Top 3 Indies Artist Videos! Mar. 17, 2018: Baby Shakes, Mary’s Kid’s, Amyl & the Sniffers, Darky Dark & the Junkie Bunch!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for Mar. 17, 2018! Today I have a bunch of new punk bands. Starting off the countdown today is a band introduced to us by Alex over at Wassup Rocker Radio (Here’s their Twitter account: https://twitter.com/WassupRckrRadio). The band’s name is Mary’s Kids and they are a punk band from Stockholm, Sweden. Their bio states they are influenced by: “DEAD MOON, DEAD BOYS, MINOR THREAT, BLACK FLAG, RAMONES, ALL…” So that’s pretty good, I think.

At #3 is a band from Orange County near Los Angeles. Their name is Darky Dark and the Junkie Bunch. This is some heavy shit. Shocking, really. I haven’t heard/see anything this shocking since The Dead Kennedys or Fear.

At #2 is my fave new band of the last year or so. From Australia, Amyl & the Sniffers. Amyl got their name because the lead singer’s name is Amy Louise. They are about to make some huge announcements. If you get a chance to see these guys live, Go! They are going to be big!  This is their latest single called, “Cup of Destiny” which just came out!

At #1 this week are no strangers to the countdown, they are my favorite band from New York! They are The Baby Shakes! Their Bio says, “Baby Shakes are a rock n’ roll-punk band from New York City. Mary on lead vocals and guitar, Judy on lead guitar and vocals, Claudia on bass and vocals, and Ryan on drums. With catchy melodic vocals over dirty guitars and a killer rhythm section, their influences range from The Ramones and Slade to Chuck Berry and 60’s Motown girl groups.“

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for Feb 24, 2018! And starting off the countdown today are Amyl & the Sniffers. They were featured on last week’s countdown (“She’s Not a Loser” http://bit.ly/2sEZBuA) and they had the #2 song for the entire year in 2017 (“70s Street Munchies“) in Top 50 Best Songs of 2017 (Music Videos!) http://bit.ly/2BROuCv

At #2 is my new fave new group for 2018 (I found Amyl and the Sniffers in 2017!) and their name is the Reckless Drifters and they are from Los Angeles. The Reckless Drifters are Dramarama’s John Easdale & Mark Englert, The Woolly Bandits’ Christa Collins, Miss Derringer’s Sylvain De Muizon, & original Social Distortion drummer Derek O’Brien. This os their debut single and it is a cover of an old Hank Williams tune (Yeah. You read that right, Hank Williams.) My dad loved Hank Williams and when I first heard this rendition it dropped my jaw…. It takes some real special talent to cover a Hank Williams classic and actually make it original and, dare I say it? Better than the original!

At #1 this week are the Baby Shakes! The Baby Shakes just finished a bunch of shows in Florida where they played with my friends from my old hometown, Mel Bergman and the Phantom Surfers! So to commemorate that event and because it was guitarist Judy’s birthday the other day (well, not the ‘other day,’ more like 4 months ago) here they are at #1…. This also gets to #1 this week as Shuichi Masaki from Fukuoka’s awesome Garage Band, Titty Twister randomly put this video up as his recommendation last night. I was shocked and told him, “Hey! Shuichi san! Ken Nishikawa and I made that Baby Shakes video!”

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST!  Today’s spotlight artists are the mighty 50 Kaitenz from Osaka, Japan! The 50 Kaitenz just released their new album and I have been playing some of their new songs on my FM radio show just about every week! Top 3 Indies Videos 5/21/17! Moja (Japan), Baby Shakes, Sloan Peterson, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of May 21, 2017!

Once again, today’s line up is awesome (if I must say so myself!) First up is a new artist from Brisbane, Australia named Sloan Peterson. Her bio says, “Sloan Peterson; a love child of 50’s guitar pop and modern garage rock, bursting with a warmth that’s inseparable from her private identity. Influenced by everything from Elvis, to Latin legend Xavier Cugat or the fashion statements of Nancy Sinatra and Bowie – Sloan Peterson is the sum of these influences that adds up to so much more.
Her debut EP is in progress.” Today’s number is her debut single.

At #2 is Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas who hail from Detroit, Michigan. In 2014, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas released their debut “Secret Evil” and spent two years on the road; countless headline gigs, supports with such like-minded acts as Gogol Bordello, Social Distortion and St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and well-received sets at festivals like Lollapalooza, ACL Music Festival, Osheaga, and Bonnaroo. Long hailed as an explosive and theatrical live outfit, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas will celebrate the release of they new album, “Telephone // Telefono” (On Sale June 23, 2017) with a non-stop North American tour. They’ll debut in Japan on my nationally broadcast FM radio show, “WTF?” on InterFM897 tomorrow, Sunday, May 21, 2017.

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Today’s feature are a kickass duo from Tokyo named Moja who are going to appear at the Chester Live 2017 festival in the UK this year! Wow! Moja’s bio says, “What’s Moja sound like??? It’s thundering, passionate, high-speed Dance Music of the kind you’ve which never experienced before. Everyone dances like mad at our shows. And we love to share that space and experience with the audience. We’ve performed in many places such as Tokyo, Toronto, Quebec, New York, London, Liverpool, Hong Kong, Italy, and more…” I’ve seen Moja live several times before. It is difficult to describe their live shows… I haven’t seen anything like it since Iggy Pop. This video captures the live atmosphere of the band about as best as I think possible – which is impossible. This video was given rave reviews by the drummer of the Libertines.

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Mar.4, 2017! And, once again, it’s Ladies Night! All Girl bands or female fronted bands!

First up is Hands Off Gretel. They are a 4-piece alternative rock band, formed late 2014 in South Yorkshire, UK. This is their second time gracing our countdown. Their Facebook page says, “The sound we make is raw, influenced strongly by 90s female fronted grunge bands, we get loud and shouty and soft and pretty, it’s frustration music from a girl in her room shouting out at the real world. ” (https://www.facebook.com/handsoffgretel/)

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! A few days ago, I posted on my own blog, Japanese Girl Rock Bands That Matter in 2017 (modernmarketingjapan.blogspot.jp/2017/03/12-japanese-girl-rock-bands-that-matter.html) After I did make that post, several good folks complained that I didn’t include, TsuShiMaMire. OK. I deliberately did not add TsuShiMaMire for two reasons; I was told by their label that one of the original members quit the band a few months or so ago (the drummer) and, I also heard from someone else, there were rumors of a breakup. I also heard that their new drummer is a guy… Not sure if he is just temporary or what they are planning.… So, since that was an “All girls bands” list, I didn’t include them.

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). Has produced a few smash hit programs and several of Japan’s highest rated and most famous radio programs. A recent hit program was “The TV Show” (Set Program with “Ninja Slayer”) which, between April – Oct. 2015, garnered over 10 million viewers.  He is currently producing and hosting “WTF?” the hugely popular Sunday live show on InterFM 89.7 as well as Rakuten Superrr Radio’s  Power Morning everyday Mon. ~ Fri. 6 am ~ 10 am. As well as Rakuten Superrr Radio’s Power Evening Mon. ~ Fri. 5 pm ~ 8 pm. Welcome back to the Top 3 Video countdown. The Top 3 Indies Artists Videos for the week of Feb. 27, 2016!

First up of a band that was introduced to us by the queen of the beautiful party girls in Los Angeles, Asia Muka (I hope she doesn’t get mad at me for saying that… It’s just my impression!) Next up are three girls who debuted on our countdown just last week! The Baby Shakes! I love them! I’ve been playing them on our radio show too and Kona Cindy arranged for the girl’s to be on Rodney on the Roq’s show last week. Rodney says the baby Shakes are the “Female Ramones!” I think they are like a cross between the Bangles and the Ramones… (So, I mean, they remind me of the “Bangs” – which is what the Bangles were called when they first got together. At #1 is a band fromPhoenix, Arizona, the Love Me Nots. I have been playing this band on my radio show for a few years now and I’m happy to be introducing them to you here.  They describe themselves as “fuzz-and-farfisa, rocknroll!” This band rocks! I love it!

Spotlight Artist! Every week on the countdown I try to add a bonus track and introduce something special. Usually, I strive to show you good folks some great Japanese underground bands. Today, we go to the vaults for a three girl and one guy band from Kyoto named “The Soap.” I am a big fan of this group. The video was made by Ken Nishikawa and me. (Ken did all the hard work – I slept on the sofa during editing!)

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Video countdown. The Top 3 Indies Artists Videos for the week of Feb. 21, 2016! I think you’ll really enjoy today’s countdown as the videos are all pretty cool or even hilarious!

First up is SWMRS. SWMRS  (pronounced as “Swimmers”) is a punk rock outfit from Oakland, California. They formed in 2004. They draw on a mix of influences ranging from the Beach Boys to the Ramones to create their own brand of rock and roll. This song is hilarious! I never thought that Miley Cyrus was punk rock, but, well, I guess she is.

At #2 is Wavves, another band from California! This is their 3rd appearance on our countdown!

The next band up is from New York and I think they are one of the most exciting new finds in sometime. Their name is “Baby Shakes” and they just finished touring Japan. I found out about them because my friends in Osaka said that they were Fab! I describe them as “the Ramones meet the Bangles.” This band is going to be huge!
