The Gaijin Gourmet: The Best Salad Bar Deal in Tokyo at Big Boy – My Favorite Rock N Roll Diner!!

Ladies and gentlemen, and those of your foreigners coming to Tokyo for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, I have an announcement to make! I have come to the conclusion that the best salad bar deal in all of Tokyo is at my new favorite Rock N Roll diner, Big Boy. The Salad Bar is ¥590 (about $5 USD) for all you can eat!

Big Boy at Futakotamagawa!

In fact, besides an incredible deal on the salad bar, Big Boy might be the best place to drink beer too!

How so? Read on…

When I was a high school student living in the west in the mid seventies, we often went to Bob’s Big Boy. It was cheap, er, I mean, inexpensive and the food was great.

American style large comfortable seating… And, instead of Japan’s J-Pop Hit Parade of Hell, they actually were playing American 1950s and 1960s Rock Music so that’s worth the price of admission!

I didn’t even know they had Bob’s Big Boy (called simply “Big Boy”) in Japan until the other day. I found one, not 5 minutes walk from my house. It is in the opposite direction of the station, so I had never even once walked by it in over ten years. I did the other day when I went for a stroll and what a stroke of luck!

I walked in and checked the lunch menu. I couldn’t believe it. A full lunch set that includes soup and curry rice and white rice for only ¥680!? (about $5.66 USD – and there’s no tipping in Japan!) Who, on a budget, in their right mind would ever go to any McBurgers, when you can get a balanced meal for that price? The lunch set that includes the salad bar and the soup and rice and curry rice (all you can eat salad and rice and curry!) is only ¥960!!! (About $8 USD).

Incredible deal for the whole family! How do these folks stay in business? What a great deal!

My wife tried one of the set menus and she was very satisfied! The hamburger was great and the fried chicken was miles away better than Kentucky Fried Chicken!

Since I have gout, drink too much and am trying not to die soon, I try to eat very healthy if I can. I always try to away from fried foods (and cooked foods) generally because of too much salt, etc. I checked the salad bar menu and prices and that was when my jaw dropped to the floor!

“¥590 for an all-you-can-eat Salad Bar??? Was this a mistake? Was I reading this wrong? ¥590 for an all-you-can-eat salad bar????!!!!” Incredible, but true. I ordered that and loaded up on the veggies and fruits! I ate 5 plates of that!

It was heaven!

I had been going to a place that charged ¥1,980 for the all-you-can-eat salad bar. That is nice too, but Big Boy has a great salad bar at less than 1/3 that price and the salad was fresh and delicious! What a fantastic deal!

This has to be nirvana for vegetarians and salads eaters like me in Japan!

If you aren’t hungry and you just want to sit down and have at the all-you can drink bar then it is only ¥290!

And, finally, the plat de résistance! During weekdays, after your first beer, all your next beers are all half-price! One beer is ¥500 (about $4.17) but the next ones are all half price. So if you drink like me, then you’ll have at least 4 beers. 4 beers on the weekday special will be ¥1250. That’s about $10 USD for 4 beers! Unbelievable!

And there’s no table charge! Think about it, I can go in and sit down at a table and drink 4 beers for ¥1250 (about $10 USD)! That is unheard of!

Also, besides the set menu, Big Boy offers side menus of fried calamari and french fries and all sorts of little snacks that you can wash down with beer! (I recommend the calamari & french fries… They were quite excellent and only ¥290 yen!)

The real test for my family is taking my son to any restaurant. He is a VERY picky eater and generally doesn’t like eating out, excepting at a few (very expensive) restaurants. We took him to Big Boy and he loved it and gave it 9 out of 10 points… (Thank you God!)

That’s not the first time he’s given 9 out of 10 to a restaurant, but was the first time he ever did that for a restaurant that didn’t cost me at least ¥15,000 (about $120 USD) for the three of us. He had calamari & fries, a delicious Auusie beef steak from the dinner menu, all-you-can drink and ice cream dessert; my wife had a ¥960 set menu and all-you-can drink with a dessert; I had the salad bar and all-you-can drink; the damages? ¥4,200 (about $36 USD) for the three of us!

Simply amazing; good, clean restaurant. Delicious food at a very reasonable price – and Rock N Roll music to boot!

If I were you, I’d get over to Big Boy and try out the salad bar and beer deal ASAP.

It’s simply the best deal in Japan!

I give Big Boy 5 out of 5 stars. When a head of lettuce costs ¥260 (about $2.25 USD) at the local grocer, but Big Boy can give you all-you-can eat salad at ¥590 (about $5.05 USD) why go buy groceries?

How do they do that????

You’d better get over the Big Boy soon, because, the way I eat salads, they are going to go bust because of me! Get into this great deal while you can!

Bob and I are now buddies again!

Thinking About Crowdfunding Your Project? A Few Questions You Need to Ask!

(Top: Photo of the shoot for the trailer for the Japanese Rock ‘N’ Roll Ghost Movie we are making…)

I am getting ready to launch a crowdfunding project for a movie. It’s an exciting time. As the time gets closer, and because I have ran a few Start-up companies, several questions have popped into my mind.

I’d like to share these questions with you, in order to help you, too, to run a successful Crowd-Funding campaign (if you ever think about doing that)… Or, at least ask some of the questions you need to ask so you don’t wind up with a problem later.

Until now, I have been involved with three Crowd-Funding projects; two for the “Children With Incurable Diseases” charity and one where I merely introduced a musician friend to a Crowd-funding site to help finance their next album. All three were “successful.”

And there’s the “rub.”

Let me explain; in the case of the children’s charity, we gathered money to donate to the charity and gave the people who contributed a magnet and stickers from our radio show. We didn’t create anything for anyone so there was no obligation from us after the funding campaign ended excepting to send out the gifts to participants. It was Crowd-Funding just to get donations for the children with incurable diseases and their families. I think we gathered 3 or 4 thousand dollars and donated it to the charity. Since there was no further obligation from us, it was simple.

Even if we had only gathered $50, it would have been “successful.” We only donated magnets and stickers that we gave away for free anyway to promote our radio show.

Early days of Crowd-Funding in Japan: Radio Show Crowd-Funding for Children With Incurable Diseases Charity

Early days of Crowd-Funding in Japan: Radio Show Crowd-Funding for Children With Incurable Diseases Charity. I ran the funding alongside my radio show and one of the biggest newspapers in Japan ran a feature on us. (Photo, left to right: Furukawa Taro, Me, George Williams.)

I understand my musician friend did well and finished their album. I merely introduced them to the Crowd-Funding site, so I am not aware of problems with payments, returning gifts to participants and the rest. But the musician finished the recording and the album, so I guess they were happy.

For my up-coming project, things are quite different and questions need to be asked.

For those of us doing Crowd-Funding for projects, I think a problem might come in that folks think the Crowd-Funding is for funding the project, and the project itself is a separate issue. I believe this kind of thinking is a big mistake; the Crowd-Funding must be considered as the financial issue involved with the project so it is at least 1/2 as important as how the finished project comes out.

Let me explain further; I have calculated that my movie project will require at least $60,000 (USD) to finance. Anything over that will go to making a more “gorgeous” film. Anything under $60,000 and I can’t make the film. This is a critical point.

All the Crowd-Funding companies have slightly different terms and conditions. It’s hard to navigate the ins and outs that set one apart from another. Rules vary from company to company and from nation to nation! So Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware!)…

After shopping around, I have had several meetings with the staff of the Crowd-funding company I plan to use and, from these meetings, I have figured out a few things that you (and I) need to know and questions we need to ask before we start any Crowd-Funding campaigns.

At my second meeting with the Crowd-Funding company, I told them that I needed $60,000. But they said that we should “‘Lower the target’ to $10,000 so we can have a ‘successful campaign’ no matter what.” This sounded good at the time, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized why this is a huge mistake and, if your project definitely needs “X” amount, you have to stick to your guns and make your target the same.

Why?

The Crowd-Funding company gets paid on all “Successful Projects.” So, if the target is set at $10,000, and we get $10,000, then it’s successful for them and they get their 20% margin no matter what. This is smart from their company point-of-view because they can get $2000 for their efforts even if we fail miserably to get the money we need to make MY project.

This is a huge problem.

Like I said, I need $60,000 to finish my film. If I get only $10,000, then I can’t make my film. Not only that, but I am out $2000 to the Crowd-Funding site and I then I have to return the $10,000 to the participants; I’m out $2,000 (or $12,000 – depending on how you look at it). So I cannot agree to any “Success Amount” under about $80,000 (because the Crowd-Funding site takes a 20% margin!)

This is what I need: $80,000 – 20% ($16,000) = $64,000. Anything else is a failure. If I make my success amount $10,000 and get only, say, $50,000, then I’m really screwed because the Crowd-Funding company would take their 20% margin ($10,000) but I’d be in a position where I’d either have to pay everyone back (and be out the $10,000) or I have to cough up the money myself or take out a loan somewhere!

No thanks!

If I make the “Success Target” anything under what I need (about $80,000), then I am out 20% to the Crowd-Funding site, and I may not be able to finish my project, so I’ll have to return all the money; not make my film and have to pay the Crowd-Funding company anyway.

That’s a huge risk that I just cannot take.

A “Successful Crowd-funding Project” must meet the amount I need to finish my project, not an arbitrary amount so that, the Crowd-Funding site gets their 20%.

Like I said, I’ve ran Start-Up companies so I understand the rationale as to why the Crowd-Funding sites would want to lower the “Success Target” (they get their 20% no matter what)… But it puts me and my project into a dangerous risk position.

This is the biggest fundamental issue that I can see with Crowd-Funding that, if you are thinking about launching a project, then you need to think about deeply. Crowd-Funding is a relatively new idea to raise money, and I like it. But I can see lots of trouble down the road for folks who set up their Crowd-Funding projects in a financially disadvantageous manner.

Please think about this issue carefully.

Other big questions that I think you need to clear before deciding on any Crowd-Funding company:

1) In the margin from ‘sales’ that the Crowd-Funding company takes, are the credit card charges included? Or are you responsible for another 5% (or more) for the credit card charges too? And what about “returns”?

2) What are your responsibilities for any projects that fail to be completed? In my case, I have a bunch of rock stars in my movie. What if one of them, or the main actor, does a “James Dean” and gets himself killed in a car accident? (Yes, yes. I know that’s why we have car insurance, etc…. But how practical is that that an insurance company would allow me to insure a musician because he’s in my Indies movie? Probably not too likely.)

3) How is the money disbursed from the Crowd-Funding company after the Crowd-Funding campaign is over?

3a) Do they pay you a lump sum before the project is finished? Or, do they offer a “loan” (with interest) to me until the project is completed? (If I were the Crowd-Funding company, I’d definitely do this loan business too!)… But, as the guy who ran the campaign, I doubt that I’d take out a loan on my money that was sent to me for my project and go into debt. I started the Crowd-Funding so I wouldn’t have to take on debt in the first place, right?

3b) If the Crowd-Funding company does 3a (above), then I would seriously consider making my own unique webpage and running my own Crowd-Funding project and keep the 20% (My friends, A.J. Vivani and Sean Springer did so here: http://www.unclesamtamovie.com/#!support-the-film/c1met)

4) Does the Crowd-Funding offer an easy to use list of everyone who donated money and their addresses, etc. (This is obvious, but you’d better ask. The first Crowd-Funding I did for the children’s charity did not offer an easy to use system so this drove me crazy!)

Well, these are all the main issues I have at this moment. I will write more as I dive deeper into this project.

Or, I might not. Today, in 2.5 hours, I have a meeting with the Crowd-Funding people and if we can’t work out details to make sure that I don’t lose sleep over night about this Crowd-Funding, then it isn’t going to happen this time… But, maybe next time it will.

Will write more about it again soon.

*If anyone else out there has had any experiences with Crowd-Funding, good or bad, please let us know in the comments section! Thanks!

Top 3 Videos for Week of May 11, 2015 and the Watanabes from Tokyo!

Welcome back to Top 3 Videos. The Top New Artist Videos for the week of May 11, 2015. And do I ever have some hot videos for you guys and girls today!

First up today, or should I say, “First OFF! today”? Is a rock band from Los Angeles that’s been around since 2009. Wikipedia says,

“Off! was formed in Los Angeles, California in late 2009 by Circle Jerks/Black Flag singer Keith Morris, Burning Brides frontman Dimitri Coats, Redd Kross bassist Steven Shane McDonald, and Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes drummer Mario Rubalcaba.”

The Circle Jerks were a seminal punk band from the late 1970s Los Angeles punk boom. So you know these guys aren’t youngsters. My band, the Rotters, played with them a few times. The first time was at Brendan Mullen’s “The Masque.” I think it was the Germs and the Circle Jerks headlining. We were one of the very first opening bands – you know, the cool bands start at 7 pm – we were on at 5 pm or something – and the only people there at that time were the cleaning ladies and the guys sweeping the parking lot.

This video is hilarious. It is the birthday celebration for lead singer Keith Morris’ 59th birthday. For that birthday, he wants the band to go sky diving. Jack Black stars as a hardcore deranged skydiving coach who takes the guys up in the plane. The trip takes a horrifying, gory and very bloody turn when the LSD kicks in.

#3) OFF! – Over Our Heads – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVl3R3i9wkg

Next up is a new “Garage punk power pop Rockn’Roll” group named Titty Twister from Fukuoka in Kyushu, Japan. Titty Twister are: Howlin’ Kimiko on guitar and vocals, Dee Dee Kyoko on guitar, Maddaddy Shu on drums and Akichang on bass. Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Titty-Twister/187768281258674?fref=ts

#2) Titty Twister – Hibike https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sokacETuDNI

And, next up today is a “Punk/Rock/Stuff” band from Beaumont, Texas that we’ve featured before. Their name is Purple. They feaure;  Taylor Busby (guitar/vocals), Hanna Brewer (drums/vocals), Joe “Prankster” Cannariato (bass guitar). Here’s their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/purpletexasmusic

#1) Purple – Leche Loco – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCXRSSkQXaI

Finally, today’s freebie. Here’s a delightful band from Tokyo, Japan named the Watanabes but with a twist! This is what Wikipedia says:

“The Watanabes are a Tokyo based indie pop rock band with members from the UK and Japan. Their jangly alt pop sound has drawn comparisons to melody driven indie acts such as Belle and Sebastian, Teenage Fan Club, Crowded House and 1980’s Liverpool band The Pale Fountains, while their lyrics often touch upon their experiences in Japan… their soft acoustic melodies make an easier comparison to other British bands such as The Beatles or The Kooks… The band are fronted by British brothers Duncan and Selwyn Walsh on vocals and guitar.”

Science Fiction! Japanese Concept Car Videos 2! 日本のコンセプトカービデオpt. 2!

There was a great reaction to the Japanese Concept Car Videos (part 1). Thanks. As I promised, I’d make a part two.

These are cool cars designed by engineers for all the big Japanese car manufacturers through the years that have never made it into production. I think you might agree that these are the coolest designs. Here are a few more selected videos from the wild and crazy, Science Fiction universe of Japanese concept cars.

Since the 1950s, all the big Japanese car manufacturers have been testing and designing cars that, if you saw them on the road, you’d think that it was something out of a Hollywood science fiction movie! Some of these designs are so fab that they are out of this world!

I’ve searched the internet and found some short videos of a few of my favorites. So if you like Science Fiction, and you like cars! Then this is a short trip for you!

True Prosperity: Grandfather dies. Father dies. Son dies. Grandson dies.

(This article is dedicated to my friend Bevin and everyone who has recently lost a loved one.)

——————————-

An ancient Zen Buddhist story goes like this:

A very wealthy family in China bought a large farm and built a beautiful palace upon it. They wished for good luck, health, and fortune, so they decided to ask a famous Zen priest to write a scroll for them to hang in their den. The priest accepted the job and went back to his shrine to pray for enlightenment.

After a few days, the priest returned with the finished scroll and the entire family gathered around in great anticipation to see the words that the priest wrote for them. The priest said a short prayer and opened the scroll and hung it on the wall.

The scroll said:

Grandfather dies.
Father dies.
Son dies.
Grandson dies.

The entire family was furious at the priest. They shouted and demanded that he go back to the shrine and rewrite the scroll for them.

As the priest was rolling up the scroll, he sighed and said: “I will rewrite the order of names on the scroll in anyway you wish. But I think there can be no other sequence. If all die in this order, I think that is true prosperity.”

My own mother died in a freak car accident in 1994. Of course, I was crushed. I was in Japan and she was in America.
After the car accident, she was taken by ambulance to the hospital. I understand that she floated in and out of consciousness before she died. Since I was so far away, I had no way of seeing her, holding her hand, and saying: “I love you mom. Thank you for everything.” But at least I can be thankful that my father was there to do so when she went away. Many people who die are not fortunate enough to have a loved one with them, to hold their hand, to whisper in their ear: “I love you. We all love you…. Please rest. You may go now.” And with words like these, my mother “let go” and passed away. I will always regret that I couldn’t be there with my mother in her time of need. I thank God that my father could be.

There are too many people in this world who die alone. Could there be a more woeful way to die, than when loved ones cannot be there by your side to say their last, “Good-bye”?

After my mother died, though, I was angry. I was angry at the world and I was angry at God. For months after my mother’s death I had recurring nightmares and the most bizarre dreams. Many of the dreams involved times when I was a boy. I would be playing in a playground and I would see my mother on the other side of a fence. I would cry out, “Mom! You’re back!” And I would begin to sob uncontrollably. My mother would grow angry at me and she’d start to leave. I’d cry out again, “Mom! Come back!” As she walked away, she would turn around, look at me, and always say the same thing: “I cannot come to visit you, if you are going to cry every time I see you.” And with that, she’d disappear into a field of tall grass.

I would always promise not to cry the next time. But I couldn’t keep my promise. I think I saw this same dream just about every night for at least six months.

Then one night, I had the most bizarre dream of all. My mother, as usual, walked away because I was crying, I was on my knees. I had my head in hands to try to hold back the tears. And then suddenly, I found myself in a huge chamber. It was like a colossal courtroom. I looked up and there was an old man sitting in a chair, looking quite frustrated and irate at me. He was massive in size. He was huge, at least 40 or 50 feet high and he was sitting down! He was brushing his beard and looking at me as if he was considering what to do.

I knew exactly who he was, yet I was not afraid of him; I was furious.

I shouted: “It’s not fair! It’s not fair that my mother died in an accident. My mother was still young and healthy. She should still be alive you bastard!” The old man just stared at me. I continued to shout at him. And I began to cry.
Then he calmly said: “So you think it is unfair that your mother has died?”

“Of course it’s unfair!”

The old man sighed and said, “Very well then, I shall allow you to be reborn and I will give you a different mother, and that mother will still be alive today. Would you find this acceptable?”

“A different mother!?” I said. “No… No, thank you.”

I suddenly awoke from my dream. My pillow was wet with tears.

I pondered this strange dream for many weeks after that. Then it dawned on me: Instead of being angry that my mother died in an accident. I should be thankful for all of the wonderful times we spent together, all the hugs and bedtime stories. All the laughs and the great dinners. All the special times that my mother made me feel special, and all the other times she cheered me up when others did not. I should thank God for all the wonderful memories I received from being the son of this loving woman. She was always there for me when I needed her. And now, whenever I see her in my dreams, I do not cry. In fact the dream I often have with her now is one where I am on her side of the fence and we are sitting in the field and having a picnic and smiling together.

I haven’t seen my mother in a while, but I look forward to the next time I do.

I told this story to a priest who has become my friend. He asked me to show him a photograph of my mother. I did. He said: “Your mother was a very beautiful woman. Always keep this image of her in your heart. You are most fortunate that it is you, and not her, who has but memories and a snapshot.”

“How profound!” I thought. And I have always kept his words of wisdom in my heart. I share these words with my friends whose parents have passed away.

If only I could have been lucky enough to be there to hold my mother’s hand and be able to say, “I love you” when she passed away. How thankful I would be; thankful for that moment that I could be there. But I wasn’t.

But she was there to share and be a big part of my life.

I wouldn’t trade those photos or memories for anything in the world.

Would you?

(The photo at the top of the page is my mother and father sometime in the very early 1950s.)

Natsume Soseki and Me – Another Unbelievable But True Story!

I live in a neighborhood that, from what people have told me, is over 100 years old. To Americans, that’s pretty interesting; to Japanese, that’s like, “So what? There’s a million little towns and villages in Japan that are hundreds and hundreds of years old.”

That’s true.

I’ve even been to towns in Kyushu that had temples that were almost 2,000 years old. So, a couple of hundred years old is not that big of a deal here.

The folks who live in my neighborhood all know each other and we greet each other by name whenever we pass by. That’s one of the very nice things about Japan: neighbors know each other and they show manners and respect other people’s ‘space.’

On my particular street, all of the folks who have lived here for 30, 40, 50 years (or more!) are related somehow. I hear this land was farmland 100 years ago and it was owned by the grandfather of all these good people who live here; the Uchida family are blood-related with the Watanabe family (of which there are two Watanabe families; and, of course, they are related to each other). And all of them are related to the Yanai family who live in the back corner of our road which ends in a dead-end besides the Yanai family house.

I also hear there used to be a small temple up the road by where the Yanai house now stands.

Regular readers of mine will know that I always try to be kind to older people. They have lived such exciting lives and they have the best stories to tell. I wrote about one dear friend who passed away a few years ago. (Please refer to: Very Sprite, Alert and Healthy 97 Year Old Guy Gives Tips for a Long Life – modernmarketingjapan.blogspot.jp/2011/03/very-sprite-alert-and-healthy-95-year.html)

Like I said, I love to sit and chat with folks who lived through the good and bad times of the past. In Japan, people who saw World War II and lived through the fire-bombing of Tokyo or the atomic bombings; or experienced the “Japanese Economic Miracle.” Even if they weren’t there in that exact place, they all have their own dramatic and thrilling stories to tell.

I feel sorry for young people who are not interested in these amazing lives these fascinating people have lived. I respect these folks so much. Of course, I always give up my seat on the train for them and try to help them out if I ever can in some small way.

You should too. Why not? We all are going to be old someday and we’ll need all the help and kindness we can get.

But I digress… I was talking about my neighborhood and neighbors. I like to be a good and kind neighbor if I can.

One day, several months ago, I was walking around the neighborhood and saw Mrs. Yanai on her hands and knees doing something on her porch. As I walked closer to investigate, I saw that she was scrubbing off some sort of mildew that had built up on her porch.

“Oh, my gosh! What backbreaking work!” I thought.

Mrs. Yanai is a very nice lady and she is always sunny and smiling. I like her a lot – she sort of reminds me of my own mother. So I ran over to her and asked what she was doing. She confirmed what I had thought so I volunteered to come over with my Karcher high-pressure water cleaner and just blast away at the mildew for her.

It just won’t do to have Mrs. Yanai on her hands and knees scrubbing the porch, would it? So I volunteered to do it.

A week or two later, when I had an off Saturday, the job was done. My device couldn’t clean as well as I had hoped, but it was a little bit of an improvement, I think. Mrs. Yanai seemed a bit happy. I was happy with myself.

Fast forward a year or so and I went to the Yanai family house again this morning to volunteer services. Mr. Yanai invited me into their home and we sat and chat. He’s an extremely friendly guy too and has a tons of great stories. As we were talking, I asked if I could look at some of the many photographs and collectibles they had in their house.

It was then and there I saw a photograph that just dropped my jaw. I knew immediately who the man sitting on the left was in the photo. It was Natsume Soseki! I also immediately knew that this photograph had to be on their living room mantle place for a very good reason; there must be a blood relation to him in the photo.

I said to Mr. Yanai, “Who’s this?”

He stood up and smiled, Oh, that’s Natsume Soseki and my uncle and Natsume Soseki’s grand-daughter. ”

What!!!!!???????

Some of you folks from the west reading this might think, “So what? Who is Natsume Soseki?”

Folks, Natsume Soseki was the guy on the Japanese ¥1000 bills.

Let that sink in for a second. In the USA we have George Washington on the $1 dollar bills. Imagine going to somebody’s house and seeing and old photo of George Washington or George Orwell or Albert Einstein, with some other people and when you ask your host about the photo, he nonchalantly says, “Oh? That’s my uncle!”

The top of your head might blow off! What are the chances of something like that being in your neighbor’s house? In my neighbor’s house! You have a bigger chance of winning the lottery than something like that happening!

Wow!

Here’s what Wikipedia says about Natsume Soseki:

Natsume Sōseki (夏目 漱石) February 9, 1867 – December 9, 1916), born Natsume Kinnosuke (夏目 金之助) was a Japanese novelist of the Meiji period (1868–1912). He is best known for his novels Kokoro, Botchan, I Am a Cat and his unfinished work Light and Darkness. He was also a scholar of British literature and composer of haiku, kanshi, and fairy tales. From 1984 until 2004, his portrait appeared on the front of the Japanese 1000 yen note. In Japan, he is often considered the greatest writer in modern Japanese history.

Natsume Soseki (left), Gyoutoku Toshinori (standing), Hisayo (Natsume Soseki's grand daughter)

Natsume Soseki (left), Gyoutoku Toshinori (standing), Hisayo (Natsume Soseki’s grand daughter)

So that’s the explanation of the photo at the top of this article. In that photo, Natsume Soseki (夏目漱石)is sitting down to the left. He is 44-years-old at the time. Standing is Gyoutoku Toshinori (行徳 俊則). He was a doctor and is the uncle of my neighbor Mr. Yanai. The little girl to the right is Natsume Soseki’s granddaughter, Hisayo.

This is a very rare photo as there aren’t very many photographs of Natsume Soseki in existence and this is in superb condition too. It seems that Gyoutoku Toshinori was in Kumamoto and there he met his friend, Natsume Soseki, purely by coincidence. Natsume Soseki was so pleased that he asked him to sit for a photo session together.

What a treasure! It just goes to show how we must take lots of photographs and videos to show the children of the future!

Mike Yanai Kazuo

And, for my own treasure, here is a photo of me and my neighbor and friend, Mr. Yanai (柳井一生). The nephew of Gyoutoku Toshinori – who was a great friend of Natsume Soseki! And, as they say, any friend of Mr. Yanai is a friend of mine.

Thanks Mr. Yanai for your friendship and the really great and interesting story!

Now you know how close I have come to Natsume Soseki! Gee, I wonder if any of my neighbors had relatives who were best friends with Akira Kurosawa the movie director, or even Shakespeare?

I guess I’ll have to ask around.

Ninja Slayer From Animation and Sexy Mina Shirakawa Hit it Big!

Well, folks, last night, the first episode of “Ninja Slayer From Animation” aired. Along with it, “The TV Show” had its debut.

ロボット・ゴー・ゴー, 格安, ビデオ制作, ビデオ編集,

ロボット・ゴー・ゴー, 格安, ビデオ制作, ビデオ編集,

I reckon I should give you a short report of the results. Well, according to the chief producer, the results were great. He said that more than 1/2 of the viewer remarks were negative and critical of the animation. That’s bad! No, that’s good, actually. Hundreds of thousands of comments were made and the worst thing that could happen is if people didn’t care enough to comment. You know what they say, “Love and Hate are two sides of the same coin.”

He also informed me that during the program, the topic that was #1 on the “Now trending” charts at Twitter was Ninja Slayer. It gets better! Not just #1, but Ninja Slayer From Animation related topics also were trending at #2, #3 and #4 at the same time! So, it’s kind of like the Beatles in the sixties when they had the Top 5 slots on the Billboard Pop Charts!

Ninja Slayer From Animation held the top 1 ~ 4 slots all at the same time! Wow!

Immediately after Ninja Slayer from Animation aired, the segment called, “The TV Show” aired. The TV Show is a short variety program that I created, wrote and produced along with Ken Nishikawa and Motoyoshi Tai.

“The TV Show” (ザ・TVショウ)features interviews with the musicians that make the theme music for Ninja Slayer from Animation. As far as “The TV Show” is concerned, the reaction was very good again! More than 50% of the comments were negative with many commentators saying they didn’t know who the artists were and they couldn’t figure out what “The TV Show” was all about.

I am very happy about that.

The TV Show is supposed to be a sort of “flow of consciousness.” We created it to intentionally make the viewer think, “What the heck is this?” The first time I watched Monty Python’s Flying Circus, in the mid 1970s, I thought, “What the heck is this?” I didn’t realize for the first 15 or 20 minutes that it was a comedy show. Duh! When I finally figured that out, I was hooked for life.

Here’s the trailer for the TV Show:

Unsurprisingly (at least to me) was the audience reaction to Mina Shirakawa, our co-host.  She’s “Japan’s Sexiest Japanese Girl!” (I just made that up! Pretty funny, eh? Get it? “Japan’s Sexiest Japanese Girl”?! Ha! Ha! Ha! She is too!) That’s her in the bikini at the top of this page. She hit it big time on last night’s show. The viewer reaction was massive and they just loved her voluptuous, er,… boobs…er, boos….Boots! Yeah! Boots! That’s it!

They loved her boots!

You can watch next week’s episode on April 23, 2015 at 11 pm Japan Time on Niconico Douga for free (check your local time!) Here is the link to watch it: http://live.nicovideo.jp/watch/lv212629769

Of course, you can check back here for more photos and videos of Mina Shirakawa in the coming weeks!

And thanks so much to all of you for watching our program. We appreciate it!

I Was a Teenage Stand-Up Comedian in Hollywood – Public Speaking and Being Butt-Stark-Naked in Front of a Bunch of Strangers is Good!

(Photo of me, as Nigel Nitro, circa 1980)

I really have worked as a Stand Up Comedian in Hollywood and around in small venues in Southern California when I was a teenager… I was very popular and got paid… OK. That’s not exactly true. I wasn’t a teenager, I was about 21 or 22 years old when I was a stand-up comedian; and it’s probably a bit of a “stretch” to say that I was “popular.” I did get paid a couple of bucks each time too (which was often more than I got from being in the punk band!)

Months before I became a Stand-Up Comedian, I was playing in a punk band and, from that, I got to see how the stage set-up was done for concerts. I saw an opportunity to be able to go on stage, tell off-color jokes and actually get paid a little bit (plus it was a great way to meet girls!) I figured that, in between the bands – while the Roadies were changing equipment on the stage – I could go up on stage and entertain the troops. (I wrote about my punk band in: The White Stripes Jack White and Me (A True Story) (robot55.jp/blog/jack-white-and-me-a-true-story/)

I actually went to clubs and owners to sell myself and my routine. For a while there, I got jobs; a lady from the department store I worked at actually got me lots of jobs too. She got me jobs at some sort of social events! She could have been a good manager! At that time, I was telling jokes in front of crowds of 50 ~ 200 people one or two weekends a month for a short while!

Sometimes I did so well, and the crowd liked my jokes so much, that the fans were crowding the stage and throwing coins at my feet. This time I am not exaggerating!

Other times, with the very same act and original jokes I wrote, even the next night in front of a different crowd, it was like I was giving a speech at a fricking funeral; it was dead. I definitely am not exaggerating about that either.

I was always confused as to why I was such a hit one night, then the next night, it was terrible! Like night and day!

The first time people threw money at me, I was mad because I thought they were throwing stuff at me to get me off the stage. That was until a friend told me, “Wow! You were great! People were even throwing money at your feet!”

Getting up on stage, by yourself, is much more difficult than people can imagine; you are completely alone. If you are in a band, that’s scary enough, but, in a band, you have your band members and instruments to hide behind. Being a stand up comedian is just you, naked (figuratively speaking), on the stage with a few dozen or, even hundreds of people just staring at you. Their eyes pierce you and their expectations are quite high (or incredibly low – which can be a problem too!) Their eyes and faces are saying, “Entertain me! make me laugh or get off the stage.”

Being a Stand-Up Comedian is a very rough job.

I did this gig, off and on, from 1979 until early 1981 or so.

My very last stand up routine was at my university at a talent show. People were roaring with laughter. I couldn’t figure it out. They were laughing in all the wrong places! I later asked a girl why people were laughing so much and she said, “Your facial expressions were hilarious!” I couldn’t figure that out. If anything my facial expression were of confusion because I couldn’t figure out why people were laughing at my jokes in weird places! It was then and there that I decided that I wasn’t good enough and didn’t have what it takes to be a Stand-Up Comedian.

But I’m very glad I tried my luck as a Stand Up Comedian. Being a Stand-Up Comedian is a great way to become a great public speaker. It is also a good way to overcome inhibitions and to learn how to control a crowd’s behavior.

How and why did I ever first become a Stand-Up Comedian? Let me explain further…

In about mid 1979, a few months after Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols died, my punk band broke up. I was quite disillusioned with the entire “Punk Thing” by then anyway. Sid dying (he was my hero) was the last straw for me.

But, I had loved being on the stage as a Punk band vocalist and wanted to stay and hang out in Hollywood. So I decided try try my hand as a Stand-Up Comedian. It made sense to me at the time.

Being the front of a punk band was powerful. It was also a lesson in crowd control. When my band ended, at first, I wanted to start another punk band but everything I tried just didn’t work out to my liking. Also, I had learned a lesson from playing in a band with other people who weren’t so dedicated; having to depend on other people sucks!

Being a Stand-Up Comedian is really just you against the world, it seems. It’s a great experience and, no matter your age, I think everyone can benefit from having to stand up in front of a bunch of strangers and give a speech.

After all, giving a speech and doing stand up comedy are first cousins in the public speaking world.

In Japan, you can sometimes see young people standing at a busy train station and giving speeches. I hear it is a kind of initiation at some companies to make their new young employees overcome their inhibitions and become better representatives and salesmen. I think it is good.

I will always fondly look back to my 20 or 30 times as a Stand Up Comedian. Sometimes I was the funniest guy! King of the hill! Other times I was a pathetic little loser standing butt-stark-naked in front of a crowd of people without a friend in the world!….

Both are great learning experiences.

Everyone can benefit from public speaking exposure like that.

Like they say, “Don’t dream it. Be it.”
