It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for June 9, 2018! First up is the legendary James Williamson (of Iggy Pop fame). James has a new band and a new record out. James’ new band is called, “James Williamson & the Pink Hearts” and their album, “Behind the Shade” will be out June 22.

And speaking of legendary musicians, at #2 is Wilco Johnson from “Dr. Feelgood” fame. Wilco Johnson seems to be coming to Japan again soon (as he seems to do every year and sells out all his shows every time!)

Wilko Johnson’s brand new album ‘Blow Your Mind’ has been announced! This is Wilko’s first album of new material in 30 years and the follow up to the incredible ‘Going Back Home’.  The man himself said, ‘It’s the album I never thought I’d get to write!” Here’s the lead-off single for that album.

At #1 is my new fave band! Their name is Lucy & The Rats. I have been playing them religiously EVERY WEEK on my radio show in Japan, The Mike Rogers Show every Sunday morning… (Mike Rogers Show – every Sunday from 5 am ~ 7 am. About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). Starting off the countdown are my new favorite band that were introduced to us by DJ Kish of the world famous Wassup Rocker Radio and they are a band from Brooklyn, New York and their name is Surfbort. The say their music is “Freak Music” and the “Don’T believe in Google.” (I get the pun!!!!) This band rocks! The Southern California folk-rock band consists of Doug Hammond on guitar, bass, vocals and keys, and Doug’s daughter Tatiana Hammond on vocals. “Bon Voyage” is their 5th album to date.”

And starting off the countdown today are from Los Angeles and they are a “rock, punk, power pop, and alternative rock” outfit called, “Professor and the Madman.” Their bio says, “There’s a musical adventure coming from Orange County, California and the UK, orchestrated by Professor and the Madman.” Punk Globe writes, “Sean Elliott and Alfie Agnew of D.I. and Rat Scabies and Paul Gray of the Damned have gotten together to make one hell of an album. It’s full of different sounds for different songs and each musician brings in their specialty. As a fan of D.I. and the Damned, it’s hard to explain without gushing. It’s got some definite early garage psychedelia, some pop, some rock and some punk rock.”

At #2 is my favorite new band. They are called Amyl and the Sniffers and they are from Australia. This band is going to be the big hit success of 2018. They are about to make a huge announcement that will literally drop your jaw. I’ve been playing them EVERY WEEK on my FM radio show in Japan, “The Mike Rogers Show” on InterFM 897 in Tokyo and Radio Neo in Nagoya 79.5. (Please come Like my FB page!) This is an earlier track of Amyl & the Sniffers. I think this is the best female fronted punk band since Joan Jett or X-Ray Specs.

I have a real treat for you at #1! The LEGENDARY Duncan Reid! Duncan “Kid” Reid was an original member of the London Power/Pop band, the Boys. Wikipedia says: “The Boys are an English punk rock/power pop band formed in London in 1976. Members of the band had previously played in other groups, including London SS and Hollywood Brats.”

So Duncan Reid is back and causing trouble and we LOVE it! His new band is called “Duncan Reid and the Big Heads” and their newest album is called, “Bombs Away!”

Top 3 Indies Videos Jan. 20, 2018 – Elmo Weber, Amyl & the Sniffers, Starcrawler!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for Jan. 20, 2018!

First up is an DJ/artist who was introduced to us by the Radio Indie Alliance as well as the radio show/promotion known as Radio Candy. The artist’s name is Elmo Weber. Elmo lives in the Ultra-cool Hollywood area of Los Angeles somewhere near the corner of Bedlam and Squalor Blvd.  Not much is know about this mysterious man and his enigmatic ways but I can tell you one thing, he makes the most awesome mashups I’ve ever heard. Today’s track is an unthinkable mashup of the 1958 Hollywood movie version of the musical, “South Pacific” …and Led Zeppelin…. Yes. You read correctly.

I played this on my new radio show, The Mike Rogers Show (Please come Like our Facebook) and the reaction was incredible. The best reaction from the listeners in at least 5 years. People were going nuts on Facebook and Twitter (Follow on Twitter) asking where they can get this track. It is already a legendary track on FM radio in Japan. Play it loud.

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). Has produced a few smash hit programs (some real losers, too!) and several of Tokyo’s highest rated and most famous radio programs. A recent hit program was “The TV Show” (Set Program with “Ninja Slayer”) which, between April – Oct. 2015, garnered over 10 million viewers.  He is currently producing and hosting “The Mike Rogers Show” every Sunday live on InterFM 89.7  in Tokyo and Radio Neo in Nagoya 79.5 and nationally broadcast on Radiko.jp (Internet radio).  And his life’s dream is his just completed full-length motion picture, “Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock and Roll Ghost Story”which will be released by a major Japanese motion picture company and in theaters all across Japan in Autumn 2017.

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown and our first of the new year! Happy New Year! Today we have my recent fave three Indies bands for the week of Jan. 6, 2018!

First up are four guys who say they are “Pub Punk” and a “shed rock band from SUNNY COAST 4573” This is awesome and reminds me of the guts of late 1970s punk from Los Angeles.

Next up is a band that has been getting me lots of rave comments, like, “Rogers! Where do you find this bizarre-assed shit?” or “This is fucking great! I love it!” Yes. It’s the mighty Cambodian Space Project! Their bio states: “COSMIC CROSS-CULTURE RENDEZVOUS FEATURING SPACE TRIPPERS FROM VARIOUS PLANETS PREPARING A MISSION TO BEAM ITS UNIQUE MIX OF SPACE ROCK, SURF, REGGAE, DUB, KHMER SURIN, CAMBODIAN ROCK PSYCHEDELICA OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD AND INTO ANOTHER…” (sic). This is one of my favorite “new” bands. I hear that Iggy Pop really digs them big time too and is pushing the hell outta the band on his radio show.

At this week’s #1 is a band that I debuted on Japanese FM radio a LONG time ago! and has been aired on my radio show and this countdown many many times. They are Starcrawler from Los Angeles! Their bio says, “We will kill you.” So what more could you ask?

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown! This week is a special! Today we have my recent fave three Indies bands and Japanese pick for the week of Dec. 7, 2017!

First up are three guys from Boston on the Slovenly label named The Monsieurs. The Monsieurs were introduced to us by the curator for the stars, Rin Ishioka.

Vanyaland magazine says: “Ask anyone who knows their shit about Boston rock and roll will tell you that garage-punk lords The Monsieurs are one of the best — if not the best — live bands around town.”

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Nov. 17, 2017!

First up is Dream Wife. Their bio says: “The pop-punk trio – Alice, Bella & Rakel – Dream Wife formed within the walls of art university in Brighton. When they left uni that’s when the rocky roads of Dream Wife kicked in full speed: Their reputation as one of the best new live bands in London is already cemented following tours with Sleigh Bells, The Kills and their recent US triumphant stateside debut on tour at SXSW which earned them praise from NPR, DIY, Stereogum, Nylon, Entertainment Weekly etc. Armed with razor-sharp pop tunes and a take no prisoners punk attitude they’re are known to elicit pure chaos at their raucous live shows.”

At #2 is Peter Litvin. Peter is an actor, music producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist. This is cool. It was released on the Troma Label. Troma usually releases horror shit so this is right up their alley.

At #1 is a band from L.A. that some people love and some people hate. Their name is “Starcrawler” and I love them. OK. OK… Maybe they are not exactly from the streets, but they’ve been on our charts now 3 times (I think) and they still only have less than 3000 likes on Facebook… ) So, that’s still minor in my books! Maybe if they really were backed by big mney, then they’d have 100,000 FB likes by now, no?

By the way, since they’ve had so many great tunes and suddenly have released several videos, I suspect trouble and wonder if there is some crisis going on with this band? Guys! Stick with us! We might be slow but we come to realize sooner or later!

Their bio says, “We will kill you.” ….. Cool. Please. Do it. I’m sick of this shit.

Spotlight Artist!  Today’s spotlight artists are  Boris from Japan! Boris kicks ass and even Iggy Pop wrote comments for their last album!

Think about that for half a second… Iggy Pop writing a comment for an album??? WTF?????

What exactly is Boris? Boris is one of those killer Japanese rock bands that sell out all their shows in the west, but  in Japan,  they are not big at all (Kurosawa the film director wasn’t famous in Japan either!). Boris kicks fucking ass and takes the listener to another totally different dimension.

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). Has produced a few smash hit programs (some real losers, too!) and several of Tokyo’s highest rated and most famous radio programs. A recent hit program was “The TV Show” (Set Program with “Ninja Slayer”) which, between April – Oct. 2015, garnered over 10 million viewers.  He is currently producing and hosting “The Mike Rogers Show” every Sunday live on InterFM 89.7  and nationally broadcast on Radiko. And his life’s dream is his just completed full-length motion picture, “Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock and Roll Ghost Story”which will be released by a major Japanese motion picture company and in theaters all across Japan in Autumn 2017.

Top 3 Indies Videos 7/22/17! Starcrawler, Tacocat, Polo & Pan, Daisuke Takase (Jpn)!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of July 22, 2017!

First up is a brand new band from Los Angeles. Issue Magazine wrote: “I am god. I am a dog. I am also a cult member of @thestarcrawler,” reads Arrow de Wilde’s Twitter bio. With intense dedication to style, performance and a fanciful streak of madness, this 17-year-old fronts Los Angeles-based band Starcrawler. Her red-stained mouth, wide eyes and feverish energy make for take-no-prisoners punk-rock theater. Fresh out of high school (or almost), with only a handful of performances behind them and one single, Starcrawler already commands our attention.”

Next up is a delightful new artist from Paris, France, two guys who called themselves, Polo & Pan. They describe their music as “Space Jungle.” Their bio says, “Polo & Pan were born under the stars in 2012, shortly after there was an orbital collision of two satellites : Polocorp & Peter Pan.” 

I chose this video this week because this might be one of my favorites videos on 2017. The choreography, direction, conception, lighting and action are worthy of an Academy award. Really! You watch this and tell me the last time you saw an arty video like this – AND it comes with a great song. Been playing this on my Sunday radio show WTF? At #1 this week is a band from Seattle called Tacocat. Tacocat is a “Post Post Punk Pop Pop” band. They also say they are: “Go-Go’s meets The Monkees. Kurt meets Courtney.” This video is pretty cool as they have a girl in there who looks A LOT like Guilian Anderson who played Scully in the “X-Files.” It’s a cool song and the video is worth several laughs. Spotlight Artist! Today’s spotlight is on another Japanese artist who is considered a guitar maestro. My partner in video production, Ken Nishikawa writes: “Masterpiece by Daisuke Takase who is considered by many to be one of the greatest rock guitar virtuosos not only in Japan but the world!” Sorry but Daisuke Takase has no Facebook fan page or Twitter or anything like that.
