Top 3 Indies Videos 5/07/17! Jungles (Japan), pinksideofthemoon, The Coathangers, Skating Polly!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of May 6, 2017!

First up is Skating Polly. This is their 3rd time (I think) on the countdown. Rodney on the Roq plays them a lot. I think they are often too loud for WTF? on InterFM 897 on Sunday mornings…. But maybe not this particular song! Skating Polly Skating Pollywas formed in Oklahoma in 2009. The band consists of multi-instrumentalists Kelli Mayo  and Peyton Bighorse, who were 9 and 14 years old when the band formed. They are a Riot Grrrrl Indie Pop band. Here’s their Facebook page:

#3) Skating Polly – Louder In Outer Space

At #2 is a pinksideofthemoon…. Legendary producer and engineer Lee Popa and songstress Jolee Popa make up pinksideofthemoon and they hail from Portland, Oregon. Their FB page describes their music as, “Driven by electronic beats and grooving loops pinksideofthemoon mixes live guitars, bass, keyboards and synthesizers and covers them with a smooth coating of silky female vocals with Dub style echo and effects to create the pinksideofthemoon.”

Besides all that, pinksideofthemoon have been getting regular airplay on my weekly radio show, WTF? What the Funday? (Every Sunday 8 am ~ 11 am on InterFM 897) And they will be guests on the show tomorrow, Sunday, May 7, 2017! Here’s their FB page:

#2) pinksideofthemoon “Lost in Space” Remix by John Fryer “Don’t Let the Smile Fool You”

At #1 is a song that just came out yesterday. It’s the Coathangers. These girls are one of my favorite bands over the last year or so and this is at least 5 times that they’ve been on the countdown. They call themselves a “Yes! Wave!” band and they hail from Atlanta, Georgia. Their biography states: “The story goes that four young women decided to start a band for the sole purpose of being able to hang out and play parties. They weren’t going to let the fact that none of them knew how to play any instruments get in the way of their having a good time.”

Ha! I think they are awesome! Here’s their Facebook page:

#1) The Coathangers – Captain’s Dead

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Is a band called “The Jungles.” They used to be called, Red Bacteria Vacuum. Or they still are? Who the hell knows? I heard they were now called, “The Jungles” but I can’t find much on a band with that name – duh! And there is no Facebook page for the Jungles (as far as I can see – If you know one, let me know!) But there is a page for Red Bacteria Vaccum! Anyway, the info is sketchy, but their bio says: “Red Bacteria Vacuum (レッドバクテリアバキューム) is an all-girl Japanese punk band from Osaka formed in 1998 consisting of Ikumi, Kassan, and Jasmine. The band relocated to Tokyo in 2000.”

Here’s their Facebook page:

That’s all for today! See you next week when we return to the Top 3 Indies Artist Videos Countdown. See ya! – Mike in Tokyo Rogers

Top 3 Videos for April 30, 2016! Mitski, Skating Polly, Palaye Royale, Japan’s own Molice!

It’s Top 3 Video time! The best of the Top 3 videos for April 30, 2016!

First up is Skating Polly. Wikipedia says; “Skating Polly is an American rock band formed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 2009. The band consists of multi-instrumentalists Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse, who were 9 and 14 years old when the band formed. The band is noted for its members alternating instruments, childlike yet mature and poetic lyrics, melodic arrangements, rudimentary musicianship and an eclectic array of songs that vary in style from riot grrrl to piano-based indie pop.”

#3) Skating Polly – Pretective Boy

At #2 is a trio from Las Vegas who were introduced to us by genius music curator, Kona Cindy. Thanks Cindy, you are tops!!! She loves this band and they describe themselves as an “Art Rock band.” Their name is Palaye Royale and they have the look and their tunes are great.  Go “Like” their Fb page here:

#2) PALAYE ROYALE – Mr. Doctor Man

At #1 is a song that was introduced to us by an artist named Julie (You can see one of Julie’s videos here). Julie turns us onto an awesome new artist named Mitski who I am told is half-Japanese and was born in Japan but now lives in New York. Her Wikipedia says; “Mitski was born in Japan and grew up surrounded by her mother’s 1970s pop CDs. Her family moved frequently, from Japan to the Democratic Republic of Congo to Malaysia to China to Turkey, among other countries, before coming to New York City. Her music reflects her cross-cultural identity as “half Japanese, half American, but not fully either,” and issues of belonging.” Here is her FB page: Go “Like” it. I think Mitski is going to be a big star!

#1) Mitski – Your Best American Girl

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Today’s spotlight is an artist from Tokyo Japan named Molice. Molice is a rock, alternative indie band formed in January 2007. They formed from the dissolution of two other bands, The Radicales and China Chop. Here’s their FB page. Please go “Like” it.

I hear this video was made in collaboration with fans all over the world who sent in photos from their local river.

Top 3 New Artist Videos (03/25/15) 〜ミュージックビデオも制作

Hey! We’re back for this week’s Top 3 Countdown. Welcome!

First off, a hat tip to my friend in Osaka, Kevin Riley. Kevin was complaining about some of the songs a few weeks ago, saying they were, “Too mellow.” He wanted to, “Rock!” he says.

Damned hippies!

OK. So, this week due to popular demand (from Kevin) we’re going to rock with some more video productions from brand new artists that I think are way cool!

First up today is a band from France. It seems to be a guy and a girl. Their band name is The Limiñanas. That’s all I know about them and all I can find out about them from English language press. Kevin Riley speaks French, maybe he could do some research for us! Seriously, I can’t find really information about this band, really.

Anyway, I did find one thing… This is from a review in the Guardian:

“French pop in its purest form hasn’t really got its groove back since the 60s, but, wisely, it’s this very era that this Perpignan duo mine, marrying fuzzed-out psychedelia and agreeably rambling rock with the pop sweetness of that decade’s chansons. The ghost of Gainsbourg is felt most keenly in Votre côté yéyé m’emmerde, a softly spoken-word litany of icons and celebrities. Not hero worship, though, but an eye roll at the cute-ification of the past; its title translates to something like “your yé-yé view annoys me”, or, more literally, “enshittens me”. It is, in other words, a perfectly Gallic “bof” of a pop song.

Uh? What did he just say? Yeah. See? I can’t find out anything about this band. So check the video and you’ll know about as much as I do!

#3) The Limiñanas – Je Suis Une Go-Go Girl (

Next up is a two girl group from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma that formed in 2009. And their name is Sonic Youth. Er, no! That’s not their name. But if you like Sonic Youth, you are going to dig this! The band consists of Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse, who both can play several instruments. They make songs alternating instruments, in a childlike yet heavy and mature style with very and poetic lyrics and melodic arrangements. Is the rudimentary musicianship part of the act? I can’t tell because some of it really rocks! They play a bunch of different styles from riot grrrl to, get this:  piano-based indie punk/pop.

#2) Skating Polly – Alabama Movies (

OK. Here we are at #1. Now this is HOT! I love this! This trio is from Texas and they are called “Purple!” (OK, Kevin Riley, you will dig this BIG TIME TOO!) In thes video they are playing at a party and I cen definitely imagine rocking out to this band! MY GOD! They have a hot blonde drummer and she is the singer too! When was the last time you saw that happen? Never, right? Her name is Hannah Brewer and she also writes the lyrics. And she growls when she sings! Hot! Hot! Hot! Click this video and watch right now! You can thank me later!

#1) Purple “Wallflower”  (

Well that’s all the videos for this week.

If you want to be in a music video, and you are in Tokyo, we are shooting a video for a hot new girl’s band on Friday, April 3 in Shimokitazawa. Here’s information on that: Want to Be in a Star in a Rock Video? You Can! The New Su凸ko D凹koi Video! ( 凸ko-d凹koi-video/) (Su凸ko D凹koi – すっとこどっこいの音楽ビデオもその日に撮影します!「ブス」のpvに出演しましょう!全員集合!

See you back here in a week from now with more cool new music!
