初期のアニメ!Early Animations! Part 4

This week, I’d like to enjoy some very early animations with you and give you some interesting background too. These productions are excellent in their concept and design, I think. The very last one at the bottom even has a great script worthy of a full length motion picture, but done in animation! Of course, if that were done as a motion picture, it would cost millions of dollars!

First up today is one of the early animators, Germany’s Oskar Fischinger.

Fischinger animated anything and everything he could find in a series of short abstract art films during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1934 he created an animation called, “Composition in Blue” which is considered his signature work. Walt Disney was so impressed with his work that in late 1938, he hired him to create the “rolling hills” footage for the opening sequence of Fantasia to the music of Bach’s “Toccata & Fugue.” Fantasia was released on November 13, 1940. Wikipedia says: “As of 2012, Fantasia had grossed over $76.4 million in revenue and is the 22nd highest-grossing film of all time in the U.S. when adjusted for inflation. Fantasia, is ranked by the American Film Institute as the 58th greatest American film in their 100 Years… 100 Movies and the fifth greatest animated film in their Top 10 list.”

Here is Oskar Fischinger’s An Optical Poem (1938) – Classic Short Film (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=they7m6YePo)

After our last issue of “Bizarre Animations,” John in Melbourne wrote to me and asked what the difference was between “Stop Motion Animation” and “Still Motion.” They are different, but close. Wiki says that: “Still motion is a method of displaying many images one after another as frames, using the technique of “frame-by-frame”, similar to the concept of stop motion. The difference between this and stop motion, however, is that still motion is not a method of animation and therefore, each frame does not have to be related in any way.”

So Still Motion is using still photos and is often used in horror films. For example, a sequence of images appear on screen, flashing at a fast speed to intensify the moment (like a crime scene or a memory sequence). Of course, these flashing scenes typical to a Still Motion would be accompanied by scary music. Still Motion is also used to portray flashbacks, dreams, someone’s life flashing before their eyes, and the scenes will allow the viewer to understand a concept in a short period of time. It’s kind of like a slideshow.

Here is an example of a well made Still Motion that is interesting to watch.

Her Morning Elegance / Oren Lavie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_HXUhShhmY

Next up are two videos that I think are a real treat. They are by a British video production and animation company called, “Bolex Brothers.”

The Bolex Brothers is an independent British animation and production studio based in Bristol in England. The Bolex Brothers specialize in stop motion animation and have produced many short films and commercials, as well as one stop motion feature film, The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb (which is the last video at the bottom of the page!) The Bolex Brothers are named after the Bolex brand of 16mm cameras that were once popular with animators, and film makers in the 50s throughout the 80s before digital cameras became popular. The Bolex Brothers films are often bizarre and surrealistic. Their films often employ experimental and quite uncommon animation techniques such as pixilation (posing and shooting live actors frame-by-frame).

Here is the Bolex Brothers – The Saint Inspector https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPfGqfH0R98

And finally, for your enjoyment, like I promised, here is the Bolex Brothers production of the The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb. This is an excellent animation but it is almost 1 hour long. Watch when you have time.

Well that’s it for this week’s animations. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did.

Creating and Doing Quality Work Takes Planning

(Ninja Slayer News at bottom!)

Out of the mouths of babes (oft times come gems) – Ancient proverb

When working on any project, be it a company, community or school project, nothing motivates people more than getting them involved and letting them know that their opinion is important and respected.

A good manager will listen to all ideas and opinions, attempt to get a consensus or at least understanding from the members, then make a decision.

There are four things I always like to keep in mind whenever I am doing any project. These are things that I find I must force myself to do as they are not easy to achieve. Those things are:

1) Deciding that, if you are going to do it, you are going to do it world class.

2) Understanding that to do world class you need to plan and make the effort. Old Japanese saying: 80% of success is in planning.

3) Listen to everyone’s ideas and get them involved.

4) Nothing motivates people more than knowing they are respected and nothing gets them to do a better job than letting them feel “ownership” in a project. And that’s the key to getting great work out of mediocre workers.

I think these four points are critical for success in any project, whether it is a video project or planning and designing just about anything!

Heck, even planning a good event like a birthday party or wedding has the same rules.

Nothing makes up for lack of money more than a bunch of great ideas and the best way to get great ideas is to listen to everyone. Two heads are better than one… I reckon it stands to reason that three heads are better than two. You’ll get those great ideas through great communication and brainstorming with your team.

Like it says in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, “Don’t dream it. Be it.” We are reaching for the stars.

For your company projects, are you discussing and planning enough with your staff before you jump into the project or are you shooting from the hip? Remember, 80% of success is in the planning.

Teamwork requires team effort and team opinion….

Don’t do like Dilbert’s boss says, “Teamwork is a lot of people doing what I say.”

Teamwork is getting everyone involved, listening to them all, making them feel respected and giving them “ownership” of the project.

NINJA SLAYER! Right now, the team at Robot 55 is working on the information program for the animation entitled Ninja Slayer that starts April 16, 2015 at 11 pm on Niconico. (http://otakumode.com/sp/ninjaslayer/). I am confident that our program with Ninja Slayer will be a success as we strive for world class quality – in spite of a shoestring budget.

Before even starting and accepting the job, we discussed for several hours different ideas and ways to approach the program. Then we came up with what we thought was a good starting point.

We’re glad we did.

The discussion and planning are a crucial part of the success of this video project… It is necessary for the success of any project.

Niconico is announcing our show to the world on April 11, 2015. The show begins April 16. We’ll be having a cool video preview for you right here on this Robot55 blog on April 11.

Stay tuned!

Top 3 New Artist Videos (03/31/15) and Some Sad News 〜ミュージックビデオも制作

Hey! We’re back for this week’s Top 3 Countdown. Welcome!

But first up, some incredibly sad news from local news sources…

The entire nation of Japan was in total and complete shock today when on live national TV last night, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was devoured by a giant carnivorous man-eating plant that somehow wound up in NHK news studios by accident. The plant was originally destined for the Botanical Garden Ueno Zoo, but through a mix up with deliveries, the extremely dangerous massive Amazonian Man-Eating Plant was delivered to the news studio where Abe was scheduled for a speech, while a bouquet of pretty flowers went to the zoo.

While millions of shocked viewers looked on, the plant first criticized the suit Abe was wearing, then grabbed the prime minister and swallowed him whole head first. Staff at the news team tried to save the prime minister by shouting at the plant to eat former prime minister and current finance minister Taro Aso instead. Unfortunately, their efforts were too little, too late.

It is expected that the announcement of funeral proceedings will be announced to a nation in mourning later today. Abe will be sorely missed.

(Thanks to Frazier Smith for the update and inspiration in these difficult times.)

Now! Onto the Top 3!!!! Yippee!

Today at #3 is a band from Manchester, England called “The Watchmakers.”

Backseatmafia says: “The band have been on a steep upward curve, after their self-produced demos ‘Before Questions Became’ and ‘Waves’ garnered the band the attention of press and gained them airplay from John Kennedy at XFM, and via BBC Manchester Introducing. They’ve headlined two sold out Psychedelic Happenings in Manchester and have supported the likes of The Pretty Things, Jacco Gardner, Dark Bells and Exit Calm, and in February played a BBC Showcase at which 6music declared them ‘Ones to Watch’.”

The Watchmakers – Illumination  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jniKTKzpi9Y#t=130

#2) Next up is another new band to look out for; the Mirror Trap.

Noise Cannon wrote this about The Mirror Trap and their recent tour with Placebo: “Vocalist Gary Panther Moore glides from side to side as he produces stern vocals that highlight his talent. The energetic band on stage seem to be strangers to the crowd, however, their dynamic performance pays off as the audience cheer with admiration. Clearly shown live, The Mirror Trap have taken a great influence from Suede, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Placebo themselves. They lure you in with great hooks and concrete rhythms using their Scottish charm – they share a few risque stories, which instantly sets off laughter to a now cheery crowd.”

The Mirror Trap – Little Ease  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bav5Bry_cAs

#1 Great Cynics

The Great Cynics are a Uk band that has been called a “big guitar pop punk band.” They have big, bright pop hooks, and the resulting music is tremendously good.

That’s it for this week! See ya next week!

Watch These 3 Short Movies Without Crying? Can’t Be Done!〜【注意】涙腺崩壊映像【感動】

英語分からな?問題ない!ビデオをクリック!

Thanks to everyone for the kind messages about yesterday’s post about hiring the handicapped to become a part of our team. (If link doesn’t work, copy and paste this into your browser: http://robot55.jp/blog/looking-to-hire-the-handicapped-for-video-editing-at-home/).  We will keep on trying and keep on going forward. With your support, I know we can do this.

Thanks so much.

In the spirit of opening our hearts and trying to make this a better place to live, as well as a “thank you!” present for all our well-wishers, today I’d like to show you three very touching videos from Thailand. Is this an attempt at pulling at dear reader’s soft heart strings? Why, yes it is. It is also because I am a big softy and these things make me cry too. (Heck, I cried in the Disney cartoon Dumbo!) Today’s short videos are very well done and make my water works flow also! I think you’ll like them a lot! I do.

Why does Thailand have so many heart ripping videos today? Maybe it’s because Thailand was such a desperately poor country (still is in many ways) for so many centuries. Things have gotten better, but westerners cannot imagine the poverty in nations like Thailand (or India) that still exist today… Maybe these heart-wrenching videos come about due to Thailand’s Buddhist history. I am not sure.

The first video is about a blind boy who saves a baby bird. This movie speaks for itself. Watch this and see if this doesn’t jerk your heartsrings….

I love how they got a real actor with a sight disorder to play the part. Genius. Well done!

The next video is a video that is perfect for Japan and addresses the social problem of bullying. This one, too, needs little explanation…. The note the little boy receives at the start of the video says, “Loser!”

The note the little boy receives at the end of the video says, “Teach me!” Watch it!

Brilliant!

Finally, this is the best of the bunch. Actually, I find this video production to be quite excellent and I am happy to see how this was adapted… No! Is this an ancient story? Or is this a modern story? I am leaning to believing that this is an ancient Buddhist story.

Here is an English adaptation that I found:

“One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”

“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.”

He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.”

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Year’s later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation.

When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case. After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She began to read the following words: “Paid in full with one glass of milk. Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.”

So I am sure, now, this is an ancient story. Now that you know the story, you don’t need to know the language. The video adaptation is superb:

It’s a wonderful day.  Thank you for sharing your time with us today.

Please give your loved ones a hug. Cherish all that you have. Kindness to others will be repaid to you in good karma…

As the final video says, “Giving is the best communication.”

Looking to Hire the Handicapped for Video Editing at Home

Because of the internet, many people no longer have to leave home or take public transportation to and from work; they can perform their job duties from home.  This time should be a watershed time for the disabled and handicapped to work and contribute to society. As the father of a girl who is permanently confined to a wheelchair, it has been a sort of mission of mine over all these years to do so. As a small company, we want to help them to do so.

We are in the process of hiring physically impaired folks for our company. At first, just a few folks, they earn decent money editing video. At this very moment, we are looking for someone disabled but has experience editing video using Final Cut. They need to have experience with Final Cut software and be able to observe video footage and listen to music and make edits. Native Japanese ability a must. Experience in video and art and design a plus.

We prefer folks who live in Tokyo or Yokohama, Chiba area. For now, we are merely looking for one experienced person; yes, the hurdle is high. But soon we will be hiring people who have little or no experience and we aim to train them and give them a profitable skill. I will announce that job opening soon. (A Japanese language version of this article will be posted tomorrow).

What is the job precisely? Simply video editing. Look at the photo below. It is a photo of the top of this page. On the left, in the red circles, are two videos. One is 30 seconds, the other is 60 seconds. It is very high quality professional job at a super low price. You can scroll up to the top of this page to click and watch these videos.
Robot55 does professional world-class video productions at a fraction the cost of the competition and we aim to make society a better place with your help.

Robot55 does professional world-class video productions at a fraction the cost of the competition and we aim to make society a better place with your help.

Here is a new video we made yesterday:  (If link doesn’t play, copy and paste this into your browser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbhtRDMcBTY)

We are now looking to hire a physically impaired person who can perform a part time job doing video editing on Final Cut at home. As with all video editing jobs, this job has no set work hour schedule. The editor can do the work at their convenience.  It takes about 3 – 5 hours to edit one video. Then, for the starting pay, they will be paid ¥6,000 ~ ¥9,000 per video. They can get pay raises once they become proficient with our system. The pay is much better than working at a fast food restaurant or convenience store. You never have to use time riding a train back and forth; you never have to leave home. Finish the job and upload it back to us. Simple.

We need to hire someone who has experience with Final Cut video editing soon (part time). I think the work will only be 1 video a week at the start… And then, if business goes well, we can increase. We are very flexible for our part time worker’s schedule too.

The good candidate will need an newer model Apple PC and Wi-Fi at home.

If you are interested or know someone who might be, have them contact us. Let’s work together having fun making videos and making the world a better place to live.
Interested or know someone who might be? Write to Mike or Ken at: contact@robot55.jp

NOTE: The Politically Correct crowd really confuse me sometimes. So much so, that in an article like this, I am afraid to use certain terminology. Is it OK to say, “Disabled,” or “Handicapped?” I’m not sure. I do not mean to offend anyone and just want to get to the point as quickly as possible. Politically correctness has gotten out of control. I don’t know what to call my own daughter! Some call her disabled, some call her handicapped, some call her wheelchair bound…. I call her “perfect!”

MORE NOTES:
Truth be told, everyone has a disability of some sort…

Top 3 New Artist Videos (03/25/15) 〜ミュージックビデオも制作

Hey! We’re back for this week’s Top 3 Countdown. Welcome!

First off, a hat tip to my friend in Osaka, Kevin Riley. Kevin was complaining about some of the songs a few weeks ago, saying they were, “Too mellow.” He wanted to, “Rock!” he says.

Damned hippies!

OK. So, this week due to popular demand (from Kevin) we’re going to rock with some more video productions from brand new artists that I think are way cool!

First up today is a band from France. It seems to be a guy and a girl. Their band name is The Limiñanas. That’s all I know about them and all I can find out about them from English language press. Kevin Riley speaks French, maybe he could do some research for us! Seriously, I can’t find really information about this band, really.

Anyway, I did find one thing… This is from a review in the Guardian:

“French pop in its purest form hasn’t really got its groove back since the 60s, but, wisely, it’s this very era that this Perpignan duo mine, marrying fuzzed-out psychedelia and agreeably rambling rock with the pop sweetness of that decade’s chansons. The ghost of Gainsbourg is felt most keenly in Votre côté yéyé m’emmerde, a softly spoken-word litany of icons and celebrities. Not hero worship, though, but an eye roll at the cute-ification of the past; its title translates to something like “your yé-yé view annoys me”, or, more literally, “enshittens me”. It is, in other words, a perfectly Gallic “bof” of a pop song.

Uh? What did he just say? Yeah. See? I can’t find out anything about this band. So check the video and you’ll know about as much as I do!

#3) The Limiñanas – Je Suis Une Go-Go Girl (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk9EdnErhMk)

Next up is a two girl group from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma that formed in 2009. And their name is Sonic Youth. Er, no! That’s not their name. But if you like Sonic Youth, you are going to dig this! The band consists of Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse, who both can play several instruments. They make songs alternating instruments, in a childlike yet heavy and mature style with very and poetic lyrics and melodic arrangements. Is the rudimentary musicianship part of the act? I can’t tell because some of it really rocks! They play a bunch of different styles from riot grrrl to, get this:  piano-based indie punk/pop.

#2) Skating Polly – Alabama Movies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDA-lzxcFyQ)

OK. Here we are at #1. Now this is HOT! I love this! This trio is from Texas and they are called “Purple!” (OK, Kevin Riley, you will dig this BIG TIME TOO!) In thes video they are playing at a party and I cen definitely imagine rocking out to this band! MY GOD! They have a hot blonde drummer and she is the singer too! When was the last time you saw that happen? Never, right? Her name is Hannah Brewer and she also writes the lyrics. And she growls when she sings! Hot! Hot! Hot! Click this video and watch right now! You can thank me later!

#1) Purple “Wallflower”  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfx7kSYZvNo)

Well that’s all the videos for this week.

If you want to be in a music video, and you are in Tokyo, we are shooting a video for a hot new girl’s band on Friday, April 3 in Shimokitazawa. Here’s information on that: Want to Be in a Star in a Rock Video? You Can! The New Su凸ko D凹koi Video! 日本語の情報は一番した!

Have you ever wanted to appear in a music video? Of course you have! Everyone wants to be a star! Have you ever want to appear in a cool rock band’s video? Sure, you have! Now is your big chance! On Friday, April 3rd, 2015 in Shimokitazawa (about 15 minutes from Shibuya), the gang from Robot55 will do the video production and shoot the promo video for the hot new rock band sensation in Japan: Su Ko D Koi! (Here is their Facebook page. If you can, please come and “Like” it: http://on.fb.me/19e1HCn)

We’re going to make the promotional video for the song, “Busu!”

What’s “Busu”? “Busu,” means “ugly” and it’s a new song and smash sensation by Su Ko D Koi.

Su Ko D Koi write their name like this: Su凸ko D凹koi – すっとこどっこい!But, because I can’t read it, nor say it, I write it like “Su Ko D Koi.”

Anyway, like I said, on April 3rd, 2015 at Shimokitazawa you can get your chance to appear in their video. It could be history in the making!

The girl’s will hold a love concert that night at Shimokitazawa Mosaic (here’s a map: http://www.studio-museum.com/mosaic/access/index.html). Su Ko D Koi is performing a “One-Man Live Show.” The doors open at 18:30 and the show starts at 19:00. Pre-sales tickets are ¥2000 + ¥500 drink and Same Day tickets sell for ¥2500 +500 drink at the door.

That’s cool and if you want to be in their video, you can! We aired “Busu” at the radio show and the fan reaction was massive. Twitter went crazy! These girls are going to be big and you can be in their video! The other good thing is before these girl’s get really famous, not only can you can be in their video – the venue is tiny! It only holds 180 people!

So this is your big chance! Come and grab stardom! Come and be in the video!

Here’s information in Japanese too!
