At this week’s #1 is a band from Russia. Of course, it’s Messer Chups! Today is a video made during their summer tour 2018. Finally she’s back! Love you Zombierella! Gee, I wish these guys would come to Japan! Messer Chups’ bio states: “While Messer Chups’ mostly instrumental sound is hard to neatly categorize, it’s safe to say that it would be embraced by fans of rockabilly, horror punk, vintage surf records, Italian slasher films, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Pulp Fiction, lounge music, the theremin, The Cramps, and the theme song from The Munsters. Their catchy music combines surf, vintage Russian melodies, rare film samples from the 50s and 60s, scratchy historical recordings, and lounge loops. From her wartime childhood to geisha apprenticeship to the glory days of a top geisha. This film illustrates the trials of the ultimate Japanese cultural enigma that is – The Life of a Geisha.

“Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock and Roll Ghost Story,” enjoyed its World-Premiere at the Raindance Film Festival in London on Sept. 25, 2017, and was released by a major Japanese motion picture company and in theaters all across Japan.  The DVD and Blu-Ray went on sale all across Japan on June 13, 2018! It also enjoyed its Canadian theatrical release on August 31, 2018!

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). Top 3 Indies Videos 11/03/18! Tommy & The Commies, Brower, Touts, Spam69 (Jpn)!

We’re back once again for this week’s Top 3 videos for Nov. 3, 2018!

First up is a band from Canada who call themselves Tommy & the Commies.

Louder Than War writes: “On their debut album, Tommy and the Commies race from the traps with that spitting punk pop sound first seen on The Buzzcocks’ Spiral Scratch, on The Undertones’ Teenage Kicks. It’s a fine eight-track blast back to two minute wonders that flit in full of harmony and melody over chugging and ringing guitars that drive the songs forcefully and infectiously along.They dive in head first with opener Devices. There’s no clever intro or lead in as they employ that great Orgasm Addict trick of kicking straight off with the vocals. There’s also a definite Jam sound going on as the song flies out with backing vocals tripping over and falling perfectly in the spaces of the lead. It’s a catchy and contagious sound that they continue with throughout the rest of this (too short) album. In fact the only criticism is that there just ain’t enough!” The lead singer looks like he was a member of the Sweet! Cool!

Next up is a band that was introduced to us by Alex Kish of Wassup Rocker Radio (like, just about 15 minutes ago!) This band whose record just came out a couple of days is only available on vinyl (I guess)… But at least we get the cool video that looks like it was pulled outta a 1980s studio! It’s Brower!

Their bio states: “BUZZSAWS is the debut album by BROWER, the solo project of Nat Brower, resident of Ridgewood Queens and erstwhile NANCY and METALLEG compatriot, already championing the spirits and sounds of our most cherished Punk and Rock musical varietals the world over. After last spring’s Little Big EP (DIG007), BROWER is back, and the fire behind that ass is simply inextinguishable! Enter BUZZSAWS – a glam’d-out glitter-bomb of fuzz guitars and giant vocal melodies within the Venn diagram of Bolan, Bowie and Brett (Smiley).”

At #1 are the Touts from Derry in the UK with their newest release! This is the the 4th or 5th time the Touts have graced our countdown! Their bio says about this fine track: “‘Can’t Blame Me’ is about that period when an election is creeping up. The media and politicians start their campaigns of fear mongering, scaring the people, keeping things just the way they like them. It creates unease and everyone falls in line when in fact they should be out demanding a better life, demanding change.”

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of August 11, 2017!

Today, my friends, I have a very special show for you. I guarantee that you are going to see some shit that makes you laugh and some stuff that just totally blows your mind!

First up is a garage punk outfit that’s been around since 1983. Their name is the Cosmic Psychos. Now, generally speaking, I hate it when oldsters stick around and play punk for decades and decades on end after they’ve become senile and forgotten to break up. Why? Well, punk music (in my most probably confused way of thinking) is for snotty young kids (insert Deadboys reference here). I find it “uncomfortable” when fat old guys try to jump around and recapture their youth. (I remember in 1996 when the Sex Pistols came to Japan – they were old and fat – I cringed)… But the Cosmic Psychos? THE COSMIC PSYCHOS???? These guys are fucking Godhead! They’ve done what few others (no one?) else has done before; old guys who capture the angst (in the pants?) of what being a twisted old fucker is like. And, trust me, I know what being a twisted old fucker is like. If there were a Punk Rock league for bands over 55, these guys would be the Crem De La Crappe’! World Champions! Chief Fry Cooks! Store Managers! Kings!

Their Facebook page says: “The Cosmic Psychos are a punk rock band based in Melbourne and rural Victoria in Australia. An underground band that has only ever achieved limited recognition, they were cited as a significant influence on the Seattle grunge scene of 90s.” Shit. At #1 this week is probably my favorite new band of 2017! We introduced them last week, thanks to Alex Kish of Wassup Rocker Radio. Their name is Amyl and The Sniffers. Amyl & the Sniffers consists of Amy Taylor on vocals, Dec Martens on guitar, Bryce Wilson on drums and Fergus Romer on bass. I really like this band and think they are one of the most exciting acts I’ve seen in years! (Amy reminds me of a pissy bitchy chick! Simply perfect for the new queen of punk!

Amyl & the Sniffers’ music gives me the feeling I got when I first heard the Sex Pistols or X-Ray Specs in the late seventies. I can’t think of a better compliment. Check it out and see if you agree!

Spotlight Artist!  Today’s spotlight is a bunch of guys from Tokyo that are out of their fucking minds. Their name is The Spam69 (“69” in Japanese is pronounced as “Rock.” So their name is “Spam Rock.”

This stuff is hilarious too! These guys rock!

The band consists of two main crazies named Jun Spam on guitar and vocals and Yuta Spam (Jumping & screaming like a lunatic). There are some other guys in the band (it’s like a football team) and you can see their names on the Spam69 Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/50kaitenz/

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Oct. 22, 2016!

First up is a Garage Rock And Roll outfit lead a mysterious character known as Bobby “Pantichrist” Butler along with 4 other conspirators who make up an awesome group known as “The Shit.” The Shit hail from Switzerland in a town they refer to as “Bern, Baby, Burn!” This hot track is from their brand new 10 inch record entitled, “Rue du Chocolat.” They are even having a release party tonight… I wonder if I can make it there in time to crash it? Next up is a girls duo from Glasgow, Scotland named Honeyblood. Their newest album, “Babes Never Die,” is due out in the USA next week. I really like this a lot. Today’s #1 is an artist that just toured Japan in August. They hail from Brighton, England. The Guardian writes: “Black Honey are one of the indie bands to watch for 2016. They’ve been under the proverbial radar for over a year and in fact they rather like it that way – “If it was my way we’d still be a secret band,” claims the singer – but unfortunately they made the mistake of writing songs with potential mass (indie) appeal.
