Japan’s oldest and most famous women’s magazine, a magazine that’s been around for more than 50 years, “Josei Jishin” has run a news feature about “A Japanese Rock ‘n’ Roll Ghost Story”!
Josei Jishin translates into “Women’s Confidence” and it is ubiquitous in Japan; you see it at all the banks, hair salons and doctor’s offices. There isn’t a person over 10 years old in Japan who hasn’t heard of Josei Jishin.
On Saturday, July 18, 2015, they ran a news feature about “A Japanese Rock ‘n’ Roll Ghost Story”!

Time once again for this week’s Top 3! The Top 3 Indies Artists videos for the week of July 17, 2015!
At #3 is a band from Finland named, Have You Ever Seen The Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS? The band’s acronym is the handy HYESTJFAVHS? And their flower garage has a punk attitude injected into garage rock and doo wop. And all this played with no guitar, instead building its distorted melodies with old Casios and sounding playful in the process.

A friend turned me onto this week’s #2 artist. I forgot who my friend is (some friend I am, eh?), but remembered the band’s name. They are called, The Whereabouts. Described by the BBC as ‘Jump Beat’, The Whereabouts are a young, energetic four piece rhythm & blues, rock & roll band from Kingscourt in Co. Cavan, Ireland. All four lads in The Whereabouts have been playing music from a very young age under the influence of their parents and bands such as The Rolling Stones, Dr. Feelgood, The Doors, The Beatles, The Kinks and Chuck Berry.

First up, check out a brand new band from London named “Yak.” Yak are on Rough Trade so they have an awesome pedigree. Here’s what the label says: “Yak return with a limited three track 7″ EP on Fat Possum. The singles shows all sides of the already much loved London trio Yak. ‘Smile’ is a slow and dirty seductive piece of garage rock stomp that builds and builds a la the Cramps and The Birthday Party whilst ‘Plastic People’ is a more uptempo and joyous pop number with Pete Murphy esque vocals on top of a pulsating rhythm section and explosive, ever-shifting and ever-escalating guitars. Time once again for this week’s Top 3 New Artist Videos for the week of June 27, 2015. Welcome!

Now, onto the countdown… At #3 is a band that gets lots of airplay on my FM radio show, “What the Funday” on InterFM every Sunday morning from 8 am ~ 11am. Their name is Kids On A Crime Spree and they are a rock trio from Oakland, California.

Next up is a new artist that I just discovered and I think she’s going to be big. Zella Day! Her real name is Zella Day Kerr and she is an American singer-songwriter from Pinetop, Arizona. Her first single was a cover of the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” and it has over 100,000 views on Youtube. Check it here.

At #1 this week is Drenge. Drenge are an English two-piece alternative rock band, based in Castleton, Derbyshire, based in Sheffield. The band is made up of Eoin Loveless, on guitar and vocals, and his younger brother Rory, on drums. They take their name from the Danish word for “boys”, although it is pronounced differently. Oh, and they are appearing at Fuji Rock this year!

And last but not least are one of Tokyo’s favorite bands, the Watanabe’s. I was thinking about putting a Belle & Sebastian song in here, but then I changed my mind. Everyone already knows Belle & Sebastian and if you like them, you’ll definitely like the Watanabe’s. This video also has some great shots around Tokyo. Cool!
