History Repeats Itself: The “Stars of Silent Films Are Alive” Today (But not well!)

Most will probably find the title of this blog to be a bit curious. But history is repeating itself right now and the “Stars of Silent Films” are “alive” today! Well, maybe not those exact people, but people who follow in their footsteps and fail to learn the lesson that they taught us….

History is truly repeating itself in front of our very eyes in the TV and radio world and the reaction of many TV and radio “stars” – and even broadcasting company management – towards the Internet.

And, just as it was in the 1920s, the silent film stars who were able to survive – and actually make more money, along with the production companies who profited handsomely from “Talkies” – the stars who survive and prosper will be the ones who embrace the new technology and use it to their advantage.

The ones who do not, will fade away. (It’s actually curious to think, that after all this time, there are mass media talent and company management who refuse to consider the internet as a profitable promotional tool or revenue stream, but I know a few… I understand if they are over 60-years-old. But under 60? I don’t “get it.” This seems like complete denial of reality.)

Silent films were big entertainment from about 1910 (“Birth of a Nation” in 1913 was the biggest grossing silent film of all time) until the beginning of the end in 1927 with Al Jolson’s “Jazz Singer” and the abrupt ending of all Silent Films by 1937.

So, from the advent of “Talkies,” until the death of the Silent Movie Star, was only a few decades – or even less than 20 years, depending upon how you look at it.

When Talkies first arrived, many of the world’s biggest stars refused to accept it. Even the great Charles Chaplin said of Talkies, “Talkies are spoiling the oldest art in the world— the art of pantomime. They are ruining the great beauty of silence. They are defeating the meaning of the screen.”

Yet, even Charles Chaplin could not deny progress and he stayed silent no longer. Just six days after Britain declared war on Germany, in 1939, he started work on “The Great Dictator”. It would be a stroke of genius – as well as the acceptance of the inevitable – that helped solidify Chaplin’s place as one of the greatest film makers of all time and a worldwide superstar – even to this day.

Many stars, though, simply refused to embrace the new technology and they faded away.

It is said that many of the silent film stars insisted that their fame and talent was good enough and that their audience were loyal enough that they would never abandon them because they ‘could speak with their eyes, therefore they didn’t need sound or Talkies.’

In hindsight, anyone can see that this sort of thinking is foolish.

I wonder why some of today’s radio and TV stars refuse to do the Internet… I know a few who refuse to even do simple ones like Facebook or Twitter! I can understand not having the confidence in writing ability to not do a blog (how about taking, photos?) but not using FB or Twitter to keep your name in front of the audience and potential sponsors, is basically the same as “shooting yourself in the foot.”

Many of the old silent film stars obstinately refused the Talkies for the very same illogical, self-defeating and completely impractical reasons.

I can’t blame them for being artists, but I can blame them for being stupid.

They faded away, right?

After long avoidance, some finally did try, but found they didn’t have the voice to match the face…

What should we call a TV or radio star today who refuses to participate in the internet besides “someone in denial”?

From Forbes (April 10, 2014):

“Perhaps the iconic pose of our era is someone squinting at a smartphone screen–replacing another iconic pose, the couch potato pointing a remote at the TV screen. That stark change is apparent in a new report that says for the first time, Internet ad revenues have passed those of broadcast TV.”

From a guy who has worked in the mass media for over 30 years, I can tell you for a fact that, even though many won’t say it, many of today’s TV and radio “talent” and broadcasting station management think the exact same thing about the Internet: They foolishly believe they don’t need it and they refuse to participate in it; as if it is “below” them… Just as the Silent Stars once did

They think TV and radio are going to survive in their current form for the next twenty years and giving them a livelihood; just like the Silent Stars believed about the Silent Film industry.

Starting to see a connection here? I do. And this is why I state that “History is repeating itself right in front of our eyes.”

Here’s a list of 10 former Silent Film superstars who didn’t make it through the transition to Talkies for various reasons.

The World Wide Web began in 1990 and now has mass acceptance. It’s been 25 years now. Talkies destroyed Silent Films completely in about 25 years or so.

How many of us can see the writing on the wall?

It figures that if you do not do the internet (Facebook, blogging, Twitter, Instagram), you’ll be out of a job within 2 ~ 5 years.

So, TV and radio star, ignore the internet at your own peril…

They can predict the future by following the examples shown perfectly by the Silent Film stars who proceeded them: some adapted; some didn’t.

Data on Young People in Japan Show Extremely Difficult Times Coming for Old Media

The title of this post is misleading. It says, “Data on Young People in Japan Show Extremely Difficult Times Coming for Old Media.” That’s wrong; those hard times are already here. Have been for a while. It’s not going to get better, either.

I’ve written before about how the Digital Age would destroy TV. Today I met the president of one of the (if not the) largest internet companies in Japan, and he quite-as-a-matter-of-fact said, “TV and radio have no future.”

The data isn’t good for old media. When people under 25 don’t care about you, barring some sort of miracle, you don’t have a good future.

It’s that simple.

The data is shocking: young Japanese people today have a smart phone or iPad, PC or whatever in their bedrooms. But they don’t have a TV or radio in that same room.

I was shown data at another company that makes content for TV as well as other online platforms; they have seen the writing on the wall and are moving into digital rights management and programming for the internet. The survey I was shown was of people 13 to under 29 and it showed that only 11% had a TV in their bedroom; 6% had a radio (those must all be people over 25). But over 97% had a smart device or PC.

The Japanese youth market obsession with smart devices has even hurt automobile sales in Japan as the Wall Street Journal reports: “Reasons [for the drop in sales of automobiles] include higher gasoline prices and Japan’s graying population. But even more worrying to auto makers are signs that the downturn is part of a deeper generational shift among young Japanese consumers. Unlike their parents’ generation, which viewed cars as the passport to freedom and higher social status, the Internet-connected Japanese youths today look to cars with indifference, according to market research by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association and Nissan. Having grown up with the Internet, they no longer depend on a car for shopping, entertainment and socializing and prefer to spend their money in other ways.”

Give you one guess which devices occupies the vast majority of these people’s free time? Cars or smart devices? Oh, and by the way, one of the places that people most commonly listen to the FM radio is in cars… But young people are not buying those? Double Whammy!

Now you know why Japan’s Niconico Douga gets 5 million viewers for some shows and young people do not watch TV or listen to the radio anymore… The smart device is under their pillow or in their hands all the time.

Do you remember the Ramones song, “Rock N Roll Radio”? I remember it well. The lyrics went like this:

“Do you remember lying in bed, with the covers up over your head, the radio playing so no one can see?”

In 10 years, it’s going to say, “Do you remember lying in bed, with the covers up over your head, Smart Phone playing so no one can see?”

By they way, Niconico Douga is the #8 most popular internet page in Japan, above both Twitter and Facebook… Facebook is #9 and Twitter has dropped in these last few weeks to #11.

Tech site, The Bridge writes: “Niconico Douga quietly first emerged back in December of 2006… Since then, the site has offered many unique features to its users, successfully accumulating over 30 million users as of 2012. That averages out to a whopping 440,000 new users per month. The user demographic is mostly male (with 67% men and 33% women) and most of the active users are in the 20-29 age range (about 42%). There have been over 8.7 million videos uploaded to the site in total.

In general, the site is sort of perceived as a place for otaku who typically prefer anonymous communication. However since the launch of live streaming videos, people in the mainstream have also joined the site, including but not limited to politicians, idol groups, and music bands. Currently there are almost 100 official channels that live stream content on the site. What’s interesting is that Niconico Douga allows users to sign up using Facebook credentials, and that of course requires your real name. This may have been influenced by Ustream, which uses Twitter and Facebook for sign-in.”

Wikipedia states: “As of October 31, 2011, Niconico has over 23,690,000 registered users, 6,870,000 mobile users and 1,390,000 premium users.”

This isn’t really rocket science, folks. These facts and data do not bode well for TV or FM radio at all.

Did you also know that all smart phones have a FM radio chip built in on them but the makers do not turn it on because they have determined that there is not enough demand for FM radio? Did you know that all Japanese car manufacturers stopped putting FM radios in car as a standard item in 2010?

The writing is on the wall for FM radio. TV will take longer to collapse as Japan has an aging society and those folks watch TV.

So, TV will survive much longer, but it still has a demographic that is not good for future growth. In Japan, the elderly have surpassed the younger age group since 1997.”

Jeez! Rock and Roll Radio by the Ramones came out in 1980? That’s 35 years ago!!!??? Maybe Rock and Roll never ends, but Rock N Roll FM radio doesn’t look like it can make it.

————————

Finally, this isn’t just a trend in Japan, it’s worldwide and occurring in so-called “wealthy nations.” Here’s information from the New York Times: “Over the last 10 years, the average share of Americans listening to radio at any given time has shrunk about 14 percent, or 2.3 percentage points. Teenagers account for a well-recognized chunk of that decline. But Larry Rosin, a radio consultant with Edison Media Research in Somerville, N.J., points out that college graduates are also far less likely to listen to radio than nongraduates, a gap that has widened with time.”

What conclusion can we come to with this information in hand?

The Old Mass Media Heading Out the Door?

The old guard media are on the way out and there’s no way to stop it.

Yesterday, I had a meeting with the president of one of Japan’s leading internet companies. They run the biggest and most popular blogging portal in Japan as well as many other internet related business and internet media broadcasting. Their business is exploding.

In our short meeting yesterday, we discussed television and radio. He had a few words. He said very directly, “They have no future at all.”

In these past few weeks, I’ve been working with some other people who are very much in touch with internet broadcasting as well as experienced in traditional media. Here’s some information that I gathered that I’d like to share with you:

Did you know that nearly all smart phones have FM radio built in to them but the makers do not turn it on because they have determined that there is not enough demand for it?

Did you know that all Japanese car manufacturers stopped putting FM radios in cars as a standard item in 2010?It’s now an option; you have to pay for it if you want it.

Did you know that there is not a single company in Japan that manufactures FM radios anymore?

According to a recent survey of Japanese young people by one of Japan’s largest publishing companies, people between the ages of 13 to 30 showed that only 11% had a TV in their bedroom. Less than 7% had a radio.

But over 98% of those people in that demographic had a smart device or PC in their bedrooms.

Now you know how and why some Japanese internet video sites can get 5 million viewers for some shows. The vast majority of young people do not watch TV or listen to the radio on any sort of a regular basis…

By they way, Niconico Douga (Japan’s version of Youtube) is the #8 most popular internet page in Japan, above both Twitter and Facebook…

And yesterday, this:

Norway to Become First Country to Switch Off FM Radio in 2017 www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/norway-first-country-end-fm-790131

In what will likely be the opening move in a global transition to digital radio, Norway has announced it will shut down its FM band.

Norway will start turning off FM radio on Jan. 11, 2017, and plans to stop transmission of the last FM signal to the country’s northernmost regions by Dec. 13 of that year. The announcement, made by their Ministry of Culture, makes Norway the first country to do away entirely with FM radio. The move is intended to save money and allow a full transition to digital radio, which Norway argues will give listeners “access to more diverse and pluralistic radio content and enjoy better sound quality and new functionality.”

In its statement, the Norwegian government said the cost of transmitting national radio channels through the FM network is eight times higher than via the Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system, the standard digital radio technology used across Europe.

Wow! A digital radio station can be operated at 1/8th the cost of a traditional FM station?

The writing is on the wall for FM radio. It has been a wonderful partner and part of my life.

I love FM radio. I hate to see what is happening. But progress shall not be stopped.
