The second week, we featured the Grindcore artist known the world over as Melt Banana! This was another very special show as these guys rarely appear on TV.
Taro and Mina with Melt Banana
Melt Banana is some very hard core and radical stuff. Don’t believe me. Check it for yourself!

Welcome back to Top 3 Videos. The Top New Artist Videos for the week of May 11, 2015. And do I ever have some hot videos for you guys and girls today!
First up today, or should I say, “First OFF! today”? Is a rock band from Los Angeles that’s been around since 2009. Wikipedia says,
“Off! was formed in Los Angeles, California in late 2009 by Circle Jerks/Black Flag singer Keith Morris, Burning Brides frontman Dimitri Coats, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes drummer Mario Rubalcaba.”
The Circle Jerks were a seminal punk band from the late 1970s Los Angeles punk boom. So you know these guys aren’t youngsters. My band, the Rotters, played with them a few times. The first time was at Brendan Mullen’s “The Masque.” I think it was the Germs and the Circle Jerks headlining. We were one of the very first opening bands – you know, the cool bands start at 7 pm – we were on at 5 pm or something – and the only people there at that time were the cleaning ladies and the guys sweeping the parking lot.
This video is hilarious. It is the birthday celebration for lead singer Keith Morris’ 59th birthday. For that birthday, he wants the band to go sky diving. Jack Black stars as a hardcore deranged skydiving coach who takes the guys up in the plane. The trip takes a horrifying, gory and very bloody turn when the LSD kicks in.
Next up is a new “Garage punk power pop Rockn’Roll” group named Titty Twister from Fukuoka in Kyushu, Japan. Titty Twister are: Howlin’ Kimiko on guitar and vocals, Dee Dee Kyoko on guitar, Maddaddy Shu on drums and Akichang on bass. Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Titty-Twister/187768281258674?fref=ts
And, next up today is a “Punk/Rock/Stuff” band from Beaumont, Texas that we’ve featured before. Their name is Purple. They feaure; Taylor Busby (guitar/vocals), Hanna Brewer (drums/vocals), Joe “Prankster” Cannariato (bass guitar). Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/purpletexasmusic
Finally, today’s freebie. Here’s a delightful band from Tokyo, Japan named the Watanabes but with a twist! This is what Wikipedia says:
“The Watanabes are a Tokyo based indie pop rock band with members from the UK and Japan. Their jangly alt pop sound has drawn comparisons to melody driven indie acts such as Belle and Sebastian, Teenage Fan Club, Crowded House and 1980’s Liverpool band The Pale Fountains, while their lyrics often touch upon their experiences in Japan… their soft acoustic melodies make an easier comparison to other British bands such as The Beatles or The Kooks… The band are fronted by British brothers Duncan and Selwyn Walsh on vocals and guitar.”

There was a great reaction to the Japanese Concept Car Videos (part 1). Thanks. As I promised, I’d make a part two.
These are cool cars designed by engineers for all the big Japanese car manufacturers through the years that have never made it into production. I think you might agree that these are the coolest designs. Here are a few more selected videos from the wild and crazy, Science Fiction universe of Japanese concept cars.
Since the 1950s, all the big Japanese car manufacturers have been testing and designing cars that, if you saw them on the road, you’d think that it was something out of a Hollywood science fiction movie! Some of these designs are so fab that they are out of this world!
I’ve searched the internet and found some short videos of a few of my favorites. So if you like Science Fiction, and you like cars! Then this is a short trip for you!
If you want to see more fabulous cars then check out #1 in this series: Science Fiction! Japanese Concept Car Videos! 日本のコンセプトカービデオ! robot55.jp/blog/science-fiction-japanese-concept-car-videos-日本のコンセプトカービデオ!/

The title of this post is misleading. It says, “Data on Young People in Japan Show Extremely Difficult Times Coming for Old Media.” That’s wrong; those hard times are already here. Have been for a while. It’s not going to get better, either.
I’ve written before about how the Digital Age would destroy TV. Today I met the president of one of the (if not the) largest internet companies in Japan, and he quite-as-a-matter-of-fact said, “TV and radio have no future.”
The data isn’t good for old media. When people under 25 don’t care about you, barring some sort of miracle, you don’t have a good future.
It’s that simple.
The data is shocking: young Japanese people today have a smart phone or iPad, PC or whatever in their bedrooms. But they don’t have a TV or radio in that same room.
I was shown data at another company that makes content for TV as well as other online platforms; they have seen the writing on the wall and are moving into digital rights management and programming for the internet. The survey I was shown was of people 13 to under 29 and it showed that only 11% had a TV in their bedroom; 6% had a radio (those must all be people over 25). But over 97% had a smart device or PC.
The Japanese youth market obsession with smart devices has even hurt automobile sales in Japan as the Wall Street Journal reports: “Reasons [for the drop in sales of automobiles] include higher gasoline prices and Japan’s graying population. But even more worrying to auto makers are signs that the downturn is part of a deeper generational shift among young Japanese consumers. Unlike their parents’ generation, which viewed cars as the passport to freedom and higher social status, the Internet-connected Japanese youths today look to cars with indifference, according to market research by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association and Nissan. Having grown up with the Internet, they no longer depend on a car for shopping, entertainment and socializing and prefer to spend their money in other ways.”
Give you one guess which devices occupies the vast majority of these people’s free time? Cars or smart devices? Oh, and by the way, one of the places that people most commonly listen to the FM radio is in cars… But young people are not buying those? Double Whammy!
Now you know why Japan’s Niconico Douga gets 5 million viewers for some shows and young people do not watch TV or listen to the radio anymore… The smart device is under their pillow or in their hands all the time.
Do you remember the Ramones song, “Rock N Roll Radio”? I remember it well. The lyrics went like this:
“Do you remember lying in bed, with the covers up over your head, the radio playing so no one can see?”
In 10 years, it’s going to say, “Do you remember lying in bed, with the covers up over your head, Smart Phone playing so no one can see?”
Tech site, The Bridge writes: “Niconico Douga quietly first emerged back in December of 2006… Since then, the site has offered many unique features to its users, successfully accumulating over 30 million users as of 2012. That averages out to a whopping 440,000 new users per month. The user demographic is mostly male (with 67% men and 33% women) and most of the active users are in the 20-29 age range (about 42%). There have been over 8.7 million videos uploaded to the site in total.
In general, the site is sort of perceived as a place for otaku who typically prefer anonymous communication. However since the launch of live streaming videos, people in the mainstream have also joined the site, including but not limited to politicians, idol groups, and music bands. Currently there are almost 100 official channels that live stream content on the site. What’s interesting is that Niconico Douga allows users to sign up using Facebook credentials, and that of course requires your real name. This may have been influenced by Ustream, which uses Twitter and Facebook for sign-in.”
Wikipedia states: “As of October 31, 2011, Niconico has over 23,690,000 registered users, 6,870,000 mobile users and 1,390,000 premium users.”
This isn’t really rocket science, folks. These facts and data do not bode well for TV or FM radio at all.
Did you also know that all smart phones have a FM radio chip built in on them but the makers do not turn it on because they have determined that there is not enough demand for FM radio? Did you know that all Japanese car manufacturers stopped putting FM radios in car as a standard item in 2010?
The writing is on the wall for FM radio. TV will take longer to collapse as Japan has an aging society and those folks watch TV.
Jeez! Rock and Roll Radio by the Ramones came out in 1980? That’s 35 years ago!!!??? Maybe Rock and Roll never ends, but Rock N Roll FM radio doesn’t look like it can make it.
————————
Finally, this isn’t just a trend in Japan, it’s worldwide and occurring in so-called “wealthy nations.” Here’s information from the New York Times: “Over the last 10 years, the average share of Americans listening to radio at any given time has shrunk about 14 percent, or 2.3 percentage points. Teenagers account for a well-recognized chunk of that decline. But Larry Rosin, a radio consultant with Edison Media Research in Somerville, N.J., points out that college graduates are also far less likely to listen to radio than nongraduates, a gap that has widened with time.”
What conclusion can we come to with this information in hand?

It’s time for this week’s Top 3 New Artist Videos for the week of April 7, 2015. This week I want to showcase what we think are some the best girl bands around and share their videos with you. Some of these videos are from last year, but this countdown is only a few weeks old, so I have some catching up to do. I play these artists and these songs on my regular weekly FM radio show, “What the Funday” on InterFM that is broadcast in Tokyo and Nagoya (and all over Japan on the Radiko.jp network. You can listen to that (if you are in Japan) here: http://radiko.jp/).
So let’s get to today’s Top 3.
The first music video is from a Berlin-based Girl Group called Half Girl. I can’t find much information on this group but they are great! I love this track. Half Girl are Julie Miess (Britta), Vera goiter (Luise Pop), Anna-Leena Lutz (The Laughter) and Gwendoline Tägert (Mondo Fumatore) are composed Half Girl. From what I can guess they are considered Berlin’s All Girl supergroup. You will dig this tune and crack up.
Next up is a great band from London, England and this is their second time on our charts. They released their debut album “Out of View” on 28 January 2013, which went in at number 8 in the UK Indie Breakers Chart, and number 2 in the UK Record Store Chart.
And finally, last but not least and at #1 is The Fabulous Miss Wendy! The Fabulous Miss Wendy is a rock/punk/grunge band formed in Los Angeles. I was told by the late Kim Fowley that the Fabulous Miss Wendy is the next big rock female superstar and he compared her to iconic female musicians like Joan Jett. According to “Revolver Magazine,” The Fabulous Miss Wendy is “the sexiest rock star ever”! She started playing at the age of ten and was inspired by punk acts like the Misfits, The Dead Kennedys, and The Ramones. In High School, her classmates voted her “most likely to be a rock star”! Hee, hee, hee…. Is that cool or what?

Have you ever wanted to appear in a music video? Of course you have! Everyone wants to be a star! Have you ever want to appear in a cool rock band’s video? Sure, you have! Now is your big chance! On Friday, April 3rd, 2015 in Shimokitazawa (about 15 minutes from Shibuya), the gang from Robot55 will do the video production and shoot the promo video for the hot new rock band sensation in Japan: Su Ko D Koi! (Here is their Facebook page. If you can, please come and “Like” it: http://on.fb.me/19e1HCn)
We’re going to make the promotional video for the song, “Busu!”
What’s “Busu”? “Busu,” means “ugly” and it’s a new song and smash sensation by Su Ko D Koi.
Su Ko D Koi write their name like this: Su凸ko D凹koi – すっとこどっこい!But, because I can’t read it, nor say it, I write it like “Su Ko D Koi.”
Anyway, like I said, on April 3rd, 2015 at Shimokitazawa you can get your chance to appear in their video. It could be history in the making!
The girl’s will hold a love concert that night at Shimokitazawa Mosaic (here’s a map: http://www.studio-museum.com/mosaic/access/index.html). Su Ko D Koi is performing a “One-Man Live Show.” The doors open at 18:30 and the show starts at 19:00. Pre-sales tickets are ¥2000 + ¥500 drink and Same Day tickets sell for ¥2500 +500 drink at the door.
Jacket the the first Su Ko D Koi that features the hits “Momanaide” and “Busu.”
That’s cool and if you want to be in their video, you can! We aired “Busu” at the radio show and the fan reaction was massive. Twitter went crazy! These girls are going to be big and you can be in their video! The other good thing is before these girl’s get really famous, not only can you can be in their video – the venue is tiny! It only holds 180 people!

In yesterday’s post, “6 Easy Tips For Making a Viral Video” (robot55.jp/blog/6-easy-tips-for-making-a-viral-video/) I mentioned that after making your video, you simply must have a promotion plan. Here is a snippet from that article:
Once the video is made, you must promote! And that means getting everyone down to the computer keyboards and posting the video link anywhere and everywhere possible. And I don’t mean just do it one day and then drop it; you must have a thought out plan of action that runs a few months. Rome wasn’t built in a day, you know! This doesn’t happen by magic, it takes effort. The video on the company webpage, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, company blogs, Linkedin, all social media and everywhere is critical for your success. Get your team to think about possibilities. Make a daily schedule showing assignments.
Of course you could spend a ton of money on promoting your video, but, then again, doesn’t that sort of defeat the purpose? You intend upon making a viral because it is great promotion; it is believable (because regular people are promoting you) and, so, it is cost effective. So we don’t want to spend a ton of money on advertising for our advertisement (sounds absurd when it is put that way, doesn’t it?)
To that end (not spending a ton of money and making an effort) I then introduced dear reader to an artist named Stefano who has made the effort to make a name for himself by making drawings on Euro Bank Notes to promote himself and to make his artistic impression (and protest). His costs must be close to a few dollars but the biggest cost is time, toil and sweat…. But what is the price of fame? Today, Stefano is all over the news and has a reputation of ill-repute, or honor – depending on who you talk to. He is a big name all over the European press.
Stefano Art: No Trespassing!
Now, I hear that defacing or drawing on a Euro Bank Note is not a crime, so I think this is a great way to Guerilla Market your name. Even if it were a crime, good art offends someone and good art might often be considered “dangerous” to the Powers that Be. So I don’t want to get into a discussion on the morality of drawing on bank notes or spray painting trains (that’s a subject for discussion concerning private property rights and not for this space!) After all, wasn’t Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Sex Pistols all considered dangerous at their time and they were subject to book burnings and bans?
Stefano, just by himself drawing on bank notes, isn’t such an original idea. In fact, I remember seeing bank notes that had illustrations on them when I was a child. In my teens, I used to draw pictures on bank notes hoping that, someday, they’d come back to me and I’d see them. I never did see any because they never came back and I drew on hundreds of them.
The point I want to make in showing Stefano is that he made the effort. Can you imagine how many bank notes and how long and how often he had to draw on them, over and over and over? How tedious it must be. Is he still doing it? Yes, it seems. Stefano has been doing this since Feb. 2014. He draws his art and then scans it and then puts the notes back out into the public!
Genius! See? He used the internet to promote his art. By scanning it, the images wind up all over the news, blogs, and social media such as Facebook. I love it!
Interestingly, there is another “Buzz” going in related to bank notes, and drawing on them. This time from Canada! Everyone knows who Mr. Spock is, right? Well, the guy who played Mr. Spock in TV and movies, Leonard Nimoy, passed away a few weeks ago. Rest in Peace.
Well, as with many cultural icons of the modern age, it seems, in some places, especially Canada, Mr. Spock might be more famous in death than in life.
The Canadian government has asked people to stop drawing Mr. Spock on $5 dollar Canadian bank notes. The practice of doing so has become so popular that there is even a name for it and it is called, “Spocking.”
Canadians have been asked to stop drawing Leonard Nimoy-inspired Mr Spock pictures on their $5 bank notes. For years, fans of the famous Star Trek character have been scribbling on the face of former PM Wilfrid Laurier – Canada’s first Francophone prime minister – on $5 banknotes. This gathered pace last week with the death of the actor. Canada’s central bank said earlier in the week that it was not illegal to add Spock’s pointy Vulcan ears, sharp eyebrows and signature bowl haircut to the notes. However, it did encourage citizens to stop their scribbling.
Yeah. The government of the EU and Canada are destroying the value of their respective currencies by money printing and deficit spending, but they don’t want you scribbling doodles on the money. Ha!
Canada destroys the value of the currency by money printing but they don’t want you scribbling doodles on the money. Ironic?
Anyone else see the irony in all this?
Anyway, enough of my political statements. I merely wanted to show you these things and perhaps help kick-start your creative mind to think of new and novel ways to promote without spending so much money! I hope these ideas help you.
See you next time….
Now where is that stack of ¥1000 yen bills and that permanent black marker I bought the other day?
Well, have you ever wondered why some videos go viral? Have you ever wondered how to make a viral video? Well, today, you might be in luck; here’s more free tips.
We been working on producing a viral video for a famous Japanese company. I hope to be able to show that one to everyone soon; we are all expecting that it will be a hit. But in the meantime, to that end, I have been researching data and studying how to make a viral video. You know making a viral video isn’t just blind luck; there is a method to the madness. The making of a viral video comes down to three things: 1) A scientific approach (understanding your target audience and they way they think) and; 2) The artistic touch (humor or a great idea) and; 3) Luck.
Yes, of course, like with everything in life, luck is important. While I cannot guarantee that you will make a viral video by following my points below, I can guarantee that these points will increase your odds of making one. There are 6 key factors in making a viral video and that you definitely will benefit by reading this article.
1) Be funny or outrageous!
Funny and outrageous is probably the best way to go viral. Problem is, how many of us are “funny”? And, even if we are, for business use, is it widely acceptable? (I mean is it “family friendly?)
I write, produce and direct an extremely popular Sunday morning show in Japan. We are pretty outrageous (by Japan standards) for our humor. In our program, we often make “corners” in our show for sponsors. I’ve noticed one thing about big company sponsors; they love you doing outrageous stuff and think it’s hilarious on your show, but they don’t want you doing that on their sponsored part of the show! I mean, they laugh out loud when you make jokes that they are not a part of; but when they get involved they suddenly become VERY conservative.
It reminds me of something I was told many years ago by a Program Director at a big Tokyo radio station (when my program’s rating were breaking the charts). He called me to his office and said, “I want you guys to be funny… But try not to be so funny.” No kidding. I told him that we are either funny or we aren’t… But it is important to keep your target audience in mind!
Like I said, people at companies like it if you do wild and crazy stuff, and “push the envelope,” but they don’t like it when they are a part of it, and their (your) boss is breathing down their (your) necks. So keep that in mind.
Being funny but being widely acceptable? Wow! Of course, that ups the ante quite a lot and makes things much more difficult: How to be funny, yet not take the chance of offending anybody? I suggest talking with your staff! Use the funny and crazy people inside your company or hire professionals (and I mean people who do write humor or comedy for a living! It can be expensive, but it ups your odds of success.)
Here’s a good idea that can’t possible offend anyone (except this kid’s mom!)
2) Think “How would a Las Vegas Magician do it?”
When making your video, remember to try to think like a Las Vegas musician. Remember the last time you saw a good magician? When the magician showed you a trick that made you go “Wow!” You immediately wanted to see it again and you wanted your friends and family to see it too, right? That’s a secret to getting a video go viral.
3) Promote ONE idea and ONE idea only. Don’t Hard Sell!
This is actually kind of easy. Of course you all have heard the “KISS Principle”? The KISS Principle is: Keep it simple, stupid! If you have a great idea, then don’t clutter the message with extraneous information. A great example is the video below. At the end, it shows the product. Simple and sweet!
Now, imagine if, at the end of the commercial, they went through a litany of information like: ingredients, a sale, what grocery stores were carrying the product, their new gallon can? That would just ruin the short and simple message. So keep it as short as possible. Remember: “Brevity is the soul of wit” – Shakepeare
4) Use highly quality production
There’s nothing that more of a turnoff to your video than poor production. The three worst offenders are: Poor lighting; poor sound; and poor or out of focus camera work.
Now, if you are a small company, then professional video services might be just out of reach of your budget. But fear not! I give free video tips every week on this very webpage! Please check out our regular column: Video Tips! Make Your Own Video For Your Business For Free! Part 2〜ビジネス動画を自分で作ってみよう!その2〜 (robot55.jp/blog/video-tips-make-your-own-video-for-your-business-for-free-part-2/)
Here is a TV commercial that I worked on and that is my voice at the end. But I think this is a fine example of the kind of idea that is “cute” and could go viral (if it weren’t on TV constantly already). The idea is simple and funny and I think everyone can relate to it and it is a hit TV commercial.
The guys can especially relate to the second one where they were embarrassed in front of the beautiful women because of their silly antics!
5) Promote!
But what to do? Need a good idea? Need to “think out of the box”? Check this out:
Ever heard of a Greek artist named “Stefano”? He is drawing pictures on Euro bank notes and has become famous for doing so.Will he become rich? I don’t know, but he has very wide name recognition and hasn’t spent much money, only time and effort.
Stefanos has hijacked the euro banknotes including small characters to transform the traditional engravings into scenes to protest and promote himself (lots of good art is protest, is it not?) Of course, I won’t condone this (wink! wink!) but, you have to admit that, by doing this, Stefano has made a big name for himself… A what did it cost him? Not much. He’s all over the European and worldwide press.
Here’s a few examples. This is pure genius in viral marketing.
Stefano and skateboarders. This is some of his “safe” designs.
According to research conducted by Jun Group (2011), videos that are 15 seconds or shorter are shared 37 percent more often than those that last between 30 seconds and 1 minute. If you make your video longer, that stat goes down. Those shorties are only shared 18% more often than videos of longer than 1 minute.
Also, according to research by Visible Measures, 20% of your viewers will click away from a video in 10 seconds or fewer. And it doesn’t get a lot better than that. You’ll lose about 1/3 of your viewers by 30 seconds, 45% of them by 1 minute and almost 60% by 2 minutes.
So keep it short!
And finally, #7! (OK, I said there were six tips, but there’s 7! So sue me!)
7) Use a cat!
(Chuckle!) When all else fails, then use a cat. This is, I think, the Hail Mary pass of all ways to do a viral video… But hey, Grumpy Cat has over 7.5 million “Likes” on Facebook, so who am I to argue with a successful cat? I wanted to use a cat for the top photo of this blog post, but we don’t have a cat…
So, I’m hoping instead of always peeing on the rug, our dog can get a few million Facebook friends and start making millions too! I’m going to name him, “Sort of Grumpy Dog.”

What? You haven’t heard of Ninja Slayer? Well, here’s a quick rundown:
In the distant future at Neo Saitama, some evil ninjas were brought back to life through the use of cybernetic technology and, in a turf war, they killed the wife and children of a Japanese Salaryman, Fujikido Kenji, who escaped death and then his soul melded with that of another enigmatic good ninja. He cheats death and becomes Ninja Slayer a Grim Reaper destined to kill evil Ninja in a personal war of vengeance.
“What?!” Yeah. That’s what I first said. This Ninja Slayer is deliciously ridiculous. I love it!
So don’t forget! Ninja Slayer animation begins April 16th, 2015 at 11 pm on Niconico!
There’s some more very exciting news coming out about the involvement of Robot55 (and the sister company, Universal Vision Ltd. – http://universal-vision.jp/) with the video production about this smash hit adventure.
In my weekly chores, I produce and direct and make the playlist for a very popular weekly radio show on InterFM entitled, “What the Funday” (Every Sunday morning from 8 am ~ 11 am on InterFM) so I am constantly checking out about 30 to 40 new artists every week. So, I see lots of great stuff. Why not share them with you, dear reader? Yes! Why not?
This Week’s Top 3 New Artist Videos by Robot55 (pronounced: “Robot Go-Go” 「ロボット・ゴー・ゴー」) will showcase what I think are the best of those artists and their videos. So, without any further ado, let’s get into it, shall we?
#3) HAPPY FANGS – Raw Nights (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRZM0DDGgYo&t=10)
I read a review of Happy Fangs that said, “A raucous force of noisy guitar and anthemic vocals that thrill me like the late-1970s sounds of X-Ray Spex, Siouxsie, & Suburban Lawns.” Boing Boing online zine wrote: “Happy Fangs is a war-painted and wiry rock trio. Rebecca brings her high-energy vocals. Mr. Cobra brings his grit-pop guitar. Jess brings her hard-hitting melodic beats.”
Wow! I like that! I just had to check them out. Glad I did! They are at this week’s #3 on the video countdown!
#2) Jordan Allen – Set in Stone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRkqHK9hErg#t=79)
Some people like to say Jordan Allen is somewhat like Jake Bugg or Alex Turner. I think Jordan Allen has more of that raw sound that I like. The amazing thing about Jordan Allen is that he isn’t signed to an record label! So, since Robot55 is always cheering for the little guy, here he is at #2!
#1) Findlay – Greasy Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JwqRHE1Q2E)
Findlay is from London. Findlay is now getting a buzz about her and this great video. She was the opening act for Jake Bugg and performed to a sold out crowd at Dot to Dot 2013. This is Pop Music with an edge…. Because I’m such a wimp (and this is a family web site) I didn’t link to her other video, “Electric Bones.” See that one here: Findlay – Electric Bones (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEWt2-3AO_M)
And finally, this week’s giveaway is Shonen Knife. This was shot in Tokyo and Osaka and the total budget was well under $1000! The girls were thrilled with the video and so were their fans!
At Robot55 we make video productions for businesses and services and products, but we also pride ourselves on making videos for art and music. This video was made by the team at Robot55. Our starting price is ¥80,000 and we are sure we can work out something that fits your budget.
