It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown! This week is a special! Today we have my recent fave three Indies bands and Japanese pick for the week of Dec. 7, 2017!

First up are three guys from Boston on the Slovenly label named The Monsieurs. The Monsieurs were introduced to us by the curator for the stars, Rin Ishioka.

Vanyaland magazine says: “Ask anyone who knows their shit about Boston rock and roll will tell you that garage-punk lords The Monsieurs are one of the best — if not the best — live bands around town.”

At this week’s #1 is a band that I debuted on Japanese FM radio a LONG time ago! (Pat myself on the back) and has been aired on my radio show and this countdown many many times. They are Starcrawler from Los Angeles! Their bio says, “We will kill you.” So what more could you ask?

Spotlight Artist! Today’s spotlight artists are the mighty 50 Kaitenz from Osaka, Japan! About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). Has produced a few smash hit programs (some real losers, too!) and several of Tokyo’s highest rated and most famous radio programs. A recent hit program was “The TV Show” (Set Program with “Ninja Slayer”) which, between April – Oct. 2015, garnered over 10 million viewers. He is currently producing and hosting “The Mike Rogers Show” every Sunday live on InterFM 89.7 in Tokyo and Radio Neo in Nagoya 79.5 and nationally broadcast on Radiko.jp (Internet radio). And his life’s dream is his just completed full-length motion picture, “Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock and Roll Ghost Story”which will be released by a major Japanese motion picture company and in theaters all across Japan in Autumn 2017.

Top 3 Indies Videos 12/01/17 – Five Fab Japanese Indies and Garage Bands!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown! This week s a special! Today we have five of my recent fave Japanese Indies bands for the week of Dec. 1, 2017! These are five groups that I think could do alright in the west. First up are a group of four fab psychos doing the trash garage thingy like a boss! They are from Tokyo known as “Ed Woods.” Ed Woods describe themselves as, “B-Movie, Rock`n`Roll & TV Game Or Die !! They are ”ED WOODS”. Link Wray is their father. Ed Wood is their Grandfather. Divine is their Mom. Big Foot is their Pet. Thank you!!”

Ed Woods are, in my opinion, one of the best garage bands around. They have some shows coming up if you are in Tokyo over the next few weeks. In fact, they are playing tomorrow night 12/2(Sat) in Nagano, @Live House J. “MIDNIGHT RAMBLER” and Ed Woods will appear with UnderGrounded Monogram, Mr. Fin And Jake, Living Is Not Breathing.

#5) ED WOODS – Rock Shock In My Head https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hCF1wYMzZ4

At #4 are three guys who contributed a hot track to the Original Soundtrack of “Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock n Roll Ghost Story.” They are from Tokyo also and they are called, the Mackshow!” I’ve seen these guys live before and not only did they rock, they were funny too! Great sounds. Great look. Tokyo’s own Mackshow!

Their bio states: “The Japanese Rock & Roll icon of 21st century, sets the unique concept such as Leather jacket, regent hair, rock and roll and the “Showa” (Japanese 60’s~80’s) style three piece R&R band. They formed in 2002 by Vocal & guitar Kozzy Mack, bass Tommy Mack, and drums Bikeboy. For much of their career, most of their performances were held at club circuits. Very simple original R&R sound and vocal skills hit all over Japan.”

Next up is a group that must have stepped into some sort of time machine. They are called the Learners! The Learners are known for covering songs from the 50s and beyond. They describe themselves as “Girl pop, punk, ska, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll” and they revive famous songs. At #2 is a girl’s band that I think just might be one of the best girl’s punk band in Japan! They are Su凸ko D凹koi! How does one pronounce that? I don’t know, just try this: Su Ko D Koi! This is their latest video and it is for a song called, “Momanaide.” “Momanaide” is about her ex-boyfriend who has a new girlfriend and she pleads with him to not rub her, uh, well, not rub her tits…. Later on, when she fumes about what is going on, she consoles herself by remembering that she has a new boyfriend. It’s cynical and funny. Theie new album goes on sale Jan. 17, 2018.

At #1 this week are Kyushu’s favorite sons, The Routes. The Routes bio says: “Based in bowl in the mountains (Hita City, Oita prefecture), Anglo-Nipponese trio The Routes play independently over 600 miles south of the Tokyo garage scene.
The Routes play mostly original music, taking influence from UK and US 60s music and culture, happily oblivious to the fads and trends of today.” I know for a fact that The Routes are getting airplay all over the world. And I air them a lot on my new FM radio, The Mike Rogers Show on InterFM 897 in Tokyo, Radio Neo 79.5 in Naogoya and nationwide on Radiko.jp. Please check it out! It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Nov. 25, 2017!

First up are a group of four fab ladies from Montreal, Canada named Pale Lips. They say they are a “Bubblegum Punk/ Power Pop/ Rock n’ Roll” band and “Drippy mascara slopped rock n’ roll with sprinkles!” I believe this is their debut on our countdown but I expect we’re going to be seeing lots more of this hot band soon!

At #2 is another band to debut on our countdown today! They are Pip Blom from Amsterdam! I can’t recall how I stumbled upon this band but this is great! (And they are nice people, too!) Their bio states: “Never listen to people who want to change your music. With that advice from a fellow musician Amsterdam based Pip Blom (20)started making songs.”

At #1 is a band from New York City that was introduced to us by the curator to the stars, Rin Ishioka! Thanks Rin! The band is the Dirty Fences. Their bio states: “New York City’s favorite hard-working band. Dirty Fences’ fast, catchy, street-level, rock n roll will LIGHT THE FIRE OF YOUR DESIRE.” The Dirty Fences also has one of my favorite videos of 2015, “Judy (Don’t Go)”

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). Has produced a few smash hit programs (some real losers, too!) and several of Tokyo’s highest rated and most famous radio programs. A recent hit program was “The TV Show” (Set Program with “Ninja Slayer”) which, between April – Oct. 2015, garnered over 10 million viewers. He is currently producing and hosting “The Mike Rogers Show” every Sunday live on InterFM 89.7 in Tokyo and Radio Neo in Nagoya 79.5 and nationally broadcast on Radiko.jp (Internet radio). And his life’s dream is his just completed full-length motion picture, “Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock and Roll Ghost Story”which will be released by a major Japanese motion picture company and in theaters all across Japan in Autumn 2017.

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Nov. 17, 2017!

First up is Dream Wife. Their bio says: “The pop-punk trio – Alice, Bella & Rakel – Dream Wife formed within the walls of art university in Brighton. At #2 is Peter Litvin. Peter is an actor, music producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist. This is cool. It was released on the Troma Label. Troma usually releases horror shit so this is right up their alley.

At #1 is a band from L.A. that some people love and some people hate. Their name is “Starcrawler” and I love them. OK. OK… Maybe they are not exactly from the streets, but they’ve been on our charts now 3 times (I think) and they still only have less than 3000 likes on Facebook… ) So, that’s still minor in my books! Maybe if they really were backed by big mney, then they’d have 100,000 FB likes by now, no?

By the way, since they’ve had so many great tunes and suddenly have released several videos, I suspect trouble and wonder if there is some crisis going on with this band? Guys! Stick with us! We might be slow but we come to realize sooner or later!

Think about that for half a second… Iggy Pop writing a comment for an album??? WTF?????

What exactly is Boris? Boris is one of those killer Japanese rock bands that sell out all their shows in the west, but in Japan, they are not big at all (Kurosawa the film director wasn’t famous in Japan either!). Boris kicks fucking ass and takes the listener to another totally different dimension.

First up is a hot band Punk, Garage, Rock band from Leeds. Louder than War says: “Paying homage to the Ramones and their favourite 60s girl-groups via the medium of punky pop songs. And, make no mistake, that’s a perfectly fine thing to be. There’s actually a bit more to the Twitch than that might suggest, though – that extra bit of proficiency and imagination a band needs to make them stand out.”

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Nov. 4, 2017!

First up is a hot new rock band from Atlanta, Georgia that has been getting airplay on my FM radio show and will again on my new, nationally broadcast FM radio show on InterFM, “The Mike Rogers Show” tomorrow morning. They are called, Starbender! Starbender’s bio says, “Hailing from Atlanta, GA, StarBenders are a half-way home for the misunderstood. Front-woman, Kimi Shelter and her gang have concocted a perfect alchemic blend of androgynous rock and roll power with “stuck in your brain” pop melodies. Imagine David Bowie playing 7 minutes in heaven with Debbie Harry.”

Edwoods are a bunch of delinquents from Japan in a “Trash Crazy” band named Ed Woods. These guys have been around since 1999 making their own brand of crazy fucking rock n roll. Their names are: Billy Trash, Johnny Trash and Jet Trash. Their story goes like this: “(Ed Woods is) B-Movie, Rock`n`Roll & TV Game Or Die !! They are ”ED WOODS”. Link Wray is their father. Ed Wood is their Grandfather. Divine is their Mom. Big Foot is their Pet. Thank you!!”

I played these guys on the radio last week and the reaction was immediate: the guys in the studio and the listeners loved it. The station management hated it…. OK? What more could you want?

He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). Hey! Like cool new music and not that crap on commercial radio? Welcome! It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Oct. 28, 2017! While everyone and their sister are doing Halloween things, I’m gonna give you a break and just play brand new cool stuff and Spotlight an awesome Japanese band!

First up is something hot off the presses that just came out yesterday! It’s one of the hottest new bands around, The Touts! Their bio says, “Touts are a three piece band from Derry, Ireland. A singer that can’t sing, a mod that can’t play bass and a drummer that can’t see.” This is their third single. All the songs by the Touts kick ass!

At #4 is another song that just came out… Like a few hours ago. No kidding. It’ the latest by London’s own, The Rews. The Rews are aLondon/Belfast based “High Energy Alterna-Rock Pop Female Duo consisting of songstress Shauna Tohill & beat-maker vocalist Collette Williams.”

At this week’s #3 is Peter118 from Jolly Old England, Stoke-on-Trent to be exact. These guys make the chart because when we played this track on my radio show last week, Japan’s most famous DJ, George Williams stopped and said, “This is a great song!” That rarely happens (he’s picky!) Peter118 is a punk outfit with a positive message. Dig it!

The Van T’s have graced our countdown two or three times in the past and I think this group is fab! Their bio says, “Formed in around 2013 by twins Hannah and Chloe, The Van T’s have already enjoyed widespread praise from blogs and radio including Bella Union honcho Simon Raymonde. This acclaim has spread outwith the UK with radio plays in France and the US.” (well, and Japan MANY dozens of times, on one of Japan’s biggest 5 radio stations, but I guess you guys don’t check your Facebook!) 😉

Spotlight Artist! Today’s spotlight artists are the Vivian Boys. The Vivian Boys are a Tokyo based Japanese garage band. AND THEY ARE FUCKING HOT!!!!! I think the first time I ever played them on the radio here was about 10 years ago and people loved them. They claim to be inspired by Sonics, Shangri-Las, Velvet Underground, British MOD, Nancy Sinatra, and New York Punk.

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Oct. 23, 2017! And it’s almost Halloween! Who cares? Well, I don’t know the answer to that question, but you won’t see me poo-pooing the spirit, so today I have some of my favorite bands from Japan and my favorite new band together in a special Halloween Mix!

First up, are a bunch of delinquents from Japan in a “Trash Crazy” band named Ed Woods. These guys have been around since 1999 making their own brand of crazy fucking rock n roll. Yesterday, on my regular radio show, I played, “She’s not a loser” when the song stopped I screamed into the microphone. “What a freaking great song! One. More. Well, today, we have something hot off the presses from their stylish label name “Pissfart Records.” This band is going places folks! Amyl and the Sniffers are gonna be huge!

The Neatbeats are easy to understand for a foreign audience. They are the Japanese Beatles. But this is no crap cover band. No siree! It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Oct. 14, 2017!

First up, are a band that hit #1 on the Wassuprockerradio charts this week and made me go, “What the heck????” You know if Wassup Rocker Radio gives a stamp of approval then that band is hot shit! Femme Krawall calls themselves (herself?) a “garagen-riot-grrl-surf-punk band.” There’s something perculiar about this band and I invite you to go take a look at the banner at the top of their Facebook page. It is a video by Mario Cuzic who, with co-hort Bryce “Bee Bee” Clarke, made the legendary and seminal film about the Japanese Garage scene called, “Garage Rockin’ Craze.” It’s awesome! But shit! About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). Has produced a few smash hit programs (some real losers, too!) and several of Tokyo’s highest rated and most famous radio programs. A recent hit program was “The TV Show” (Set Program with “Ninja Slayer”) which, between April – Oct. 2015, garnered over 10 million viewers. He is currently producing and hosting “WTF?” the hugely popular Sunday live show on InterFM 89.7 . And his life’s dream is his just completed full-length motion picture, “Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock and Roll Ghost Story”which will be released by a major Japanese motion picture company and in theaters all across Japan in Autumn 2017.

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Oct. 8, 2017!

First up, are a band from Hollywood, Calif. named the Crazy Squeeze. Lord Rutledge of “Faster and Louder” writes: “Not since the Traveling Wilburys has there been a supergroup as universally anticipated as The Crazy Squeeze. If you were into the underground punk/rock n’ roll scene in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, you know who these guys are… Where else but in Hollywood could Johnny Witmer (of The Stitches), Frankie Delmane (of Now Wave faves the Teenage Frames), Chris B. (of the Richmond Sluts), and Johnny Sleeper (of the Superbees) have come together to combine their prodigious & complementary talents for the betterment of the free world?! The Crazy Squeeze – now with Dat Ngo ex-Super Bees in on bass – are everything you’d expect and then some. Combining vintage glam wham-bam (New York Dolls, Slade) with straight-up rockin’ punk, their sound is pure raunchy fun with hooks out the wazoo. You know: music for fucking!… If you enjoyed the Dolls, Joneses, or any of these guys’ old bands, it’s time to get on board the Crazy Squeeze bandwagon. Pour yourself a hard drink, and shake it!”

I think there might be something not so good going on with this band as I checked their label page for infomation, but could not find the Beverleys listed. Uh oh… Anyway, this shit is hot. At #1 this week is the all-girl band from Tokyo that I think is Japan’s best girl’s punk band. Their name is Su凸ko D凹koi. How does one read that? I don’t know but just say, Su Ko D Koi. This video is hilarious! They are singing about their old boyfriend and how they don’t want him rubbing the tits of his new girlfriend… “Momanaide” means “Don’t rub (or massage).” So they are singing, “Don’t massage her tits.” Even though they all have a new boyfriend.
