Top 3 Indies Videos 6/23/18! Primetime, Asylums, The Blinders, The Stephanies!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for June 23, 2018! First up is a girls band from London named Primetime. Primetime were introduced to us by the legendary UK DJ, Mick Fletcher of the fab “Just Some Punk Songs” blog (One of, if not thee ‘Go to’ blogs for new punk music). Mick turns us onto two bands today: Primetime and our #1 song this week: The Blinders. But first, Primetime. Mick blogged about Primetime over two years ago (See? What are you doing here? Go read Mick’s blog!) Mick compares Primetime to Delta 5! “Almost 2 years to the day I posted a song from Primetime’s debut ep, telling you that they were a 4 piece post punk all female band from London and I made rather obvious comparisons with Delta 5.”

At #2 is a band called, Asylums. Their bio says: “Originally described as “Blur if they were raised in Seattle” or “ the excitement you felt when you first heard Buzzcocks or Manics”, the development of Asylums has taken them into the same epic sonic space as Foals or Arctic Monkeys – a combination of anger and experimentalism, of whispered secrets and musical mood swings.”

At #1 is another gem found for us by Mick Fletcher of Just Some Punk Songs! They are the Blinders from Doncaster in the U.K. Their bio says they are influenced by: “Dylan, Cohen, Lennon, Cave, E-smith, Kerouac, Rimbaud, Orwell, Ginsberg, S.Borroughs, Manson & The Devil.”

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST!  Today’s spotlight goes to a Japanese girls band that I saw live last night and they were awesome and wowed a packed house in Shinjuku. The band is a “Girls Three piece band” and they call themselves, “The Stephanies.” They headlined a fab show last night that also featured two of my other fave Japanese girls bands, “The Pats Pats” and “su凸ko d凹koi ” (Just say “Su Ko D Koi”). I’m going to air all three of these (my fave Japanese girls bands) on the FM radio Japan tomorrow morning on my radio show in Japan, The Mike Rogers Show every Sunday morning… (Mike Rogers Show – every Sunday from 5 am ~ 7 am. You can listen live on InterFM 897 in Tokyo, Radio Neo 79.5 in Nagoya or nationally broadcast (and On-Demand) on radiko.jp).

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for June 16, 2018! First up is a Swedish Garage Punk band from Stockholm named The Scrags. Their new album ‘Anything’ just came out. This demands to be played loud.

At number two is a band from Seattle, Washington and they are called, La Luz. La Luz call their sound “Surf, Doo Wop” and I think it’s fab. It reminds me of music that you’d hear in a David Lynch movie so that’s fine by me!  They are currently touring with Summer Twins (I wish I could go see one of those shows!)

At #1 this week is a band that was introduced to us by the legendary DJ/Blogger extraordinaire, Mick Fletcher of “Just Some Punk Songs.” and the band’s name is the “Down and Outs.”  The Down and Outs are a straight-ahead punk unit from Liverpool. James’ new band is called, “James Williamson & the Pink Hearts” and their album, “Behind the Shade” will be out June 22.

Wilko Johnson’s brand new album ‘Blow Your Mind’ has been announced! This is Wilko’s first album of new material in 30 years and the follow up to the incredible ‘Going Back Home’.  The man himself said, ‘It’s the album I never thought I’d get to write!” Here’s the lead-off single for that album.

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for May 26, 2018! And it’s Ladies Night! Starting off the countdown are my new favorite band that were introduced to us by DJ Kish of the world famous Wassup Rocker Radio and they are a band from Brooklyn, New York and their name is Surfbort. The say their music is “Freak Music” and the “Don’T believe in Google.” (I get the pun!!!!) This band rocks! If they’d remember to send me their tracks, I’d play them on my radio show in Japan, The Mike Rogers Show every Sunday morning… (Mike Rogers Show – every Sunday from 5 am ~ 7 am. You can listen live on InterFM 897 in Tokyo, Radio Neo 79.5 in Nagoya or nationally broadcast (and On-Demand) on radiko.jp).

At this week’s #2 is a band we haven’t seen on the countdown for a while, it’s Daisy House. The Daisy House bio says, “Daisy House was formed in December of 2012. The Southern California folk-rock band consists of Doug Hammond on guitar, bass, vocals and keys, and Doug’s daughter Tatiana Hammond on vocals. “Bon Voyage” is their 5th album to date.”

I WILL play this on my radio show tomorrow morning.

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST!  Today’s spotlight goes to a Japanese band from Hokkaido that was introduced to us by Japanese music critic and musicologist (and cool guy) Masao Nakagami. The Band’s name is Rangsteen.  Rangsteen has their next album, entitled, “Idiot Elegy” coming out on sale July 18, 2018!

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.)
