Top 3 Indies Videos 12/21/18! Japanese bands! The Pats Pats, The Routes, The Tomboys!

Welcome back the this week’s Top 3 videos. Today we have a special of three Japanese bands! Three cool Japanese acts!

First up is a Japanese girls band that had this particular record produced by Glen Matlock, the original bassist of the Sex Pistols! Their name is the Tomboys and I gather they are from Osaka! They have also opened for the mighty 50 Kaitenz!

From her wartime childhood to geisha apprenticeship to the glory days of a top geisha. This film illustrates the trials of the ultimate Japanese cultural enigma that is – The Life of a Geisha.

“Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock and Roll Ghost Story,” enjoyed its World-Premiere at the Raindance Film Festival in London on Sept. 25, 2017, and was released by a major Japanese motion picture company and in theaters all across Japan.  The DVD and Blu-Ray went on sale all across Japan on June 13, 2018! It also enjoyed its Canadian theatrical release on August 31, 2018!

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for Aug. 11, 2018!

Starting us off today is another band from the exploding Australian band scene. Their band name is Tony Dork and they were introduced to us by DJ Alex Kish of Wassup Rocker Fame! Tony Dork are from Melbourne and their bio says, “Stiff bikkies! we do band.” Well, OK. If you say so!

This is cool. I like how it seems they don’t give a shit.

Next up at #2 is a band from San Jose in California and their name is “Get Married.” Get Married describe themselves as, “California Rock and Roll // Slacker Pop // Salsa.” They aslo claim they like, We like “Weezer, Metallica, and The Beach Boys.” WTF? That’s an unusual crowd! Check out their new video that just came out yesterday.

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST!  This week’s Spotlight Artist is Japan’s own garage punk heroes, the Routes.  The Routes have hit #1 on our charts several times and here they are again! Their bio reads: “Based in bowl in the mountains (Hita City, Oita prefecture), Anglo-Nipponese trio The Routes play independently over 600 miles south of the Tokyo garage scene. The Routes play mostly original music, taking influence from UK and US 60s music and culture, happily oblivious to the fads and trends of today.”

Top 3 Indies Videos 12/01/17 – Five Fab Japanese Indies and Garage Bands!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown! This week s a special! Today we have five of my recent fave Japanese Indies bands for the week of Dec. 1, 2017! These are five groups that I think could do alright in the west. First up are a group of four fab psychos doing the trash garage thingy like a boss! They are from Tokyo known as “Ed Woods.” Ed Woods describe themselves as, “B-Movie, Rock`n`Roll & TV Game Or Die !! They are ”ED WOODS”. Link Wray is their father. Ed Wood is their Grandfather. Divine is their Mom. Big Foot is their Pet. Thank you!!” 

Ed Woods are, in my opinion, one of the best garage bands around. They have some shows coming up if you are in Tokyo over the next few weeks. In fact, they are playing tomorrow night 12/2(Sat) in Nagano, @Live House J.  “MIDNIGHT RAMBLER” and Ed Woods will appear with UnderGrounded Monogram, Mr. Fin And Jake, Living Is Not Breathing.

At #4 are three guys who contributed a hot track to the Original Soundtrack of “Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock n Roll Ghost Story.” They are from Tokyo also and they are called, the Mackshow!” I’ve seen these guys live before and not only did they rock, they were funny too! Great sounds. Great look. Tokyo’s own Mackshow!

Their bio states: “The Japanese Rock & Roll icon of 21st century, sets the unique concept such as Leather jacket, regent hair, rock and roll and the “Showa” (Japanese 60’s~80’s) style three piece R&R band. They formed in 2002 by Vocal & guitar Kozzy Mack, bass Tommy Mack, and drums Bikeboy. For much of their career, most of their performances were held at club circuits. Very simple original R&R sound and vocal skills hit all over Japan.”

Next up is a group that must have stepped into some sort of time machine. They are called the Learners! The Learners are known for covering songs from the 50s and beyond. They describe themselves as “Girl pop, punk, ska, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll” and they revive famous songs. At #2 is a girl’s band that I think just might be one of the best girl’s punk band in Japan! They are Su凸ko D凹koi! How does one pronounce that? I don’t know, just try this: Su Ko D Koi! This is their latest video and it is for a song called, “Momanaide.” “Momanaide” is about her ex-boyfriend who has a new girlfriend and she pleads with him to not rub her, uh, well, not rub her tits…. Later on, when she fumes about what is going on, she consoles herself by remembering that she has a new boyfriend. It’s cynical and funny. Theie new album goes on sale Jan. 17, 2018.

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Nov. 4, 2017!

First up is a hot new rock band from Atlanta, Georgia that has been getting airplay on my FM radio show and will again on my new, nationally broadcast FM radio show on InterFM, “The Mike Rogers Show” tomorrow morning. They are called, Starbender! Starbender’s bio says, “Hailing from Atlanta, GA, StarBenders are a half-way home for the misunderstood. Front-woman, Kimi Shelter and her gang have concocted a perfect alchemic blend of androgynous rock and roll power with “stuck in your brain” pop melodies. Imagine David Bowie playing 7 minutes in heaven with Debbie Harry.”

Next up, at #2 is a UK band from Manchester named Luxury Death. Their bio reads: “Luxury Death is the brainchild of boyfriend/girlfriend duo Ben Thompson & Meg Williams, churning out hauntingly bittersweet lofi punk and producing a series of art magazines under the same moniker.“

At #1 is Japan’s own the Routes. The Routes are currently heading shows in Spain and Portugal! Wow! The Routes have hit #1 on our charts several times and here they are again! Their bio reads: “Based in bowl in the mountains (Hita City, Oita prefecture), Anglo-Nipponese trio The Routes play independently over 600 miles south of the Tokyo garage scene. 
The Routes play mostly original music, taking influence from UK and US 60s music and culture, happily oblivious to the fads and trends of today.” The Routes just released their newest slab of wax and it is hot!

Spotlight Artist!  Today’s spotlight artists are EDWOODS from Japan!

Edwoods are a bunch of delinquents from Japan in a “Trash Crazy” band named Ed Woods. These guys have been around since 1999 making their own brand of crazy fucking rock n roll. Their names are: Billy Trash, Johnny Trash and Jet Trash. Their story goes like this: “(Ed Woods is) B-Movie, Rock`n`Roll & TV Game Or Die !! They are ”ED WOODS”. Link Wray is their father. Ed Wood is their Grandfather. Divine is their Mom. Big Foot is their Pet. Thank you!!”

I played these guys on the radio last week and the reaction was immediate: the guys in the studio and the listeners loved it. The station management hated it…. OK? What more could you want?

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Apr. 16, 2017!

First up is a band introduced to us by my former boss and DJ GOD, Rodney Bingenheimer of “Rodney on the Roq” fame. The band is the Warbly Jets! The Warbly Jets are a 4-piece currently residing in Los Angeles. That’s about all I can tell you about these guys. Next up is a guy who was introduced to me by my good friend, Ginger Wildheart. It’s Ryan Hamilton & The Traitors. These guys are a trans-Atlantic rock n roll band hailing from Texas and the UK. At number one is probably one of my mostest favorite American rock bands today. It is the Baby Shakes! There are two reasons this is #1 this week: First, they came in first place in the New York Deli Magazine readers poll as “Best Emerging Artist 2017!” award! Wow! That’s huge!!!! And, secondly, this video is this week’s #1 because it was made by my friends, Les Deciduous, Ken Nishikawa and me! Seriously, we just finished this video this week. As usual Ken Nishikawa was a magician on the editing keys and he and Les did a fab job of shooting. I did some too (all out of focus shots are mine! Hee, hee…) It’s not hard to make a great video, though, when your subjects are as hot as the Baby Shakes (Girl’s in the audience were yelling, “Beef Cake, Baby!” when drummer Ryan walked on stage!) TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Today’s Spotlight artist is from Fukuoka in Kushu, Japan! It’s Samehada Shiroko and Dynamite and they are introduced to us by guitar legend, Christopher Jack, leader of the world-famous The Routes!

The song is called, “Moshikashitara” (which means something like, “If it is OK with you…” or “maybe..” or something like that…) I will be playing this particular tune, “Moshikashitara” tomorrow morning on my nationally broadcast FM radio show, “WTF?” What the Funday on InterFM897 on Sunday April 9, 2017! It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of April 2, 2017! Starting us off this week are Kyushu Japan’s favorite sons, The Routes. The Routes just released their newest wax called, “In This Perfect Hell” and it is sold out all over Japan! It’s one of Japan’s hottest girls bands, Su凸ko D凹koi (Just say, “Su Ko D Koi”). Actually, this song was on our chart a couple of weeks ago but it is on the Spotlight this week because THIS SONG IS NOW THE ENDING THEME TO A STAURDAY MORNING NEWS SHOW! In the Osaka (Kansai) area!!!! WTF???? That’s AMAZING!!!!! A recent hit program was “The TV Show” (Set Program with “Ninja Slayer”) which, between April – Oct. 2015, garnered over 10 million viewers.  He is currently producing and hosting “WTF?” the hugely popular Sunday live show on InterFM 89.7 as well as Rakuten Superrr Radio’s  Power Morning everyday Mon. ~ Fri. 6 am ~ 10 am. As well as Rakuten Superrr Radio’s Power Evening Mon. ~ Fri. 5 pm ~ 8 pm. It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Feb. 12, 2017!

The Routes are headed up by Christopher Jack and they’ve been getting TONS of airplay on Rodney on the Roq in Hollywood! Wow! The Routes have their newest album coming out soon. About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). Has produced a few smash hit programs and several of Japan’s highest rated and most famous radio programs. First up is a punk band from Switzerland. This girl looks familiar to me, could she be a member of the Jackets? Yes! She is. Her name is Jack Torera! Her real name is Jackie Brutsche. And, wow! Does she ever have a lot of cool projects going on. About the Jackets (who have been on our countdown before) Wiki says: “The Jackets have electrified concert-goers in every major city in Switzerland and have also played or toured in Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Portugal and Great Britain sharing the stage with bands like The Monsters and The Sonics. Today’s Spotlight Artist! Today’s spotlight artist are the Routes from Oita prefecture in Kyushu, Japan… What??? Yeah. I know. How did that happen? Oita is as far away from the happening scene in Japan as you can get. How is it that one of Japan’s most happening bands got stuck down there? Leader, Christopher Jack (British ex-pat) formed The Routes in 2005 with an endless stream of changing members. Their 5th album coming out soon.
