would always regret. If Mike had stayed, it would have been him, and not Ricky Martin would would be living in massive homes in the Caribbean, yachting on his yacht and flying around the world in his own private jet.

But he left, and the rest is, as they say history….

Mike would be quoted as saying later: “Sure, I regret it. But I just couldn’t live with myself having all that money and all those women trying to get into my pants all the time!… So I decided to take a $7.42 an hour job teaching English to Japanese businessmen.”

——–

Well, OK…. the above is a bit of a stretch… That’s not exactly how it happened. What really happened was I was a regular on a kid’s show named “Ohayo Studio” on TV Tokyo in the mid eighties and Menudo came on my show. After the show ended, I asked if I could take my photo with them so I could claim, years later, that I was the eldest member of the group…

See? I have always been a guy who planned ahead! (But the fake story is much more fun, isn’t it?)

Chuckle!

Have a great weekend!

初期のアニメ!Early Animations! Part 4

This week, I’d like to enjoy some very early animations with you and give you some interesting background too. These productions are excellent in their concept and design, I think. The very last one at the bottom even has a great script worthy of a full length motion picture, but done in animation! Of course, if that were done as a motion picture, it would cost millions of dollars!

First up today is one of the early animators, Germany’s Oskar Fischinger.

Fischinger animated anything and everything he could find in a series of short abstract art films during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1934 he created an animation called, “Composition in Blue” which is considered his signature work. Walt Disney was so impressed with his work that in late 1938, he hired him to create the “rolling hills” footage for the opening sequence of Fantasia to the music of Bach’s “Toccata & Fugue.” Fantasia was released on November 13, 1940. Wikipedia says: “As of 2012, Fantasia had grossed over $76.4 million in revenue and is the 22nd highest-grossing film of all time in the U.S. when adjusted for inflation. Fantasia, is ranked by the American Film Institute as the 58th greatest American film in their 100 Years… 100 Movies and the fifth greatest animated film in their Top 10 list.”

Here is Oskar Fischinger’s An Optical Poem (1938) – Classic Short Film (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=they7m6YePo)

After our last issue of “Bizarre Animations,” John in Melbourne wrote to me and asked what the difference was between “Stop Motion Animation” and “Still Motion.” They are different, but close. Wiki says that: “Still motion is a method of displaying many images one after another as frames, using the technique of “frame-by-frame”, similar to the concept of stop motion. The difference between this and stop motion, however, is that still motion is not a method of animation and therefore, each frame does not have to be related in any way.”

So Still Motion is using still photos and is often used in horror films. For example, a sequence of images appear on screen, flashing at a fast speed to intensify the moment (like a crime scene or a memory sequence). Of course, these flashing scenes typical to a Still Motion would be accompanied by scary music. Still Motion is also used to portray flashbacks, dreams, someone’s life flashing before their eyes, and the scenes will allow the viewer to understand a concept in a short period of time. It’s kind of like a slideshow.

Here is an example of a well made Still Motion that is interesting to watch.

Her Morning Elegance / Oren Lavie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_HXUhShhmY

Next up are two videos that I think are a real treat. They are by a British video production and animation company called, “Bolex Brothers.”

The Bolex Brothers is an independent British animation and production studio based in Bristol in England. The Bolex Brothers specialize in stop motion animation and have produced many short films and commercials, as well as one stop motion feature film, The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb (which is the last video at the bottom of the page!) The Bolex Brothers are named after the Bolex brand of 16mm cameras that were once popular with animators, and film makers in the 50s throughout the 80s before digital cameras became popular. The Bolex Brothers films are often bizarre and surrealistic. Their films often employ experimental and quite uncommon animation techniques such as pixilation (posing and shooting live actors frame-by-frame).

Here is the Bolex Brothers – The Saint Inspector https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPfGqfH0R98

And finally, for your enjoyment, like I promised, here is the Bolex Brothers production of the The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb. This is an excellent animation but it is almost 1 hour long. Watch when you have time.

Well that’s it for this week’s animations. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did.
