It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for Aug. 25, 2018!

Starting us off today is a Garage Punk – Rock’n’Roll outfit from Turkey. Yeah, you read that right. I think they are from Istanbul, Turkey. Their name is the Reptilians From Andromeda.

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for Aug. 18, 2018!

Starting us off today is a powerpop, punk and rock’n’roll band from Beijing, China named the Sino Hearts. This band’s bio claims they are a “Beijing power pop trio via Vienna.” And they boast their influences to be The Boys, The Flamin Groovies,  Protex, The Barracudas, Firestarters, and bunch of other bands as well as the Real Kids…. A punk band from Beijing? Are you kidding? Nope. They just were here in Japan and played some cool shows last month!

At #2 is a video of a cool “Sunshine Garage Pop” track that was just released this morning! No kidding! It’s the one and only Lisa Mychols! At this week’s #1 is a band introduced to us by DJ Alex Kish of Wassup Rocker Fame! Their name is Hayley and the Crushers and they are a Bubblegum Punk & Roll outfit from San Luis Obispo, California! Hayley and the Crushers say they are, “Poolside Glitter Trash. You went to the beach to get a tan but were rudely interrupted by a gaggle of leather-clad beasts feasting on beer and ho-hos under the pier.” Hey! That’s happened to me!

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST!  Departing from our usual spotlight on a band from Japan is this week’s band coming to Japan! It’s the B-Girls! Their bio states: “The ‘B’ Girls are a Canadian all girl rock’n roll band that formed in 1976 and recorded on Bomp Records. They moved to NYC in 1977 and toured w the Clash.” The B-Girls are coming to Japan in September!

First up is Lisa Mychols with her latest song that there would be no way to find – because even the great I (Mike Rogers) do not know what the official name of this band – so you are in for a treat!  All Music says: “Lisa Mychols made an impressive splash on the Los Angeles pop underground of the 1990s, especially with her band the Masticators. Once the new millennium had dawned and that vibrant musical community had begun to emerge aboveground, Mychols had developed into one of its most accomplished songwriters, taking an obsession with the 1960s and 1970s AM dial and updating the sound for a new generation of pop/rock addicts.”

Spotlight Artist!  Today’s spotlight are another band that appears in “Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock n Roll Ghost Story.”  They are the mighty “50 Kaitenz.” One of the most fun and entertaining concerts I have ever seen in my life and I’ve seen a lot of concerts. Danny, the lead singer of the 50 Kaitenz is starring in Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock n Roll Ghost Story.

I love the 50 Kaitenz. Many years ago, I saw them the first time and thought, “This is Japan’s best rock n roll band!!” They are fucking funny, they rock and they are cool! The 50 Kaitenz are destined to become one of Japan’s most famous bands of all time. If you get a chance to see these guys, you HAVE to go. (Oh, and I’m going to make one of their next videos and rumor has it they have a new record/CD coming out!!!!!!)

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of August 25, 2017! There’s so much good music today that we have a special! Five songs for the price of three!

First up are the Darts and this song that just came out a few days ago! They are a garage-psych rock 4 piece girls rock band from Phoenix AZ and Los Angeles CA. The Darts say they are: “Garage-psych-rock grrls who will make your head slam and your feet shake. And then there’s the music.”

At #4 is Derek Zanetti from Pittsburgh, PA and he calls his act, the Homeless Gospel Choir. His bio says, “The Homeless Gospel Choir (Derek), is a protest singer, author and artist based out of Pittsburgh, PA. Through his on-stage humor and vulnerability, Derek creates an atmosphere of inclusion and community. He engages with the audience in a way that allows them to know that they’re not alone. His new record, Normal, was described by Frank Turner as “a generationally defining album for the underground punk scene.” He also said, “In half an hour, Derek reminded me of what punk’s supposed to be.”

At #3 are an Alternative music 4 piece outfit from Cardiff (I guess that’s in the UK). Their name is the Estrons. Contact Music says: “Estrons are a Welsh band of misfits full of attitude and stories to share. Their unique blend of indie rock and riot grrrl vocals works perfectly to create a sound akin to the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Blood Red Shoes.”

With a sound soaked in bittersweet alternative rock and sun drenched punky power pop, this Los Angeles based formidable threesome have received a number of stellar reviews from music fans and music critics alike along with radio airplay on numerous college and independent stations and by Rodney Bingenheimer.”

At #1 is a punk/psychobilly band from Montreal, Canada! Their name is Creepshow! Spotlight Artist!  Today’s spotlight are a band that I consider to be Japan’s best Beat Band. They are known as the Neatbeats! I am dead serious when I say that the Neatbeats are the most fun and entertaining concert I have ever seen in my life and I’ve seen a lot of concerts. They are starring in Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock n Roll Ghost Story. They are the Neatbeats!

I love the Neatbeats. With Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock n Roll Ghost Story, the Neatbeats are destined to become one of Japan’s most famous bands of all time. If you get a chance to see these guys, you HAVE to go. You’ll see!

Top 3 Indies Videos 5/14/17! Blaire Alise & the Bombshells, Lisa Mychols, Pats Pats (Japan), Single By Sunday

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of May 14, 2017! And do I have some hot music for you today! Really! There were so many great new tunes that I had a hard time picking the best, so today and next week’s countdown’s should be KILLER!

First up is a group from Detroit Michigan that was introduced to us by my friend Shuichi Masaki from the band Titty Twister in Kyushu! Thanks Masaki san! I LOVE THIS BAND! Their name is Blaire Alise & the Bombshells. I’m not sure but this could be my favorite new find of the year so far! They describe themselves as “60s Garage Pop,” and “Girl group inspired rock n’ roll with a sucker punch of garage rock!” This is hot. Look for lots from them in the coming weeks. This is the new sound of Detroit Garage Pop! I’m going to play them on the radio tomorrow (Sunday, May 14, 2017) on WTF? InterFM897. So check it out!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Apr. 30, 2017! And, yippee! It’s Ladies Night (sort of) on the Top 3 Countdown today – all bands that are fronted by the fairer sex! (Is that politically correct for me to say that? No? Well it doesn’t matter because this is my blog and this is Japan so no one here understands what I’ve written here anyway!)

First up is a hot new act introduced to us by the world-famous Kona Cindy, the music curator to the stars! Cindy tells me (If you caught that Brian Eno reference, give yourself 100 extra credits!)”No Girlfriends are awesome!” I agree and their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/NoGirlfriendsBand/) says they are interested in “Ladies Night” too! What timing! (Really, I’m not making that up) so they are perfect to kick off our countdown this week. This video for “Mine” was just released on April 27. Come and get it!

Legendary producer and engineer Lee Popa and songstress Jolee Popa. pinksideofthemoon hails from Portland, Oregon and their FB page describes their music as, “Driven by electronic beats and grooving loops pinksideofthemoon mixes live guitars, bass, keyboards and synthesizers and covers them with a smooth coating of silky female vocals with Dub style echo and effects to create the pinksideofthemoon.” Rumor has it that pinksideofthemoon are currently hanging out in Tokyo.

At this week’s #1 is an artist who has been on our countdown several times. her name is Lisa Mychols. Last.FM says: “For an artist without a great many credits to her name, Lisa Mychols made an impressive splash on the Los Angeles pop underground of the 1990s, especially with her band the Masticators. Once the new millennium had dawned and that vibrant musical community had begun to emerge aboveground, Mychols had developed into one of its most accomplished songwriters, taking an obsession with the 1960s and 1970s AM dial and updating the sound for a new generation of pop/rock addicts.”

I’ve liked Lisa Mychols for a long time, since Rodney on the Roq introduced me to her… But I was blown away when I found out that she has a small but hard core following in Japan! TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Is Fukuoka Japan’s own Bo-Peep! (What? Another Fukuoka band? It’s been bands from Fukuoka like crazy recently: The Routes, Titty Twister, Samehada Shiroko and Dynamite, The Googles, The Swamps!? What’s going on down there in Fukuoka? It’s a rock n roll explosion!

Bo-Peep has been around since 2002 or so and (I believe) they got their FM radio debut on my show back in 2005 or 2006. Rumor has it that Lee Popa and Jolee Popa were spotted at Bo-Peeps live show last night in Tokyo. Riiiiiiiggggght! And I saw Elvis last weekend at the grocery store! Bo-peep is one of the hottest girl’s bands around. This band is going places! They were featured on my last episode of  Japanese Girl Rock Bands (And More) That Matter in 2017!  over at another blog I waste my time on. About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown. The Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of April 2, 2017! As usual, all artists who make the Top 3 countdown, get an automatic pass to be aired on my nationally broadcast FM radio show, “WTF?” (What the Funday?) on InterFM 897 (Sundays 8 am ~ 10 am). interfm.co.jp/wtf/

Starting us off this week are Kyushu Japan’s favorite sons, The Routes. The Routes just released their newest wax called, “In This Perfect Hell” and it is sold out all over Japan! (You can hear some tracks on their Reverbnation page: https://www.reverbnation.com/theroutes)  The Routes claim to fame (written on The Routes Facebook page) is: “No gimmick, no bullshit… Stomp’n’Grind Garage Rock, Garage Punk, Surf, Rhythm and Blues, Psych… Whatever the hell WE want to hear!”

TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ARTIST! Today’s Spotlight Artist have been on our countdown about a gazillion times (well, maybe not quite that many!) It’s one of Japan’s hottest girls bands, Su凸ko D凹koi (Just say, “Su Ko D Koi”). Actually, this song was on our chart a couple of weeks ago but it is on the Spotlight this week because THIS SONG IS NOW THE ENDING THEME TO A STAURDAY MORNING NEWS SHOW! In the Osaka (Kansai) area!!!! WTF???? That’s AMAZING!!!!! The song is the ending theme to ABC – Asashi Broadcasting’s “Oshiete News Live – Seiji No Mikatta”!  (Here’s the webpage for that news program: http://www.asahi.co.jp/mikata/) The show airs every Saturday morning on ABC from 9:30 am ~ 11 am.
