Happy New Year!

Welcome back to this week’s Top 3 videos for Jan. 4, 2019, the first week of 2019! 

Today’s show starts off with a band called Burst Girl.

This is a hard one to call, as it seems an “Idol” group that does punk music! Is this good/bad? Well, I’ll let you check it out and YOU DECIDE! But, give them a listen and give them a chance. This band might become big!  Their name is BURST GIRL. (One thing kinda weird about this… They are drinking soft drinks, but smoking cigarettes like crazy! Besides that, some of the scenes are, well, a bit shocking to say the least for an Idol group’s video! Scene’s of slashing their wrists, bleeding, and the final verse: “Fuck you! Fuck you! I love you!”)

Next up is the Ming City Rockers. Their bio states that the “Ming City Rockers hail from the place so bad they put it next to Grimsby. It’s not that time forgot it; time never knew it was there. Huw Stephens of Radio 1 recently said “Ming City R*ckers are the best rock ‘n’ roll band ever to come out of Immingham” and he could well be right. There’s 4 of them. They like 3 chords. 2 they like better. What’s wrong with this world can be put right with Ming City R*ckers. At #2 this week is a band we’ve been following for a few year years, it’s Amyl and the Sniffers! Amyl will be touring the USA again this year in March and they are breaking big time! Amyl & the Sniffers are a Rock n Roll, Pub punk band from Melbourne, Australia! If you liked X-Ray Specs, The Runaways and the Ramones, this band is for you! This band is wild!

“Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock and Roll Ghost Story,” enjoyed its World-Premiere at the Raindance Film Festival in London on Sept. 25, 2017, and was released by a major Japanese motion picture company and in theaters all across Japan.  The DVD and Blu-Ray went on sale all across Japan on June 13, 2018! It also enjoyed its Canadian theatrical release on August 31, 2018!

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). Top 3 Indies Artist Videos! Mar. 17, 2018: Baby Shakes, Mary’s Kid’s, Amyl & the Sniffers, Darky Dark & the Junkie Bunch!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for Mar. 17, 2018! Today I have a bunch of new punk bands. Starting off the countdown today is a band introduced to us by Alex over at Wassup Rocker Radio (Here’s their Twitter account: https://twitter.com/WassupRckrRadio). The band’s name is Mary’s Kids and they are a punk band from Stockholm, Sweden. Their bio states they are influenced by: “DEAD MOON, DEAD BOYS, MINOR THREAT, BLACK FLAG, RAMONES, ALL…” So that’s pretty good, I think.

At #3 is a band from Orange County near Los Angeles. Their name is Darky Dark and the Junkie Bunch. This is some heavy shit. Shocking, really. I haven’t heard/see anything this shocking since The Dead Kennedys or Fear.

At #2 is my fave new band of the last year or so. From Australia, Amyl & the Sniffers. Amyl got their name because the lead singer’s name is Amy Louise. They are about to make some huge announcements. If you get a chance to see these guys live, Go! They are going to be big!  This is their latest single called, “Cup of Destiny” which just came out!

At #1 this week are no strangers to the countdown, they are my favorite band from New York! They are The Baby Shakes! Their Bio says, “Baby Shakes are a rock n’ roll-punk band from New York City. Mary on lead vocals and guitar, Judy on lead guitar and vocals, Claudia on bass and vocals, and Ryan on drums. With catchy melodic vocals over dirty guitars and a killer rhythm section, their influences range from The Ramones and Slade to Chuck Berry and 60’s Motown girl groups.“

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for Feb 24, 2018! And starting off the countdown today are Amyl & the Sniffers. They were featured on last week’s countdown (“She’s Not a Loser” http://bit.ly/2sEZBuA) and they had the #2 song for the entire year in 2017 (“70s Street Munchies“) in Top 50 Best Songs of 2017 (Music Videos!) http://bit.ly/2BROuCv

At #2 is my new fave new group for 2018 (I found Amyl and the Sniffers in 2017!) and their name is the Reckless Drifters and they are from Los Angeles. The Reckless Drifters are Dramarama’s John Easdale & Mark Englert, The Woolly Bandits’ Christa Collins, Miss Derringer’s Sylvain De Muizon, & original Social Distortion drummer Derek O’Brien. This os their debut single and it is a cover of an old Hank Williams tune (Yeah. You read that right, Hank Williams.) My dad loved Hank Williams and when I first heard this rendition it dropped my jaw…. It takes some real special talent to cover a Hank Williams classic and actually make it original and, dare I say it? Better than the original!

At #1 this week are the Baby Shakes! The Baby Shakes just finished a bunch of shows in Florida where they played with my friends from my old hometown, Mel Bergman and the Phantom Surfers! So to commemorate that event and because it was guitarist Judy’s birthday the other day (well, not the ‘other day,’ more like 4 months ago) here they are at #1…. This also gets to #1 this week as Shuichi Masaki from Fukuoka’s awesome Garage Band, Titty Twister randomly put this video up as his recommendation last night. I was shocked and told him, “Hey! Shuichi san! Ken Nishikawa and I made that Baby Shakes video!”

The 50 Kaitenz just released their new album and I have been playing some of their new songs on my FM radio show just about every week! Top 3 Indies Videos Jan. 20, 2018 – Elmo Weber, Amyl & the Sniffers, Starcrawler!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown for Jan. 20, 2018!

First up is an DJ/artist who was introduced to us by the Radio Indie Alliance as well as the radio show/promotion known as Radio Candy. The artist’s name is Elmo Weber. Elmo lives in the Ultra-cool Hollywood area of Los Angeles somewhere near the corner of Bedlam and Squalor Blvd.  Not much is know about this mysterious man and his enigmatic ways but I can tell you one thing, he makes the most awesome mashups I’ve ever heard. Today’s track is an unthinkable mashup of the 1958 Hollywood movie version of the musical, “South Pacific” …and Led Zeppelin…. Yes. You read correctly.

I played this on my new radio show, The Mike Rogers Show (Please come Like our Facebook) and the reaction was incredible. The best reaction from the listeners in at least 5 years. People were going nuts on Facebook and Twitter (Follow on Twitter) asking where they can get this track. It is already a legendary track on FM radio in Japan. Play it loud.

Top 3 Indies Videos 10/23/17! Japanese Garage Bands and Amyl & the Sniffers!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of Oct. 23, 2017! And it’s almost Halloween! Who cares? Well, I don’t know the answer to that question, but you won’t see me poo-pooing the spirit, so today I have some of my favorite bands from Japan and my favorite new band together in a special Halloween Mix!

First up, are a bunch of delinquents from Japan in a “Trash Crazy” band named Ed Woods. These guys have been around since 1999 making their own brand of crazy fucking rock n roll. Their names are: Billy Trash, Jhonny Trash (sic) and Jet Trash. Their story goes like this: “(Ed Woods is) B-Movie, Rock`n`Roll & TV Game Or Die !! They are ”ED WOODS”. Link Wray is their father. Ed Wood is their Grandfather. Divine is their Mom. Big Foot is their Pet. Thank you!!”

I played these guys on the radio yesterday and the reaction was immediate: the guys in the studio and the listeners loved it. The station management told us to “turn that shit off!” OK… Look, these guys are in Japan so they can make a crazy assed video like this. Be forewarned. This is truly a Halloween Rock n Roll Nightmare! Long live Ed Woods! These guys don’t fuck around!

Yesterday, on my regular radio show, I played, “She’s not a loser” when the song stopped I screamed into the microphone. “What a freaking great song! One. More. So, at #2 is a band named Lulufin the Woo Hoo. These are four girls from Osaka and they describe themselves as “Girl Surf Instro.” This band is cool. Actually, I’ve wanted a recording from these ladies for a long time and thanks to the folks at Kaminari Vol. 2, I got them!

At #1 are one of Japan’s best garage bands: the Routes! The Routes are not strangers to this countdown as they have been on it MANY times in the past! World Famous DJ, Rodney Bingenheimer, has been playing the Routes just about every show since lat year. That’s how much he digs this hot band – from Japan! The Routes have some new hot wax coming out in November and this is the first single from The Routes’ next record, “Dirty Needles and Pins” which will be out November 17 from NYC’s Greenway Records!

The Neatbeats are easy to understand for a foreign audience. They are the Japanese Beatles. But this is no crap cover band. No siree! The Neatbeats are one of the best, and most entertaining bands I have ever seen in my life and I have seen LOTS and LOTS of bands.

First up is a band that is my favorite new band of the year. In fact, I think Amyl & the Sniffers are one of the most fun and exciting acts to come on the scene in years! Monsieur Sean Thomas Bohrman, the head cheese at the world’s coolest label, Burgers Records, wrote TODAY about Amyl & the Sniffers: “Got to release one of my very favorite new bands today on Burger cassette – Amyl and The Sniffers from St Kilda, Australia!!!” Damn! Sean is a man with awesome great taste!

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of August 19, 2017!

At #3 this week is a brand new act from Australia! We introduced them last week, thanks to Alex Kish of Wassup Rocker Radio. Their name is Amyl and The Sniffers. Amyl & the Sniffers consists of Amy Taylor on vocals, Dec Martens on guitar, Bryce Wilson on drums and Fergus Romer on bass. I really like this band and think they are one of the most exciting acts I’ve seen in years! (Amy is perfect for the new queen of punk!)

Dirty Hippie Radio’s Dirty Jeff writes: “Aimee Lay can rock; but, most notably for me, she has a tendency to wrap her voice around my heart and ease it’s fluttered rhythm. I then feel as though I’ve wandered over icy city streets with her, in search of a hot cup of coffee, warm conversation, and a cigarette.”

Spotlight Artist!  Today’s spotlight is a three-girl and one guy punk band from Kyoto, Japan. I put this band up here today because, even though they have broken up, this is one of the earliest videos my partner Ken and I ever made. This video is ten years old! The Soap were, I think, one of the hottest “girl” punk bands and they even performed at SXSW way back when. This video catorues the old “Punk x Horror flick” concept that was popular way back when (still is?). The archival footage is from Archies.org (Thanks guys!)

Nope. The Soap have disappered down the rabbit hole and I cannot find any FB page nor Twitter page. I suspect they did have a Myspace page way back when but, of course, that’s gone too.

It’s time once again for the Top 3 Indies Artist Video Countdown of the Top 3 best Indies and Alternative Music artists for the week of August 11, 2017!

Today, my friends, I have a very special show for you. I guarantee that you are going to see some shit that makes you laugh and some stuff that just totally blows your mind!

First up is a garage punk outfit that’s been around since 1983. Their name is the Cosmic Psychos. Now, generally speaking, I hate it when oldsters stick around and play punk for decades and decades on end after they’ve become senile and forgotten to break up. Why? Well, punk music (in my most probably confused way of thinking) is for snotty young kids (insert Deadboys reference here). I find it “uncomfortable” when fat old guys try to jump around and recapture their youth. (I remember in 1996 when the Sex Pistols came to Japan – they were old and fat – I cringed)… But the Cosmic Psychos? THE COSMIC PSYCHOS???? These guys are fucking Godhead! They’ve done what few others (no one?) else has done before; old guys who capture the angst (in the pants?) of what being a twisted old fucker is like. And, trust me, I know what being a twisted old fucker is like. If there were a Punk Rock league for bands over 55, these guys would be the Crem De La Crappe’! World Champions! Chief Fry Cooks! Store Managers! Kings!

Their Facebook page says: “The Cosmic Psychos are a punk rock band based in Melbourne and rural Victoria in Australia. An underground band that has only ever achieved limited recognition, they were cited as a significant influence on the Seattle grunge scene of 90s.” Shit. I really like this band and think they are one of the most exciting acts I’ve seen in years! (Amy reminds me of a pissy bitchy chick! Simply perfect for the new queen of punk!

Amyl & the Sniffers’ music gives me the feeling I got when I first heard the Sex Pistols or X-Ray Specs in the late seventies. I can’t think of a better compliment. Check it out and see if you agree!

Spotlight Artist!  Today’s spotlight is a bunch of guys from Tokyo that are out of their fucking minds. Their name is The Spam69 (“69” in Japanese is pronounced as “Rock.” So their name is “Spam Rock.”

This stuff is hilarious too! These guys rock!

First up is a brand new band introduced to us, once again,  by Alex Kish of Wassup Rocker Radio Fame! The band’s name is Kilo Tango! Kilo Tango claims they are, “Rock pop n roll melting one face at a time!” Their influences are, The Strokes, Richard Hell, Velvet Underground, Debbie Harry, Dick Dale, Sonny and the Sunsets, Black Lips and Best Coast!

At #2 ia an artist that is a three-piece from Los Angeles named, Lucy Gucy! Lucy Gucy is a, “Surffuzz pop grunk” outfit…. (Grunk???) Thie bio says: “Formed in April 2016, LA-based band Lucy Gucy is multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Tiffany Schirz, bassist/vocalist Lila Marshall and drummer/producer Garry Ventura. Today, Gabbie brings us a rock n roll goddess from Dublin, Ireland named Cat Lundy. Gabbie sent this to me and on the first listen I thought, “This is awesome!” Ringmaster Magazine writes: “She is a singer/songwriter from Dublin; a classically trained vocalist from the Royal Academy of Music and a self-taught guitarist. Inspired by sixties blues, her songs often themed by tales of love and relationships, Cat has performed across London and as far as New York’s The Bitter End venue and Los Angeles famous House of Blues.”

Spotlight Artist!  Today’s spotlight is a band that I think is one of Japan’s premiere rock bands, they are the awesome and mighty 50 Kaitenz from Osaka!

The 50 Kaitenz are one of the most entertaining, fun and funny rock bands Japan has ever produced. They are a trio with Danny on lead guitar and vocals, Dory on vocals and bass, and Bogie on drums. “Since their miraculous meeting at the notorious Osaka Rock ‘n’ Roll Juvie, the 50 Kaitenz have taken the world of rock by storm. These three stray dogs have become the new legends of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”  If you ever come to Japan and you get a chance to see these guys, don’t miss it… This is truly a hilarious and exhilarating Rock n Roll experience. For today’s track, here they are doing a smashing cover of the Bay City Rollers hit, “Saturday Night.”

About Mike in Tokyo Rogers: Mike has been a professional music/TV/radio/anime-related program producer in Japan since the eighties. He began in the music business in 1977 as lead vocalist with the legendary Los Angeles Punk Band, “The Rotters” (Sit on My Face Stevie Nix.). As a university student, he was assistant to the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ – KROQ Los Angeles from 1980 ~ 1981.) Mike was the first and only foreigner in Japanese history to become the General Manager of a major Japanese broadcasting station (TV Tokyo owned InterFM). Has produced a few smash hit programs (some real losers, too!) and several of Tokyo’s highest rated and most famous radio programs. A recent hit program was “The TV Show” (Set Program with “Ninja Slayer”) which, between April – Oct. 2015, garnered over 10 million viewers.  He is currently producing and hosting “WTF?” the hugely popular Sunday live show on InterFM 89.7 . And his life’s dream is his just completed full-length motion picture, “Ghostroads – A Japanese Rock and Roll Ghost Story”which will be released by a major Japanese motion picture company and in theaters all across Japan in Autumn 2017.
