Gaijin Gourmet! New Delicious Yakitori (Chicken BBQ on Sticks) In Futakotamagawa!

Finally! There’s a delicious Yakitori (BBQ chicken on sticks) in Futakotamagawa. I am a regular there and went there again last night to participate in the venue’s fare and was, as usual, quite pleased.

http://youtu.be/htPvQMqEo8c

(The above video was made by Ken Nishikawa and me! If you are interested in an inexpensive video advertising solution for your business, contact Robot55! contact@robot55.jp)

The shop’s name is “Flat.” It is a 5 minute walk from Futakotamagawa station on the Den-en-Toshi Line. (Two stops by express train – six by local train – from Shibuya). It is on the side of the station a few minutes walk from Takashimaya so it’s a great place to go if the ladies want to go shopping too!

Downstairs seats 12. Upstairs “Zasshiki” (japanese floor tatami style) Seats about 10.

Room for about 12 to seat on the first floor and a standing bar for four people or so. On the second floor, there is a tatami room that seats ten.

Friendly, polite staff

Friendly staff and a spic and span cleanliness (always a must for the Gaijin Gourmet!)

Spotless kitchen

The kitchen is kept spotless and anyone can easily view the food preparation. The standing bar is directly opposite the barbecue rack (to the left of this picture) so anyone can see how clean and spotless the facilities are.

It says, (ふらっと 炭火焼)”Flat Sumibiyaki” (sumibiyaki means “cooked over charcoal”)

All the cooked chicken items I had were very delicious.

I don’t like dethawed frozen meats and the menu at Flat had fresh chicken. Delicious. It is about ¥160 per piece, which is a tad bit pricy, but like I said, it is not frozen meats so the taste is superb… Good Yakitori never needs sauce and only salt. I don’t even use salt so I can really taste good meat. This place has good quality chicken! Fresh!

The owner and head chef is Shimodai san. If you go there, tell him “Mike sent you!”

Gaijin Gourmet – Beware! The Worst Noodle Restaurant in Tokyo?

Welcome to another installment of the Gaijin Gourmet. Today we are definitely scrapping the bottom of the barrel for, er, “restaurants” and cheap places to eat. Today I was asked to write a review of “Donbei.”

Donbei is a, er, “restaurant” on Shibuya Japan Railways (JR) Yamanote Line Platform. I use the term, “restaurant” loosely because Donbei only serves instant noodles! Get it? They only pour hot water into plastic bowls of instant noodles!

Do you call that a “restaurant”? Are you kidding me?

As most of you could probably guess by the high quality prose available in the Gaijin Gourmet ®, I get paid a thousand dollars per word ® for each of these articles I write! But I was chewing off my fingernails wondering if I should accept or decline this, er, “restaurant” review. But, for the good of humanity, I decided to persevere and move forward.

I’ve eaten school lunches; I’ve eaten convenience store bento; I’ve even eaten my first girlfriend’s souffle she made for me as a bizarre dating experiement! Urgh!

But this? What had hell wroth?

A “restaurant” review of an establishment that pours hot water into instant noodles??? What? The same kind of instant noodles that the convenience store sells for ¥120 yen?

I wrote a one word review: “No!”

Then my editor said they wouldn’t pay me for just one word. Cheapskates!

I then wrote a two word review that said, “Absolutely not!”

Still, even at more than twice the letterage, that wasn’t enough for the slave drivers that run Robot55!

I explained that if I wrote more than two words, I could do nothing but devolve into lines of invective and how much I hate instant noodles and hate myself for actually even considering for a moment in accepting this assignment.

The Gaijin Gourmet® might be a cheapskate, that I often have a beer* at home before going out to drink just to save money, but even he has to draw the line somewhere! (*= Actually a cheap beer substitute like Happoshu.)

I have my pride!!!!

Now, normally, the Gaijin Gourmet’s job is to show you, dear reader, how you can get a great meal, in an expensive city like Tokyo, for under $5 (USD). That’s my mission and I’m sticking with it. There’s a bunch of links below that point you, dear reader, into the right direction for some delicious, healthy and inexpensive food for you and the whole family (I have four kids too!)

But, today? Today is different! Today worse than a can of tuna that’s twenty years past expiration date! Today’s post is similar to my warning about asking Japanese girls on a date (please refer to: Gaijin Gourmet Advice for Foreign Gentlemen Living in Japan!); today is a warning to STAY AWAY from noodle restaurant’s that are on train platform’s or inside of the train or subway stations.

Generally, speaking, they can be cheap, but if a noodle shop is inside the train or subway station, then it’s a good bet that they are all mostly TERRIBLE!

Front of Donbei at Shibuya Station

Front of Donbei at Shibuya Station

And, of all the terrible “restaurants” that exist in Tokyo, today I have the displeasure of warning you to STAY AWAY from Donbei at Shibuya JR Station (it’s on the platform heading towards Shinjuku). This place might be the worst noodle shop in all of Japan!

There were actually three customers there at lunch time!

There were actually three customers there at lunch time! You kidding me????

“The worst in Japan? How that be?” you say? Well, it looks like a nice restaurant from outside, but all they serve are instant noodles! Really. No kidding. You buy a ticket from the ticket meal machine and then hand it to the kitchen staff and they rip open an instant noodle pack and pour in hot water!

And people actually go there? WTF?! Are you kidding me???? I thought people only eat this kind of instant noodles when they are at home late at night; or when there’s a typhoon and they are stuck at the office! You mean, people actually go outside and eat this stuff? Voluntarily?!

This is either a sick joke or some genius idea! I’m not sure!

Well, I can say the kitchen is spotless... Should be when the only thing they do is boil water.

Well, I can say the kitchen is spotless… Should be when the only thing they do is boil water.

You know, I don’t eat this sort of instant ramen at home anyway. I used to. But this stuff isn’t all that healthy for you, you know? It’s all just chemicals reconstituted and reformed to look and taste like food. It isn’t real food. Stay away from all these sorts of places!

donbei-tables

Ah, the second time I looked inside it was about 2 pm… It was empty. Any surprises there?

The above photo was the second time I actually looked inside this fine dining establishment. It was the last….

You know, it takes hard work becoming the best at anything, be it a restaurant, a band, a company, anything… It also takes an incredible amount of effort to be the worst…. If you think you’ve eaten at some terrible places, then I suggest that you go out an try Donbei so that you can actually realize just how lucky you’ve been so far!

I figure Donbei must be some sort of promotional gimmick… Because there’s no way they are making any money doing this since the place is always empty… And, here I am, promoting this place with today’s post. Sheesh! For all I know, because of this article, Donbei will become a famous must-see tourist attraction in Shibuya for foreigners before the Tokyo Olympics.

Move over Hachiko (the dog statue)! Donbei has arrived – and you don’t even have to leave the station!

Gaijin Gourmet! The Best, Most Delicious Soba Restaurant in Shibuya and Shinjuku? Shinshu Soba!

It’s time once again for the original and world famous Gaijin Gourmet!

The votes are in folks, there is a winner for the best and cheapest while being extremely delicious soba restaurant in Shibuya and Shinjuku and that winner is Shinshu Soba.

Now, I know I announced the best Soba Chain in Tokyo as being Yude Taro. Please refer to: Gaijin Gourmet – Best Soba Chain in Tokyo?Yude Taro and ¥220 Draft Beer?! and I stand by that recommendation. But, if you are within 1 minute of Shibuya station or within 3 minutes of Shinjuku station then I must make an exception and recommend Shinshu Soba as the best, and most delicious for the price.

Shinshu Soba’s shortcoming? Even though it is a chain-restaurant, there are only two restaurants in the entire chain! Yude Taro is almost everywhere inside of the Yamanote Train Line loop around Tokyo!

Today, let’s look at what is undoubtedly my, and my close friend’s, very favorite soba shop in Shibuya; Shinshu Soba!

Front entrance of Shinshuu Soba at Shibuya

Front entrance of Shinshuu Soba at Shibuya

Incredibly, the best soba in Shibuya is also the closest to the station (how did that happen?) Shinshu Soba is about 1 minute walk from Shibuya. It’s 10 seconds from the Mark City Building… Walking directly from JR Shibuya station, when you see the escalator to go up into Mark City, keep walking straight (The pachinko places are to your right). turn right at the second small street. There is Shinshu soba on your left. Can’t miss it.

Menu outside the door of Shinshuu Soba

Menu outside the door of Shinshuu Soba

Shinshu Soba caught my eye because the first time I went there, the place was packed with women. Why is this important in Japan? Because if an establishment (especially a basically stand-up eating place that caters to businessmen, is packed with women, that can only mean one thing: The food is great and the prices fantastic and the place is clean!)

The kitchen at Shinshuu Soba

The kitchen at Shinshuu Soba

Fast service, delicious food, great prices and a spotlessly clean kitchen. What more could you want? Oh, and the Shibuya restaurant does have seating for about 10 people… But if you want to sit down, do not go there during the lunch or dinner rush. There’s a line of people to get in at those times. Another sign of a great place to eat at excellent prices.

The traditional soba dishes and a much larger selection of tastes that even women and children like!

The traditional soba dishes and a much larger selection of tastes that even women and children like!

The prices at Shinshuu Soba and Yude Taro are comparable. But! Shinshu Soba does beat out Yude Taro for the Mori Soba (pictured on the right above). That’s a plate of delicious healthy cold soba noodles for $2.00 (USD) and, of course, in Japan, no tipping! Can’t beat it anywhere!

Katsudon (fried pork cutlet on bed of rice) and plate of cold soba for ¥600 (about $4.80 USD)

If you want to eat healthy soba noodles and you are near Shibuya or Shinjuku station, the you can’t beat Shinshuu Soba. Anywhere else in Tokyo? Yude Taro is hard to beat.

Shinshu Soba Shibuya: Shibuya Ku, Dogenzaka 2-6-4

Open weekdays from 7:30~23:15 Sunday and holidays 9:00~22:00 Open 365 days a year!

Gaijin Gourmet Advice for Foreign Gentlemen Living in Japan!

Hello, dear friends. Today is a special edition of Gaijin Gourmet especially designed for you foreign gentlemen living in Japan!

This article isn’t so much about where to eat, but about how to ask your potential date to go out to eat with you!

For many of us foreigners, when speaking Japanese, we have a bit of consternation with hearing and speaking vowels in Japanese.

For examples, “Let’s go out to eat?” and “Let’s go on a trip?” These are, respectively, “Tabe ni ikimashou ka?” (“Let’s go out to eat?” or more properly, “Do you want to go out to eat with me?”) and “Tabi ni ikimashou ka?” (Do you want to go on a trip with me?”)

Get it? “Do you want to go out to eat with me?” is “Tabe ni ikimashou ka?” but, “Do you want to go on a trip with me?” sounds almost exactly the same to the foreign ear; “Tabi ni ikimashou ka?”

“Tabe” is “eat.” “Tabi” is “trip.”

So, foreign guys living in Japan, we must be very careful with our pronunciation with this phrases.

If we are not careful to enuciate correctly, it sounds like we might be saying (to a girl or guy, your choice) “Let’s go on a trip” instead of “Let’s go out to eat.”

Seriously, long ago, I would call some girl and say to her, “Tabe ni iku?” (Thinking, “Let’s go drink beer and eat Yakitori.”)… But my pronunciation was bad, so it sounded like I said, “Tabi ni iku?” (“Let’s go on a trip!”)

She’d say, “OK. I’ll be over in an hour or so after I take a shower and get ready.”

I’d think, “What the hell??? We’re just going to eat Yakitori!….Why do you have to take a shower and get ready?”

Then, an hour and a half later (with me starving and dying for a drink) she’d show up at my door with a small suitcase and a bag and, looking confused, I’d say,

“Hey, why do you have a suitcase? You going somewhere?”

Sometimes, it seemed like those girls were mad at me or in a bad mood after that. I could never figure out why.

That’s a true story and I think it happened 3 or 4 times like that until one of my good friends (a guy) said I had to be careful with “Tabe” (eat) and “Tabi” (trip)….. (I was wondering why he showed up at my door with a suitcase! Yikes!)

Here, all this time I was asking these girls to go eat chicken on sticks and drink booze with me, but they were thinking we were going to some ritzy hotel for candle light dinner and, who knows, a marriage proposal?

I guess you might call this a, “PROBLEM IN COMMUNICATION.”

Anyway, if you ask a girl to go eat a bite and drink with you and she shows up at the door with a small suitcase, you’ll know either:

a) Your pronunciation needs serious work. or;

b) You have a new girlfriend.

That’s me, the Gaijin Gourmet, Mike Rogers, signing off!

Gaijin Gourmet: The Best Steak Deal in All of Tokyo? Aussie Beef Steak for ¥790 at Big Boy Restaurants

I have found the best steak deal in Japan. It’s at Big Boy Restaurants (Where they also have the most inexpensive salad bar in town – See: The Gaijin Gourmet: The Best Salad Bar Deal in Tokyo at Big Boy – My Favorite Rock N Roll Diner!! robot55.jp/blog/the-gaijin-gourmet-the-best-salad-bar-deal-in-tokyo-at-big-boy-my-favorite-rock-n-roll-diner/).

The steak is a 120 gram Aussie beef steak that comes with potatoes, corn and string beans. You also have your choice of 4 different sauces. My son always goes for the butter and garlic. The entire set goes for only ¥790! At ¥120 yen to the US Dollar, ¥790 works out to be about $6.58 for a delicious steak!… And, in Japan, there’s no tipping either! Wow!

(¥790 for one 120 gram steak. ¥1390 for two of them. The prices in the red box are for the steaks with the salad and soup and drink bar. Incredibly inexpensive!)

I think that’s much cheaper than even in the USA.

How do they do this great food at such a low price?

Delivered sizzling hot to your table

My son just loves this steak!

High quality cuts too. Not fatty. No gristle.

Can’t find a better steak deal in Japan!

My son loves that steak deal (Mom and dad will love the price!) Unbelievable deal! The rest of the menu is also filled with incredible deals; especially at lunch time… Oh, and the parking is free!!!

When folks from the west come to Japan, and if they are watching their budget, then Big Boy cannot be beat. 5 out of 5 stars for quality, cleanliness and price.

Check it out at Big Boy!

Gaijin Gourmet – Best Soba Chain in Tokyo?Yude Taro and ¥220 Draft Beer?!

Time once again for Gaijin Gourmet. Today’s episode is the definitive episode for people on a budget in Tokyo who want to eat healthy and safe food and love noodles – and draft beer for super cheap (read on!)

Today’s post is about what I think is the best soba restaurant chain in Tokyo. It is a Soba restaurant chain that is all over Tokyo and, in my expert opinion, blows away the competition when it comes to price, quality, taste and cleanliness; Yude Taro (ゆで太郎). Yude Taro has, hands down, the best inexpensive and delicious noodles.

There are other chains that have a similar menu as Yude Taro and might be ¥10 ~ ¥30 cheaper ($0.10 ~ $0.30 USD) per dish, but they can’t touch the taste and food quality. Here I am specifically talking about the big soba chains in Tokyo: Fuji Soba and Yoshi Soba, etc., .. Folks, Yude Taro beats them all hands down.

Here is the Yude Taro near Yoyogi station that I go to often. But, you can just look for this blue logo:

ゆで太郎ロゴ Yude Taro logo

Yude Taro logo

What does “Yude Taro” mean? Well, Taro is the most common boy’s name in Japan. “Yude” means “boiled.” So, “Yude Taro” means something like “Boiled John” or David or Mike….

Here’s their menu that I screen captured from their webpage:

Yude Taro menu

As you can see, most bowls of soba items on the menu are under ¥500 (about $4 USD). If you want a little more, the highest priced set on the entire menu is a fried pork cutlet on rice along with a bowl of soba (top left hand corner photo) at ¥650 (about $5.42 USD). Really, I’ve eaten 1000 times at these stand up soba shops over these last three decades. Yude Taro is the best.

And you can’t read the menu? It doesn’t really matter as you can see the pictures on the meal ticket machine at every shop.

There’s tens of thousands of these stand-up soba shops in Tokyo. They all have a glass case in front showing the main menu; but just look for the one with the blue logo. Usually, these places are in front of the big train stations and you can find a few competing chains right by each other.

Inside of Yude Taro

Inside of Yude Taro

The Yude Taro I go to has a very large eating area and even seating enough for about 14 people. Don’t even bother going there between 12 noon to 1:00 pm or so. This particular Yude Taro can seat 14, but during the lunch time rush, I’ve been in there when there were more than 25 people eating and another 20 people standing in line. It’s OK, though, because most of the time, you can be in and out of a Yude Taro in 10 minutes so it’s a great deal for the person on the go and on a budget.

Clean Kitchen at Yude Taro

Clean Kitchen at Yude Taro

The noodles are best at all the chains here at Yude Taro because they make the noodles on the premises and then boil. Most of the other chains open a plastic pack with noodles and heat them up. As you know, there’s no way a packaged refrigerated item can beat the taste of a freshly cooked one.

Yude taro soba and egg

This is medium sized soba with a softly boiled egg. ¥470 (about $3.91)… And, as you know, this is Japan so there is no tipping.

Yude Taro soba tenpura

I eat the medium soba, ¥420 (about $3.50) with the fried veggies ¥100 (about $0.83) and grated radish ¥100 (about $0.83). I get a full stomach and the total damages are about 15 minutes at lunch and about $5.16 (USD). What a GREAT deal!

BUT WAIT! WHAT’S THIS???? DRAFT BEER FOR ¥220!???? That’s right! Yude Taro is running a summer 2015 campaign and is offering draft Sapporo Black Label draft beer for  ¥220 (about $1.83 USD) a glass? That’s cheaper per drink than buying a can of beer at the convenience store! AMAZING.

Most cheaper drinking establishments charge twice that price for a draft beer!

¥220 Yen beer campaign over summer!? Wow!

¥220 Yen beer campaign over summer!? Wow!

Yude Taro wins the soba wars. Just look for the blue logo I have shown at the top of this article. Yude Taro is so good that I can honestly say that, if I really had to, I could eat there three meals a days. It’s that good.

Gaijin Gourmet: Soba Wars At Hanzomon Station in Tokyo

(Photo above: Danny from the world famous Japanese band, the 50 Kaitenz, unknowingly posing with me – Mike Rogers – for the Gaijin Gourmet at Hamazushi!)

Looking for the best places to eat and dine in Tokyo and Japan before the upcoming Tokyo Olympics? Welcome to the Original Gaijin Gourmet!

Long, long ago in a land far away, Soba was made sometime during the Tokugawa period.

The ancient scrolls of the Wikipedities say:

Soba is the Japanese name for buckwheat. It is synonymous with a type of thin noodle made from buckwheat flour, and in Japan can refer to any thin noodle (unlike thick wheat noodles, known as udon). Soba noodles are served either chilled with a dipping sauce, or in hot broth as a noodle soup.

It takes three months for buckwheat to be ready for harvest, so it can be harvested four times a year, mainly in spring, summer, and autumn. In Japan, buckwheat is produced mainly in Hokkaido. Soba that is made with newly harvested buckwheat is called “shin-soba”. It is sweeter and more flavorful than regular soba.

In Japan, soba noodles are served in a variety of settings: they are a popular inexpensive fast food at train stations throughout Japan, but are also served by expensive specialty restaurants. Markets sell dried noodles and men-tsuyu, or instant noodle broth, to make home preparation easy. Some establishments, especially cheaper and more casual ones, may serve both soba and udon as they are often served in a similar manner.

Soba is the traditional noodle of choice for Tokyoites.

Yude Taro is my favorite Soba place in all of Tokyo. This restaurant is very inexpensive and the quality and taste of the food is unbeatable!

In many places in Tokyo the Soba Wars are in full swing. Let me introduce you to what I think are the major players at Hanzomon on the Hanzomon Line. Leave the station at exit 5 to find both of these battling warriors within sixty-seconds walk from each other.
The first one is Yude-Taro. Just across the street from exit 5 as you walk out the station. In my opinion, Yude- Taro is the Empire of the Soba Shops; it is cheap, delicious and clean; the others pale in comparison.

Yude Taro is spacious, extremely clean and has seating enough for you and a entire troop of Imperial Storm Troopers.

They have both seating as well as standing room. Don’t bother going there right at 12 pm until 1 pm on a workday, the place will be packed!

As you can see the kitchen is extremely clean.

Buy your food tickets from the machines outside. The staff who handle your food never touch money.

The trump card for Yude Taro is that the soba noodles are made on the premises. This place is cheap but just as delicious as a shop that costs twice the price. I have also read that a man who is considered an expert on Soba said in an interview that he thought Yude Taro was the “Best Soba in Japan.”

Large Zaru soba (¥320) with Wakame (seaweed) total is ¥390. That’s about $4.70

Wide menu that even includes curry rice and, of course, fried foods.

That’s the boss of this branch of Yude Taro in front of a spotless kitchen and freshly fried veggies and fish.

….. And now, to the rebel base!

The next place that isn’t quite as tasty (in my opinion) as Yude Taro is Komoro Soba (about a 45 second walk around the corner). BUT! Komoro Soba is cheaper by about ¥30 ($.50) a plate for the soba. If you are on a budget, then maybe Komoro Soba is for you. The exact same menu of Large Zaru soba with Wakame (seaweed) is ¥390 at Yude Taro (about $4.70) but at Komoro Soba it is ¥310 (about $3.90)… Now, if you are a cheap skate bastard like me, that makes a difference – ESPECIALLY when you are eating this healthy and wholesome food everyday for a week or a month!

Komoro Soba

To go to Komoro Soba, you need to walk out of the station and turn left (and left again at the corner) instead of walking across the street to Yude Taro)

The soba alone is ¥290 at Komoro Soba (about $3.68) while it is ¥360 (about $4.60) at Yude Taro. Yude Taro tastes a bit better (of course, their noodles are made on premises, but it depends on your pocketbook if it is worth it or not. And, unless you’ve eaten soba a lot, you might not be able to tell the difference!)

Komoro Soba is also extremely clean with plenty of seating.

Kitchen is spotless too (I love Japanese restaurants!) Here is a photo of a clone making soba.

As usual, the machines sell the goods and so these are not the droids you are looking for (unless, of course, you want a great meal for a great price!)

Map of the galaxy (Hanzomon)…. Go and seek.

There is no try. There is only do or not do.

Do try these great places to eat. May the force be with you!
