Top 3 Indies Videos 5/21/17! Moja (Japan), Baby Shakes, Sloan Peterson, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of May 21, 2017!

Once again, today’s line up is awesome (if I must say so myself!) First up is a new artist from Brisbane, Australia named Sloan Peterson. Her bio says, “Sloan Peterson; a love child of 50’s guitar pop and modern garage rock, bursting with a warmth that’s inseparable from her private identity. Influenced by everything from Elvis, to Latin legend Xavier Cugat or the fashion statements of Nancy Sinatra and Bowie – Sloan Peterson is the sum of these influences that adds up to so much more.
Her debut EP is in progress.” Today’s number is her debut single.

Of course she has a Facebook page:

#3) Sloan Peterson – 105

At #2 is Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas who hail from Detroit, Michigan. In 2014, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas released their debut “Secret Evil” and spent two years on the road; countless headline gigs, supports with such like-minded acts as Gogol Bordello, Social Distortion and St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and well-received sets at festivals like Lollapalooza, ACL Music Festival, Osheaga, and Bonnaroo. Long hailed as an explosive and theatrical live outfit, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas will celebrate the release of they new album, “Telephone // Telefono” (On Sale June 23, 2017) with a non-stop North American tour. They’ll debut in Japan on my nationally broadcast FM radio show, “WTF?” on InterFM897 tomorrow, Sunday, May 21, 2017.

Here’s their Facebook page:

#2) Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas – Sorry I Stole Your Man

At #1 this week are no strangers to the countdown, New York’s own, The Baby Shakes! Their Bio says, “Baby Shakes are a rock n’ roll-punk band from New York City. Mary on lead vocals and guitar, Judy on lead guitar and vocals, Claudia on bass and vocals, and Ryan on drums. With catchy melodic vocals over dirty guitars and a killer rhythm section, their influences range from The Ramones and Slade to Chuck Berry and 60’s Motown girl groups.

I love this band! AND their newest album “Turn it Up” goes on sale today (May 19, 2017)!

#1) Baby Shakes – Do What You Want

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Today’s feature are a kickass duo from Tokyo named Moja who are going to appear at the Chester Live 2017 festival in the UK this year! Wow! Moja’s bio says, “What’s Moja sound like??? It’s thundering, passionate, high-speed Dance Music of the kind you’ve which never experienced before. Everyone dances like mad at our shows. And we love to share that space and experience with the audience. We’ve performed in many places such as Tokyo, Toronto, Quebec, New York, London, Liverpool, Hong Kong, Italy, and more…” I’ve seen Moja live several times before. It is difficult to describe their live shows… I haven’t seen anything like it since Iggy Pop. This video captures the live atmosphere of the band about as best as I think possible – which is impossible. This video was given rave reviews by the drummer of the Libertines.

That’s all for today! See you next week when we return to the Top 3 Indies Artist Videos Countdown. See ya! – Mike in Tokyo Rogers

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). Top 3 Videos for April 17, 2016! Japanese Punk Bands! The Privates, Moja, Su Ko D Koi, The Soap!

It’s Top 3 Video time! The best of the Top 3 videos for April 17, 2016 chosen by vote by millions of young, nubile Japanese high school girls in uniforms from all over the country!

This week I want to feature 4 videos of 4 of my all-time favorite Japanese bands.

And did someone say, “Hot Girls”? I did? Yep. From Kyoto, this 3 girl and 1 guy band are sexy as hell (I mean the girls are). This video was originally made for an online music video channel called Gotcha TV. I worked there! It went bankrupt! Urgghhh!!!! But this band is still rocking today!

#4) The Soap – Street

Next up is one of the most fucking radical Japanese rock bands you’ll ever see. Their name is Moja and they are a duet on bass guitar and drums. It blows my mind that these two can make so much noise with just two instruments. They are hot live! Come to Japan! You must see this band live! Here’s their FB page:

#3) Moja – Hello Hello

Next up is what is most probably my very favorite Japanese all-girls band of all-time. Their name is: Su凸ko D凹koi. What does that say? Good question. I don’t know exactly either. Let’s just call them “Su Ko D Koi.” This particular song is awesome. It’s called, “Busu” (“Ugly” in English) and it’s about the laments of a girl who thinks she is ugly. She sings,

“Ugly, ugly, ugly, ugly…. I know I am ugly….
But, I got a boyfriend and we have been going out.
But one day, out of the blue, he hit me for no reason.
I woke up in the hospital and he had his head in his hands.
Then he was gone….
But, I finally was able to realize that finally, he treated me like a woman!
I was happy!”

……It’s kind of like the old 1950s song, “He Hit Me, and It Felt Like a Kiss” by the Crystals but with a 2015 twist! Here’s Su Ko D Koi’s Facebook page:

#2) Su凸ko D凹koi – Busu (Ugly)

Finally, at #1 this week is one of Japan’s most famous, yet still cool, rock bands, The Privates. These guys have been rocking for over 30 years and have released 28 albums to date. Just this week, for Record Store Day, they released their cover version of the 1966 garage classic by the Litter, “Action Woman.” Here’s the Privates’ FB page. Go Like it!

#1) The Privates – Action Woman

Well, that’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed our Japanese Punk / Rock special! See you next week!!!!!  – Mike (in Tokyo) Rogers
